The News-Item, Shamokin, Pa. June 1, 1976 Funeral Notices Area Obituaries New pressure expected for Hays' resignation appear to be unanswered and unexplained." But Rep. James Corman, said simply: "I don't want to see Wayne get hung prematurely." Meanwhile, it was learned that Rep. Mendel Davis, is being questioned in the investigation. Davis hired Miss Ray last summer on the recommendation of Hays, a Democrat from Ohio.

Miss Ray said she did no work and was on the government payroll only as Hays' mistress. It was not known if Davis was questioned about matters beyond his decision to hire Miss Ray. Hays has admitted asking Davis to hire Miss Ray. He also acknowledges later hiring her for his House Administration Committee staff but said she was hired to be a secretary and nothing else. Davis was in South Carolina on Monday, and could not be reached for comment.

Miss Ray is likely to appear this week before a federal grand jury investigating the matter. She has been granted immunity from prosecution to testily. Hays may be invited to testify voluntarily before the grand jury. Miss Ray already has told federal investigators she knows of six other women whose congressional jobs involved providing sex to congressmen or their constituents, sources have said. Prosecutors must determine two things: Whether the stories are true and whether they involve criminal activity.

Nation pays tribute to war dead By The Associated Press America has honored its war dead from the Revolution 200 years ago to Vietnam just one year ago with Memorial Day parades, speeches and flower-bedecked cemeteries. "Although we thank God that no Americans are dying in battle today, we must renew our resolve to use both our moral leadership and our material strengh to keep the peace," President Ford said after placing a red, white and blue wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Monday. Cloudy skies and rain dampened the holiday in some areas of the nation. Two busloads of Army musicians and soldiers in Seattle refused to march in the rain for fear of soiling their uniforms.

The tone of the holiday ranged from the cemetery visits and the grim traffic death count of the long weekend to Boy Scouts in Davie, who canceled their parade rather than march with the Ku Klux Klan. For many it was a time of somber memories. Survivors of the Polar Bears, the only Americans to fight on Russian soil in World War I. held a reunion in Detroit. "Conditions were very it got to 55 degrees below zero." recalled Alfred larsen, 81.

WASHINGTON (AP) Investigators are trying to draw a fine line between immorality and illegality in connection with allegations by Elizabeth Ray that other congressmen besides Wayne Hays were involved in sexual relations with House employes, a source close to the investigation says. "We have to weed out the personal and moral improprieties from those which involve violations of the law," the source said Monday, emphasizing: "We don't care who's sleeping with whom." Requiring an employe to provide sex as part of her job could violate a law aginst misuse of federal funds. "She (Miss Ray) has named other congressmen" involved in sexual activities with female House employes, the source said Monday, "but the question remains: Did the taxpayer foot the bill?" With Congress returning today, there was expected to be new-pressure on Hays to resign as chairman of the House Administration Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

House Democratic Leader Thomas P. O'Neill has said he will tell Hays that some members of Congress think his problems may have a direct impact on their efforts to win re-election. "The institutional integrity of the Congress is at stake." said Rep. Ken Hechler, "The presumption of innocence, a fundamental American principle, must not blind us to the fact that serious charges DECORATE AND I PROTECT 41.
