Click on Obituaries. Federal indictments against 17 Bahamian and U.S. citizens stem from Florida raids. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MIAMI Seventeen Bahamian and U.S. citizens were charged Tuesday with being part of an international drug ring authorities say looks like something out of South Florida's 1980s cocaine wars.

The federal indictments stemmed from the Nov. 13 raid on a boat docked behind a waterfront home in wealthy Lighthouse Point, north of Fort Lauderdale. Agents seized 771 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated $35 million. "This is something we used to see in the Keys in the '80s," DEA Special Agent Joe Kilmer told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "Guys were coming into houses, bringing their boats in and everyone was used to seeing them coming and going.

Who's going to think anything of it?" The cocaine was shipped out of Colombia into Jamaica, then moved to the Bahamas and finally to Lighthouse Point, said Jacqueline Becer-ra, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office. Six of the indicted were arrested in the Lighthouse Point raid and several others have been arrested since, with five more defendants taken into custody Monday in the Bahamas awaiting extradition to the United States. Becerra said she did not have exact numbers on the nationalities of the defendants. "Over 10 of them are Bahamian.

We know there are at least four U.S. citizens involved," she said. Only one of those indicted, Shervin Emmanuel, was still being sought and thought to be in Jamaica. She said she was not aware any of those charged were from other nations. The same day authorities raided the home in Lighthouse Point, they staged a second raid on a house in northwest Broward County town of Coral Springs, seizing 44 more pounds of cocaine and arresting the woman who was renting the house.

The government is seeking forfeiture of approximately $100,000 in cash, a 42-foot sailboat, a 4412-foot sport fishing boat and the $500,000 waterfront property on the Intracoastal Waterway in Lighthouse Point. The indictments in the case dubbed "Operation Bluewater" were announced by officials of Miami's U.S. Attorney's Office, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Paul Farquhar-son, commissioner of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
