cbetiuled OHIO BECOMING RACE HORSE CENTER Ohio seems destined to become a center for the running sea. Two running horse plants have operated successfully near and this spring and both ha" already made plans for extensive fall meetings. It is rumored that the syndicate behind the Cleveland tracks is planning the purchase of several other Ohio tracks with a view to establishing a ehamn of racing centers in and about the Buckeye state. The latest addition to the string was the purchase of the plant at Youngstown. Ohio.

Although this Is but a half mile track it is regarded a one of the best in the world. It was built several years ago by the late Senator David Tod a harness horse enthusiast. Since his death no meetings have been conducted on the course. The plant comprises shout fifty acres and is said to have changed hands at a figure believed to be 50000. CANADA WILL HAVE MANY RACE MEETS Canada will hue more running" race meetings this year than ever before in her history Ko less than five new plants will be to operation and others are planned that will practically insure racing from early spring until late in the fall.

Wttb the various provinces protecting the game with legislation it is little won der new plants are being erected. Of the 1673 students at Georgia Tomb. un took part in some form of athletics during the past year according to Coach W. A Alexander- who has just completed a study of athletic cond tions at the school. His figures showed that more than 70 per cent of the students were engaged in sports of one kind or another and that the number participating in inter- si bola- tic contests was less than half of the number who took part in the intramural events.

There has been a certain amount of criticism of college sports in the past few years on the rounds of too great ppecilization Mr. Alexander said. The charge has been made that all the attention has been centered upon the varsity football games. in which only a few men can participate. while.

the primary object of athletics the de. veopment of tie physical condition in all the students Has been forgot- ten I believe the explanation of this criticism is chiefly in the fact that the public is most interested in football The people outside of the school starcelv know that the intramural con- te ts are being held and these con- te ts are not designed for popular entertainment. Their object ma to de velop the be qualities of sports- rmn'-hin and the best physical condi- on among the students to make bet. ter men of them. It is.

therefore. very- gratifying to see that so many of the Tech students voluntarily took part in sports It is impossible to have compul orv physical training at Tech because we have no gymnasium. and the fact that more than. The total number of Tech students who were engaged in all recognized spans iluiring the past year football basketball track baseball swimming and tenni' was 1701. This includes however. 510 men who were in. more tl- in one form of sport. The total enrollment at Tech of regular stu' uteflts this year was 1673 exclusive of the ght school students and other sr HiaIs and this makes the percentage of stu lents participating in athletics 71 per cent.

Track sports interested the greatest nt mber of students. the total in this neh of athletics being increased by the entry of more than 500 students in the annual cross-country run of -'I miles. A total of 1181 sit-dents were engaged in these excl is velv intramural sports. The varsity at Tech are only a small part of the number interested vd taking part in athletics" Coach Alexander said.

Varsity sports are a rt of our athletic program but only a I art. Our most important work an ong the students is encouraging intramural activities. I believe the re ults of the past year refute sny cr tici of specialization as far as Georgia Tech is concerned" In addition to the men taking part in tile various sports physical train- lag me emphasized in the work of the O.
