AND THEN HE GAVE UP GOLF Big Task Faces' Golden Tornado In Beating Tiger Says Statn Tech's Left End Believes. That Auburn' Always Plays Best Game Against Jackets. BY JOHN STATON Tech's Left End. With the Georgetown victory stowed away on the shelf we have now got to begin thinking about Auburn. For a brief day or two we can rejoice over the success of our team but then we must put such pleasant thoughts out of our minds and concentrate on the game to come.

The Georgetown game us now is history and as history we have laid it aside. now come face to face with a bigger opportunity and a more arduous task. The task that confronts us is twofold. First we have got to work like the dickens to' keep on edge. Towards the last of the season things have It tendency to become dulL The slg.

ned drill is not quite so snappy and tile' scrimmages not. quite so pert. For that reason we cannot afford to let up the fraction of a hair. It is the' last lap so to speak when we must. throw the last nerve into the game and.

keep on going. To let down at this time would spell sure defeat. Therefore we are not going to do it. We are going to stick to the gun for two weeks longer and if humanly possible we are going to- win the southern championship. Mingled Feelings.

Thoughts of the Auburn Tigers always bring a mingled feeling. For some things you are glad and for otis- lrs you are sorry. The Auburn game signifies the end of the season. the last time that some of the fellows will ever play a game for Tech the last time that the. Golden Tornado of 1021 ill ever play together a a a team.

You capriot. help feeling a trifle' sad over such an occasion. Maybe you are fighting side by side with your' buddy. for the last time for the Tech team is a team of buddies. You realize that some of them have performed their duty and nobly too.

But time decrees that they shall pass on to make room. for others. So it is with football. But there is a joy too the joy of knowing that even it it is your last game you wilt play it well. play it as never before and then fade with the satisfaction of knowing that you have given your all.

Expect Hard Game. Some of you people may think that were in for an easy time. If you do you don't know Auburn. They have the knack of playing' better against us than all the rest of their opponents put together. They seem to be our jinx.

No' matter how poor they are rated they always play a thousand per cent above' form and surprise everybody when they play us. Probably- you remember that night- mare of 1019. Tech was doped to heat the Plainsmen 40 points. Not based on comparative scores but. on the relative strength of the two teams.

Ve had a team that was 40 points better than Auburn. Maybe it was the knowledge of this fact maybe everybody had an off day at once or maybe what not. When the game was over a sign on the Scoreboard read Auburn 14 Tech 7. They are our Jonah. There is absolutely us way of comparing the strength of the two teams.

No Great Record. Looking over Auburn's record for the season one can see nothing startling. The most prominent features are the defeats at the hands of Georgia and Centre. The Centre. score should have been larger than it really was.

Auburn' had a fumbling manic that prevented all possibility of a score. They beat Clemson 58 to O. That is most decidedly in their favor. All that we could" do with Clemsox was to' whip them down with a 7 score From that-it would seem that Auburn had a decided edge but they have played a more or less erratic game this year. And that's the whole proposition in II.

The realize that they must do something to redeem themselves in the eyes of the public. They now occupy the same position that we did before the Georgetown game. They will fight. as never before to give their team a good rating. That's why they are going to be so hard to beat.

They realize that a win over Tech would wipe out all the sting of the previous defeats arid they are out to turn the little trick. FORT MPHERSON TEAM DEFEATED BY FEDS In a hard fought game the team tfrom the Federal prison won over ort McPherson. by a score of 343-45 on the' field at Fort McPherson Sunday afternoon. The team from the Federal prison outweighed the opposing eleven sum twenty to a man which part- lr accounts for their overwhelming rictory. In the first quarter the visiting team.

November 13. Special. While the Generals tad comparatively little trouble in disposing of Uoanoke College in the final home game of the season here Satur day Coach Bill Raftery will Monday tart puttingvlhe final polishes to the Washington and Lee squad during this week in preparation for- their game with Centre College at Louisville on Saturday which. will perhaps prove to be the most important conflict on the Blue and Whites card this season. The Generals to a man realize that their showing jn the Centre game must be of the highest possible brand should they desire to romp home with a vie-1 tory over Bo McMillm and his Colonels and as a result every man on the squad is putting evtrything possi ble into the daily practice sessions Irom now until the team leaves tor Louisville on Thursday.

