THE CUP RACES Which Will Govern the Great International Race Between Columbia and Shamrock this Month. It Is expected that the cup committee of the New York Yacht Club will Issue the racing rules to govern the Columbia-Sham rock contest In a few days. The first race will be sailed on Tuesday, Oct. 3, and the boat winning the best three out of five races will be declared the winner. There will be five races, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and Tuesday and Thursday of the following In the event of postponement the race will not be sailed until the next racing day, bnt an exception is made In the case of a serious accident to either yacht; then time for repair will be allowed.

An emphatic point is that after the pre paratory signal has been given a yacht has" to aDiae Dy any accident, ana snouia it prove serious a sail over will be perfectly legitimate should the owner choose to claim It. The first race will be fifteen miles to windward or leeward and return thirty miles In all. The second will be the same distance, but on a "triangle ten miles to the leg. The third will be similar to the first, and should It become necessary to sail a fourth and fifth they -will be the same as first and second respectively. A postponement of a racetwill'not change Its form.

Its direction may change though. For an effort will be made by the cup committee to have the first leg of ill courses sailed to windward. This Is believed Uo be the fairest method for both boats, antKapy subsequent changes in the wind be- of little Importance. The start each day will be made as near as possible to 11 o'clock. THIS IS REFRESHING.

Belly of the Cazeriovla Cycling Club Is of the opinion that his club has sufficient good talent to hold its own with the Oakdales. Give me the newspapers; that's all I care for." "The tallenders sit around hotels and tell bow the hit and run baseball game should be played, but they never seem to pull off the hit and device successfully, and yet they envy Ed Hanlon and the Superbas for what they call good luck at the bat," says Earl Wagner. Frank Qulnlan of Harvard at Fitchburg recently, without previous training, covered the distance of, 120 yards In 12 seconds fiat. Everything about the performance Is authentic, and it looks as if Qulnlan might have had the record of 11 4-5 seconds for the distance with little preparation. Owing to the muddy condition of the courts of the Buffalo Tennis Club all of the matches scheduled for yesterday were post poned until today, when the same playing as laid down for yesterday will be the rule today.
