fpATE Ll PROM ALL POINTS OF Cbrre 6nd ne The Coumtuttori. A JJAJTT April 27. The speech of. the Hon. vG.

Turner. on the tiff is a good deal talked about among his constituents and friehdif around Albany. It is published in full In to-day's News and Advertiser. Its strokes are pointed and masterly and its array of facts and argument though within a small compass. convincing and conclusive.

Despite what zealous friends have frequently of late had to say of other members of the Georgia delegatlan in congress we have much doubt whether any district la the state Mr Stepenss left out is really as ably reprel sented as the second. The organized de- xuocrrcy of the district might go a great deal further and fare much worse before finding a fit successor to Mr. Turner. Several prominent colored citizens of Dougherty went up yesterday to attend the colored convention which meets in Macon to-day at the call and under the auspices of the Hon. Jeff Long.

Among the delegation were the Rev. Howard Bunts chaplain to the convicts in this county Ishraael Lemon our late representative Henry Singleton and others. all prominent. and influential colored men in this section. It is not known here what the object of this convention is or whether it has any defi.

nite object I all. In view however of therecent ejection of a colored bishop from the ladies' car in Florida. which the col. ored people appear to display much feeling it is not improbable that many inflammable appeals and speeches will be made by sundry of their orators. It is due to the delegation from Dougherty to say that they went up with the most pacific intentions and purposes and any influence they may exert towards shaping its counsels or its actions will be salutary.

The high and constant winds that have prevailed since the recent rains nave already al- host done away with their effects upon the crops and farmers much of whose seed is still under the hard surface crust made by the wind are easer to see another rain. The signs to-day nowever are propitious the weather having greatly moderated and thick clouds hanging overhead. THE CARROLLTON MURDERERS. Special Correspondence of The Constitution. CUROLLTON April 27.

On last Tuesday evening John Y. Stewart one of our wealth est and most prominent merchants was stricken down with paralysis and has been lying in an unconscious condition ever since. But little hope is entertained of his recovery. Your correspondent has visited the jail several times during the last eight or ten days and conversed freely with the two condemned men Moon and Hanvey. Moon still says thafr he is prepared to go and has no fears in regard to his future welfare and happiness and the main thing he seems to regard is the ignominious death of the gallows.

Hanvey does not seem to be so sanguine about his future state but has been more quietand serious since sentence of death has been passed on him. The cell which these two condemned men are kept is in a neat and cleanly condition arid they speak in the highest terms of the kindness and attention shown them by Sheriff Hewit and his cleverdeputy. Mr. John N. Skipper.

The following is a short communication from James E. Hanvey addressed to the Revs. V. V. hoop and E.

B. Barrett. ministers residing in this place uAvvsvs LETTEE. DEAR 1 1 want you to tall this everywhere jougo thatl said I wanted the people to let my late be a warning to them to keep out of bad cons- ptny and let whisky alone. If a man does not drink whisky he is not apt to get into bad company often but if he drinks whisky to an excess that is the kind of company he desires to keep.

This la rood advice if the people will take it. which I hope they will so. Signed JAMES E. HASVEY. v.

P. Kirkley one of our clever merchants lias made an assignment for the benefit of his creditors. Liablities 7500 assets some $18000. Mr. Kirkleys embarrassment grew out of his selling largely on a credit and failing to make collections.

The wheat crop stilt continues to look promising and we certainly will have an Abundant fruit crop especially peaches. The farmers are progressing finely with their work and the outlook for good crops in this section is certainly very encouraging. WAYNESBOROS ATTRACTIONS. Special Correspondence of the Constitution. The business of our beautiful little town of twelve hundred inhabitants is quiet ever dull yet the stranger would be charmed with its-cleanliness beautiful flower gardens and handsome residen- era. Situated as it is in the center of a cotton growing belt with good school facilities fine hotel one weekly paper soon will have two and such enterprising business men as B. A. Gray. W.

Our planters are at work they fully realize their financial condition and the encumbrance that envelopes them caused by the failure of last years crop. They have gone to work with renewed energy and deternsina.

tion to cast off the yoke of debt. They are very sanguine of an abundant yield and rich harvest. Although the cry of hard times is prevalent the marriage bells still peal forth. Quite a brilliant Wooding took place in the Methodist Episcopal church a few evenings ago. The contracting parties were Colonel RobertJ.

Boyd of Louisville Georgia to Miss. Nora Huff of this place. The church was decked with beautiful flowers entwined and woven into garlands festoons and wreaths while the emblematic shoe was suspended over the altar. Decoration day at this place of this season will everliVe in the memory of every happy participant and reflect honor on the noble- women of Wayuesboro. The floral decoration exceeded those of any former similar occasion.