It is practically certain that Raftery will again this week as last close the gates to all spectators and have the practices strictly secret in nature. This policy' was adopted following the West Virginia game at ton a week ago and little of just what the' team is doing gets on the outside although the practice sessions last week were lengthened considerably and were supplemented by blackboard drills each sight. In Good Shape. The entire team came through the Roanoke encounter in good shape with only the usual number of minor. bruises and injuries and will in the best possible condition for the Centre encounter.

To date sbury. tackle Is the only man to receive an injury of a serious nature during the season Ms leg having been broken in practice some time' ago. The battleagainst Centre is attracting more interest among the alumni throughout this section and supporters of the team here than any other contest of the season and from present indications one of the largest crowds ever witnessing a football game in Louisville will be present Saturday when theX Generals take the field against the Colonels. The advance sale of tickets' has been exceptionally heavy and it is evident that the stands will be filled to overflowing when Kentucky fans turn out to accord Bo MeMillin Red Roberts and other Centre stars a final farewell upon the occasion of their last big game on their native soil. Although no definite announcement has been.

made here it is probable that a number of students win accompany the team to. Louisville in. a special car from. Lexington. COLLEGE PARK WILL BATTLE IN THE WEST College- Park Md.

November 13. A western trip in which Chicago Illinois Northwestern Ohio and possibly one or two. other teams will be met is being- strongly considered for the 1022 University of' Maryland baseball team it was learned- today. Negotiations have Practically been completed for games with North Carolina Holy Cross Dartmouth and Syracuse. These games are expected to be played in Baltimore.

LOOK FOR OPPONENT FOR BIG WRESTLER Knoxville Tenn. November 13.

A search is now under way in Knoxville for about ten big men averaging around 225 pounds who would like to stay with Jess Weteguard for a few minutes each day Weteguard arrives tomorrow and will train each day before his matrh next Thursday night with-Ivan Mick ailoff. The bout will be given November 17 at Bijou under Police Gazette rules. Two preliminaries will precede the main wrestling match. Prelimi naries will start at 8 o'clock and the main match about 9 o'clock.

Weteguard will weigh about 215 pounds. His enormous strength con- pled with his knowledge of the game makes him a formidable opponent. Mickailoff stands six. feet five inches and weighs about 220 Pounds. Iii is the fastest big man on the mat today.

Fancy Coogan beating Johnny Dundee three times and then to find that he is not going to get first crack at the Junior Lightweight Title belt that is to be given by Tex Rick rd but instead of Cougan the- Garden management are to put on George Chancy and Johnny Dundee even though Dundee has defeated Chaney five times within the past year.

PRIVATE 'GOBIG SUCCESS A private showing local pugilistic talent of some new recruits was given Saturday night at the Pt Kappa Chi Athletic club. Tire affair as attended by-about 300 specially invited guests. The main bout of fifteen rounds between Johnnie Burns and Jimmie Britt both formerly of Baltimore Mdn was a very bloody affair. Young Britt however proved himself the better infighter and wore hts opponent down in the clinches. Britt received the referees decision.

In the. preliminaries Young Shil- Georgia Tech instructor in electrical engineering. looked very promising. He showed both speed and knowledge of boxing. In his four.

round bout with Johnnie Nelson the referee declared a draw. The windup of eight rounds between Lon Gison" and. Tommy Burns resulted in a draw. These boys are heavyweights and wasted considerable energy. Each received bad eye in' the second' round.

ELI SUCCESS BIG FEATURE New York November" 13. The smashing plunging Lirpable hand of football warriors that carried the blue standard ofYale to victory over the Princeton eleven Saturday at New Haven is ranked use of that triumph as too strong a foe for the eleven of Harvard which the Bulldog meets next Saturday in the last of the seasons bog three. clashes. Princeton has won from Harvard and lost to Yale. Captain Malcolm Aldrich's kicking toe was the real factor in Yale's mtory over Princeton for the two field goals that Aldrich lifted between the posts carried the Bulldog to its 13 to I score.

Charlie OHearn the Eli quarterback made the Yale touchdown in" the opening period. Pennsylvania States eleven unde fented during the season drove to a 7 victory at Philadelphia over the Navy which had up to that' time a series of unbroken victories. There were times during the ga me when it appeared as though the midshipmen would be unable to- stem the Pennsylvania State attack but they came back strong in the. second- half and while holding their adversaries scoreless. vere in striking distance of their goal on numerous occasions.

