"The Black Hammock Association will go on, but there will be a big void. Fighting to preserve Black Hammock took patience and perseverance attributes that came in handy in other areas of Logue's life.

He and his wife hunted, fished and tended to their garden together, providing most of the family's food. He also served as a hearing officer for Prosecution Alternatives for Youth and was deeply involved with his church, Bible Believers Tabernacle. In addition to buying a sanctuary for the congregation, he and his wife took two missionary trips to the Congo. "The desire of his heart was to be the very best example of a Christian man," Joanne Logue said. "He was unpretentious and honest.

What you saw was what you got." Logue also is survived by his father, Wesley of Orlando; his mother, Bette Comstock of Winter Springs; two sons, David of Orlando and James "Brian" of Oviedo; one stepson, Arthur McAuliffe of Nancy, one stepdaughter, Dr. Bobbie Jo McAuliffe of Waynesville, N.C.; one brother, Steven of Williamsport, two sisters, Susan Branan of Orlando and Melanie of Oviedo; and seven grandchildren. ByTAMMIE WERSINGER SENTINEL STAFF WRITER The Sunday afternoon memorial service was just as James Wesley "Jim" Logue would have wanted.

His friends came from as far away as Canada and Washington to his home in east Seminole County to pay tribute to a man who fought hard to preserve his rural way of life. The backdrop for the service was an old barn on Eagle Nest Ranch, where Logue and his wife, Joanne, spent their days tending to livestock and cultivating the land. The chickens were clucking, the cows were mooing and two black swans were swimming in the pond. It was an unusual setting, to honor an unusual man, friends said. "Jim was probably the most unique individual I've ever met," said Deborah Schafer, an activist and vice president of the Chuluota Community Association.

"He was a tribute to the human spirit." Logue, a real-estate broker and an advocate for preserving rural land, died Thursday of cancer. He was 60. "He just loved the peace and quiet of living in the country and being able to do what you want to do," Joanne Logue said. "We were both country people, and he loved living off the land." Logue was born in Tampa, but his family moved to Orlando when he was a baby. When explaining to Winter Springs commissioners what was special about his community, Logue talked about the benefits of being far away from neighbors.

"It's not for everyone, but we are special people. We don't need to see each other to love one another," Logue was quoted in a 1998 Orlando Sentinel article. "We don't have to agree to respect each other. We live miles apart, but we are one." Just last summer, when Seminole County was discussing the transition from rural to more developed areas, Logue spoke out not against growth, but for creation of a hard and fast line. "Just draw a cotton-picking line," he said in a June 14 Sentinel article.

"This side is urban; this side is rural." His style of leadership and way of dealing with others made him popular.
