jrinners ot tift' ersnts ve mne Harry Glenn. Aflantai Irst timMtffcTadlan Xaclr thi Points to Frank Kramer As Remarkable Example Of Endurance in Sports Veteran Bicycle Champion Now Over Forty Years of Age Can Still Win Big Events With Much Ease. BY ROBERT EDOREN. Do you begin to feel creaky in the joints and to suspect that the old pep isn't quite up to the mark Do you feel as if you couldn't make a standing broad jump from the edge of the sidewalk within inches of what you could Jump a year or two ago Do you avoid exerting your strength for tear of a strain or dodge any kind of an unusual effort because it might pull your cork If you do take my word for it that that tenths of your supposed retrogression is mental. Its a state of mind nothing more.

A little training and confidence and you're right back in shape again. Twenty-five years ago I walked down the street in East Orange N. with a young amateur bike rider. who had just won two or three races and had shown a remarkable turn of speed for a novice. His name was Frank Kramer.

"I'm going to stick to racing said Frank. and I'm going to take care of myself and last as long I I can. I think Ill be riding faster twenty years from now than I can today. I have it an figured out. Clean living plenty of sleep no dissipation lots of work.

The youngsters notion of lasting twenty years or more in his game struck me I rather unusual. Few champions think so far ahead. A few weeks ago April 16 to be exact Frank Kramer started his twenty-third year of racing as a champion professional bicycle racer. In all he has raced for twenty-six years four at an amateur champion and two as a professional. He has lost races occasionally of course.

but has always come back with another winning streak. His early speed stays with him and in fact he rides faster today than he did twenty-five years ago which makes his prediction more than good. GOLF AND TEN HOURS' SLEEP. Opponents say that much of Kramer's success on the trade is due to a highly developed jump he rives his machine at tht finish mark. Often a rival will be riding neck.

to neck with the speed king right down to the finish line and lose by inches when Frank pulls out that final effort and leaps ahead. Kramer is a hard man to beat. He has won the professional championship of America eighteen times and the. amateur championship twice. He won the worlds championship in 1919 the only time he ever competed for it.

Frank Kramer is now 41 years of age and his tpeed is still there. He was born in Evansville. md. but the Hoosier state missed a lot of fame be. cause Frank emigrated to East Orange when a little fellow and has lived there ever since.

If you asked Kramer the reason for his success he would tell you that he keeps his speed because he sleeps ten hours every night and makes it a. positive rule to be. in bed by o'clock and to arise at I He lives largely on a fruit and vegetable diet and eats sparingly. His only drink is water. tie.

never smokes and the fact that many of his friends have well-stocked cellars is no temptation to him. During the past five years Frank hat played a great deal of golf which he says gives hint Just the right amount of physical and mental ezer' rise to keep him fit. Even on the days of his hardest races he goes out in the morning for a round. on one of the Newark courses. Asked how can find entertainment while sticking to his to.

schedule Frank laughed and said that when he wants extra amusement he roes up to his attic and reads a fewof the mash notes" that fill two trunks. Kramer has long beeu an idol of the bike fans and has received thousands of letters from the ladies. Southern Race According to Dope BY CLIFF WHEATLEY Kid Peck Is a Coming rJgfle1fr incidentally surely the championship rare In the Southern league is settling- to the pace most doputen predicted wouldbe the case after a mouth of campaigning. Mobile is ouf in front and as long as the hitting of this club continues the Bears will he big contenders for the flag. Little hock baa pushed forward Into second place and it seems that nothing win stop Jmerle1c1 in his effort to stay near the top.

His position is strong the team is getting along nicely even without the assistance' of Elmer LutIst the Travelers' center fielder and one of the best in the league. The Pelicans who had much trouble tthe start in' getting the various de- tartnYBltVt rtfDr. at the same time aye apparently on the road to winning and will be in striking distance for the rut of the campaign. Birmingham too. is-coming back In flue fashion butMemphis is slipping itliVthe collapse of ed Lucas' streak the Nashville Vole whatever chance they ever iad oeln a r1irit elub are learning fcaseball rapidlr and- might mote into sixth place shortly Judrmeht is suspended oav the Crackers Snntilg the Btt I never answered' any of them says Frank.

Perhaps that's why he still I that jump SEVEN YEARS A CHAMPION. Bicycle racing is a strenuous form of competition. To find anything equalling Frank Kramer's record of twenty-three years a champion. lta necessary to go to some other sport' Tom Carroll the great professional weight thrower and all around. athlete 3 is another remarkable figure arnong' I long-lived champions the greatSt th lete I have ever known.

Tom first began breaking worlds weight-throwing records when he wee MJyearj age. He was then 6 feet 6 inches i and weighed about 100 pounds Today at 65 he is 265 pounds hasn't a built like Jack Dempsey throw a pound weight as. ever although he complains thatlhe i lacks the swift drive and the snappy i writ action he used to have when he could put the pound shot 50 feet He still holds about twenty worlds professional weight-throwing record I "I've slipped back a little witllitie hammer Tom told me last timet met him he was 63 then and lf can only let it out about a feetV Then he picked up a pound weight i. and hurled it 38 feet to show ae thoi difference. "I'm as strong ever he said I but I'm losing a little speed seven years a chlmpiOD There's food for thought In that.

roll has been a living athlete aJl the way. His one dissIpationJfcajPj been a love for an occasional pipe Or I cigar and every two or three ytarsi I he took a cure for that' and cat I out smoking for a while. Carroll. like Kramer dame that sleep is the one absolutely necessary1 thing for a man who wants to strong and healthy sleep' and plguty' of good wen water to drink every day. He eats anything.

He train steadily but never to the point of hanstion. ii Among fighters Johnny l1bane looks like one of the lasting champs. I Johnny won the title nearly en jears a to. and he hasn't shown any signs of being willing to give it up. yet Every now and then some youngster knocks out a lot of' rivals and gets up to Kilbane only to be knocked out In turn.

i Jack Dempsey looks like another term champion. He says thatha expects some young fellow to come along some time aid knock him' for But it wont he because I take tare of myself he says.