Stubborn Foe. Harvard represented mostly by second-string men found a stubborn foe in Brown but fought determinedly in the last quarter and scored a touchdown that brought victory 9 to 7. Pfaffman booted a goal in the third period giving the Crimson a lead which Brown snuffed with a touchdown in the early part of the final period. Pennsylvania launched a counter offensive in the last minutes of its game at the. Polo growsdsa ith Dartmouth and managed to tie 1414.

The Army found its easiest opponent of the sea son in Villa Nova. and swept to victory of 7 touchdowns 49 to O. Ohio University in its second invasion of the east this season defeated Columbia 23 to 21. A touchdown in the third quarter and a safety fc the last gave the Ohioans victory after tile heavier Columbia eleven had' spent itself in a three touchdown rally in the second period. Swarthmore offensive was puzzling to Johns Hopkins and the Baltimore eleven lost.

GENERALS Lexington Va November 13. Special. Washington and Lee his never yet failed to come back with a victory after a severe defeat. and that is what we expect to' do whenwe play' Centre. said Coach Bill Raftery this afternoon in a talk to the' squad before putting the team through practice.

X. New Highway Being Planned Across State Wrightaville Ga. November 13. Special. A great deal of enthusiasm is being- manifested here in the proposed plan' of opening a highway from Swainsboro through Emanuel.

Johnson Washington Wilkinson Twiggs and Bibb counties into. Macon. The Atlanta. Macon and Savannah Line Highway association will be organized at an early date with goodroads advocates in' Savannah Statesboro walnsboro Wrightsville Sandersville Irwinton Macon and Atlanta squarely behind' the prop osition. By opening up title stretch of road from Swainsboro to Macon the road time from.

Atlanta to Savannah will greatly- reduced as likewise will be the time from Swainsboro and intermediate points will be greatly re ducsd to Macon. The distance from Weights-rule to Macon via Dublin or Sandersville is approximately ninety miles. Under the Line highway plan this die. tance wilt be reduced about thirty' miles. This stew highway will wise reduce the distance from Sandersyille to Macon.

It is proposed for- the Line highway to tross. the Oceans river at or near' Bans ferry where the river banks are high and a bridge of from one hundred to one hundred and fifty yards will span the stream and no swamp will be encountered. Many of the citizens of this section feel that they have been done an injustice un der the plan proposed by the survey outlined by' the Georeia highway map. and they re going determinedly alter the new highway from Swainsboro tp Macon. Art Editor Named.

All three men are well known in university circles and- are exceptional artists. Both Hosrh and Sheffield contributed to the 191 Pandora. HE. THE cup Gee Ti ld. Some Fine Battles Still on Boards BY CLIFF WHEATLEY Good Rivalry in Saturdays Games The boys that run to- the games in which- the well-known and justly fabled rivalry exists are going to be treated to some line entertainment in Saturdays battles.

Atlanta has one Georgia and Alabama at Ponce de Leon park and the scene of Charles Franks late baseball orgy is being decorated for the reception of the old warriors. Louisville gets the Centre Colonels pitted against liafterys Washington and Lee Generals. The latter hold the whip-handle in the army but this isn't war. Anyway Raftery expects to make a good showing. He says so himself.

North Carolina State meets Wake Forest and the least worse is bound to win. Tere is much rivalry between these elevens and Wake Forest is es pecially keyed for the conflict. Its her firs time in some years to snake herself heard" above States yells of triumphs and Wake. Forest has little intention of letting the opportunity slip by. The Florida Gator gets a crack at the mysterious Mr.

Gpat Hale find his Mississippi college machine Saturday and this column i looking for the Floridians to get hammered for a loop. If there evec was a football player Mr. Hale seems to be one and has-beaten better teams than Florida single-handed. Ten other play- era are on Hales team but they are there merely to conform with gridiron rules. They don't appear to be needed in securing Mississippi Colleges victories.

The Mercer Baptists meet the University of Chattanooga at Macon and the Bibb county fans should get a game fully as good as that Saturday when Eleocks Petrels defeated the Macon' collegians. Old Man Dope seems to favor the Baptists and for once we are going to delve with that nit bless person long. enough to predict aMercer victory. Tulane and the Louisiana State University will play at Tulane send from all indications it is going to be a splendid struggle. The.

best piece of playing done by L. S. U. during this campaign was its victory over the University of Arkansas while the Green Wave staged a marvelous comeback after losing to Mississippi cot- ee early in the. season.

