Photo by Niso Imamura, Hilo Camera Craft Co. i Can the Broncos Beat Washington? California Bears Say It CANT Be Done This undoubtedly comes under the heading of "bad news" to Frank Valenti and other Santa Clara die-hards, but members of the California basketball team feel the Broncos have only the slimmest kind of a chance to beat the Washington Huskies should they meet in the NCAA regional finals this weekend at Corvallis, Ore. Almost to a man, the Bears, who were bopped in two straight, 60 to 47 and 80 to 51, by the Huskies in the Pacific Coast Conference playoffs last weekend, agree that such a feat is next to impossible. "The Broncos are a sound team, but they don't have anyone to stop Bob Houbregs and the Washington guards, Joe Cipriano and Charlie Koon, are simply too fast for anything at Santa Clara," one Bear eager told Dick Friendlich of the San Francisco Chronicle. "If Bob Matheney couldn't hold Cipriand, I don't see anyone on Santa Clara doing it." The Bear players believe that Doug McClary, a fine defensive man, would draw Ken Sears, Santa Clara scoring ace, should they meet and they feel Doug will do a good job of stopping the lanky bond.

Of course, the Huskies and Broncos may never meet. Washington must get by Seattle, and Santa Clara by Wyoming in semifinal matches tonight. HUSKIES LEAD 20 TO 8 AFTER FIRST QUARTER Friendlich, who went to Seattle for the playoffs, writes that Washington broke California's back in the first 10 minutes of the first game. Houbregs sank the first three long hook shots he took and Cipriano his his first two long one-handers, stole two more for layups and Washington went out in front, 20-8. Many of the Bay Area writers are not too happy about the fact that Nibs Price, California's veteran cage coach, will have to retire after next season.

Retirement is mandatory under ASUC provisions, which have been adopted recently. "Why should Nibs, who has been at California more than SO years, be ruled out by a set of provisions that have been adopted only cf late," protests Bill Leiser in his Chronicle column. "The retirement plan is excellent, for those who need it and benefit by it, but Nibs doesn't need it and the plan has not been in effect long enough to prove any benefit for him. Little Nibs is strong, healthy and at his peak as a coach. If forced to retire, he would have to take a job elsewhere, and California would merely be sending one of America's greatest basketball coaches to another university which would be highly appreciative." That university, of course, will be the University of Hawaii, which has virtually closed the deal to have Price take over the Rainbow cagers for the 1954-55 season.

TVEIGn-IN SUNDAY Weigh-in for the tourney is scheduled this Sunday morning at the TBC office from 9 to 10:30 a.m. This initial weigh-in is a must for all participants, including those from the Neighbor Islands. Up to press time, the AAU Boxing Committee had no definite word as to how many of the Islands would be represented. The local AAU Boxing Committee is entirely dependent on the net take from the Territorials to finance the Hawaii team's trip to the annual Boston Nationals April 13-15.

CHAMPS TO BE PICKED Only champions will be picked for the Boston bound Hawaii squad. How many titleholders will make the jaunt will depend on the amount available. Team priority starts from the lowest weight division 112 pounds and goes on up from there. The Isle team leaves April 7. As earlier reported a number of service standouts will be missing from the interisle championships.

Marlin Mettler (178) and Jeff Lee 156). An outstanding AAU contender is expected to be the Marines' Ken Barrineaux, former New Orleans Golden Gloves titleholder. He may compete either in the 147 or 156 pound division. OTHER ENTRIES Other likely entries are Rufino Ridella, Paul Nakahodo ad Alfred Torres. All three were absent from the OABA bracket fights.

Army will have good representation with such fighters entered as James Mapa, Primo Alfische, Arcadio Cabato, Coss Servantes, Faustino Caparida and Salu Sua.