The merchants and business men pendoo business to pay the annual tribute of respect to our fallen heroes. Only a pais- ing cqtnment and though will not sufficiently commend our orator. Mr. Julien Rodgers for his known reputation as a polished orator and attainment. Mr.

Rodgers's address was beautiful and full of pathos. SUMACHS SPARKING DAY. Special Correspondence of The Constitution SUMACH April 27. Notwithstanding the exceedingly wet winter and spring the farm. era of this section are getting along finely preparing for the coming crop.

Special Correspondence of The Constitution. NEWS AS April 28. The very large audience which assembled on yesterday to hear the memorjal address and to place their floral offerings upon the graves of' out confederate dead clearly demonstrates the fact that we as a grateful people will ever honor and commemorate the virtues of those gallantmen who died that the constitution might live. After-a very able and eloquent address from Mr. P.

W. Mortus the long procession marched to the soldiers' emetery and upon every grave where was buried an illustrious son there was placed a beautiful bouquet of the rarest flowers. The patriotic women of the town comprising the ladies memorial association have. through zealous work gotten nearly money enough to build a handsome monument to the soldiers buried here and they hope to soon be able to accomplish their undertaking. John and Jim were great friends. and frequently drank together up to the time of the formers sudden taking off and Jim does not seem to doubt in the least that the letter he has received is genuine but is at a loss to know by what route it came. He was very much affected by its receipt and wept over it before he left it in the hands of the News and Advertiser yesterday morning. A white man by the name of Ashland Cook who was arrested recently in UeKalb county for stealing some. clothing from Mr. Glore in this county and who was placed in jail at this place has made two attempts in the last few days to commit suicide. When he made his first attempt he had a companion in his iron cage by the name of Johnson. Cook told Johnson that he intended to hang himself.

Johnson replied All right go ahead. Cook then took his coat and fastened one sleeve around his neck and the other to a bar of the iron cage and swung oft He was in a fair way of choking himself to death when Johnson concluded it would be best to relieve him of his perilous position. His second attempt was when he was in his cage alone. He tore a strip from his blanket arid fastened one end to an iron bar and the other to his neck and swung off. He did considerable kicking anti this violent process snapped the blanket asunder and he fell to the floor apparetly insensible with eyesr pro truding and a swollen neck.

Cook is a young white man about twenty-five years old and it is said he is of a respectable family. He is either crazy a misty big' fool or a regular sharper. It is believed that he is playing a part The StarHe Saw. From the Dawson Ga. Journal.

THIRTY YJA1tI ISO.

Thirty years ago Campbellton WM one of the most fashionable and aristocratic little towns in Georgia- one where wealth to a great extent fashion ruled and the social scale was pitched on a high plane. Herciti- tens were strung and aristocratic but with all this wealth was not the only passport to good society and brain and energy. morals and respectabillty were considered with regard to their true value and rich and poor prince and peasant combined in a social element the standard of which was not reached by many southern towns. sooEiy. It can readily be realized then that a society composed of the wealth' the intellect and beauty of the town was not one likely.

to forego the social pleasures of life and many were the. hops tea parties and elegant dinners given and enjoyed by the youth and beauty the wit and wisdom of Campbellton. Many of our older citizens will recall with a thrill of pleasure the good old bellum days when they then in their joyousyouth met and mingled in social intercourse in the festive dance when heart went out to heart in a now of mirth of sympathy and of love Or when they gathered in the gloaming and told their tales of love vowed everlasting fidelity to their hearts' idols and painted in their fancy a bright and happy fu. lure giving themeelves up to the ecstaey of the moment and dreamingnotof the changes the march of time and the ravagts of war would work in their lives and their homes. And when their memory reverts to those happy scenes of the pat they can but exclaim 0.

Music hath charms soothe the savage breast But horrid discords sound like hell possessed. A couple of young omen near here. while on a visit a short time ago were requested to furnish music for a social dance. They at first-declined not having their instruments with them but after much persuasion how ever they yielded to the wishes of the young ladies. One of time young gentlemen armed himself with a tin whistle the other took his position with huge horn in his hand and a third party volunteered his services to blow a conch shell as a substitute for bass.

As soon as the musicians were ready several couples formed uoon the floor and the dance commenced. The man behind the conch shell blew until he was red in the face and as the music floated out upon the night air the dogs set up a mournful howl the chickens began to cackle the ducks began to quack the hogs began to squeal and the cattle elevated their tails and started for the woods. One old bull belonging to a neighbor emigrated in double quick time and has not been seen since. Such a medley of unearthly sounds as was produced that night has. newer beets heard outside the bottomless pit.