Fridays schedule includes games between Arkansas and Baylor. Gem- son and Erskine and Furman and Wofford. HARVARD AND YALE IN THE SPOTLIGHT. With due respect to our south- ten classics for Saturday there is no such interest in any of them as exists in. the Yale-Harvard controversy that comes up for its annual settlement Saturday' at- the Harvard stadium.

The odds this year are on. the. sons of Eli. Their victory over the Princeton Tiger Saturday was most aus- pieous especially in face of the fact that- old Nassau had scored a triumph over John' Harvard's boys the week before. But this means very little when Harvard and Yale come together.

Most of the players forget all the foot. ball they've been. taught and devote the four quarters to' something that wasn't called football when the Lee Street Fighting club met the. Jackson Avenue Roughs some years ago in a beautiful little south Georgia city. Other fine games in the east will see Boston college against the Georgetown Hilltoppers who.

ate expected to recover gradually from their licking at the hands of the Golden Tornado Saturday. The winner of this battle will be tied with Notre Dame for the Irish football championship of the world. Brown and Colgate meet in their annual game at Providence. Syracuse and Dartmouth also settle their argument at that time the Big Green machine to leave for Atlanta just after the game to meet the University of Georgia at Grant field on November 26. There seems to be little-hope- of un.

tangling the knot that will exist in the western conference this season. Ohio State. and Iowa are the leading contenders although Wisconsin supporters say their team is within whisper. ing distance pl making a triple knot of the affair. In the conference Saturday Indiana and Purdue will play.

Ion a State is in itiuninent danger of being brought off the field in sections as this team is. slated to meet the great Nebraska machine. The University of Michigan and Minnesota are two other fine teams that will meet. Ohio State plays Illinois and should win the struggle Wisconsin and Chicago will pray inthe game that will hold most of the interest of conference followers. By winning this game.

while Ohio State and Iowa are losing their contests Wisconsin would earn a triple tie. but Iowa meets Northwestern which has yet to win a conference game. SOME GREAT UPSETS IX DIXIE SITUATION. Unexpected power of Georgia Tech's defense the failure of football fortune to break for the University of Georgia and the tremendous manner in which Centre outclassed Auburn were the sinking developments of the football week in the south. Other matters of interest were the rout of Sewanee by the University of Tennessee and Alabama's defeat at' the hands of Florida.

Tech now has nothing left on its schedule except Auburn. and fron the utter collapse of Auburn's attack which with Shirling and Shirty was rated good and the strengthening of the- Golden Tornado defense gives Techevery reason to anticipate a sweeping victory. on- Thanksgiving day. Georgia remains undefeated save' by Harvard. but it will take Georgia many days to recover from that tie game with Vanderbilt likewise undefeated and likely to stay so It seems ironical that' Georgia should have been tied in the one battle in' which its offense was most' highly developed.

Nothing could have been asked of the Georgia de tense. As- usual it was perfection but when Georgia attacked it showed splendid power and resourcefulness that its staunchest supporters had never credited it with haying. Severe. penalties only held. the score to one' touchdown while the mental lapse of the- entire team permitted Vanderbilt to score.

That mental lapse will not show in the records though. The game remains Georgia 7 Vanderbilt 7 with the' Commodore naturally looking twice as big as Georgia's. The Red and Black. tie game com plieatee the southern situation 'extremely particularly its view of Centre's overwhelming victory over Auburn. Centre is a member of- the South- ern Intercollegiate Athletic associa lion.

It plainly displayed too in that Auburn game that it is a force that must have the most serious consideration. The accounts show that the Plainsmen were little more than help. less before the Kentuckians' drive while Charley Moran's charges' were always able to stop anything that Auburn could" start. REV. B.

Four teams lost their contest of the season to another southern eleven. Sewanee was scored upon for the' first- time this year and Centre by its brilliant victory over Auburn went into' second place among the wraths best scoring machines whose leader is Georgia Tech.

Tennessee's 21 to 0 defeat of also placed Centre with its Vecord of only one touchdown by an" opponent all season in the leadership in defensive play. Vanderbilt comes second with 14 points scored against it to six for Centres opponents. The team left without a defeat against them by another' Dixie eleven now number but half a dozen. Centre Georgia Georgia Tech Louisiana State Vanderbilt and Washington and Lee. Three have lost at least one game to an opponent from another section but Centre Louisiana State and Vanderbilt have won all their contests.

The Vanderbilt Commodores who vie with the Florida Gators in show.

Saturday while the Ohioans' were bowling over Purdue 28 to 0 and the Ilawkeyes buried Indiana under's a 41 to 0 score. Both Ohio State and Iowa have comparatively easy opposition for the final games of the season Saturday and observers believe they will come through with clean slates. Ohio meets Illinois which has been defeated in all four of its big ten" games while Iowa tackles Northwestern another tailender in the.

race with four defeats in as many games. Wiscon sin however must face' Chicago one of the strongest contenders in the Bare Possibility. In order to accomplish this Wisconsin must triumph over Chicago while Ohio and Iowa must suffer defeats in the final games.

Emory Intercollegiate Atheletic Advocates Will Lose Out Again BURBAGE HAS GOOD RECORD BY ROY E. WHITE. There is one man in the prep football league of Atlanta that will stand in the minds of the Tech High' play.

The Birmingham team immediately accepted. Neither had been Beaten during the season. The game was played November 15 and Central High was the victor by a to score. That was the mere beginning for- last year Burbage accepted an offer to coach G. M.

team of 192 played the. Tech High eleven to a tie. Last Friday he again led a' team from G. Mi A. thaVtook the measure' of a Purple and Gold eleven repre' seating Tech High by a point margin which in all probability will prove enough for a prep championship.

Inquiries here aieong members of the North Georgia conference from Atlanta and the Atlanta district as to the probable outcome of the movement for intercollegiate athletics at Emory elicited the reply that it will probably be a number of years before the students of that institution are ranted athletic relations with other colleges. if ever. It is stated by good authority that out of the thirty members who compose the. board of. trustees eighteen of them' are opposed to intercollegiate athletics.

Bishop Warren A. Candler. as is well known is emphatically opposed to athletic contests with other colleges nd Asa G. Candler is of the same opinion. Openly Oppose Some of the trustees who a short while bark based their opposition" to intercollegiate athletics on the grounds of their regard ret Bishop Candler and etsa G.

Candler are now openly against the suggested enlargement of the athletic program. on the grounds that the university has no need of an increased student body being already crowded to capacity. Also it is said that. intercollegiate athletics as they are now carried on are not real amateur athletic contests as many ringers are employed solely for that purpose. Further.

it was stated by several of the members of the board their opposition lay in the retarding- effect upon the work of the schools where allowed and the expenditure of large sums of money incurred that might be more profitably used. The final sentiment of opposition. It was said lies in the prevalence of gambling on intercollegiate athletics which seems to be on the increase in Georgia. KKA a WaHHK ahKHHH tteSoeen oFSpoit by New York's Athletic ommissien which has charge of boxing and' wrestling has made another- strange move. When Governor' Miller was persuaded that a salaried.

commission could run the sport with the aid of salaried ones to do the work. there were sniffs of derision and grunts of suspicion among the' sporting fraternity. When the bill was drawn which gave the salaried boxing comimsrion control over wres tling there was a strorm belief that some one had slipped something over on the unsuspicious governor. Jack CurllY had control of wrestling in New York ajid Pretty fair control over the game elsewhere. lie really is the man who made wrestling in the UnitedStates lie has many detractors many vicious critics and few defenders.

Wt Mr. CurIe may or may not be or what he has done in the past in not in point. The point is that others desked control of the. wrestling game. Curley found himself barred out of places he formerly Jiad used to stage matches.

Then the salaried rout' mission issued a statement saying that hereafter the use of the headlock and various other punishing holds in wrestling would he forbidden in New. York Mate. Is It Entirely Fair To prevent the use of the holds- enumerated by the commission meant the end of. wrestling in New York and naturally the end of the Curler regime. Curley who was trying to arrange a lease on a building in which he could hold matches gave up tile idea.

Another promoter went ahead and arranged a match. From the stage at that match a statement' was read with the word that it came from one of the- salaried commissioners stating that the commission had no intention of forbidding the use of the holds which had been named as be' ing barred. The announcement seems to bear with it the charge that the commission never made any rule barring the Deadlock and other holds and that it was sent to the newspapers' from other quarters. Meantime however Curley is out of wrestling at least temporarily and powers other than' he are promoting wrestling. Is it quite right The West Comes Into Its Own.

The west seems to be coming Into its own in football this' seasons. At least the west is enjoying a. wonderful boom and tremendous success in the intersectional contests. Thetriuinphs of Centre of Chicago of Nebraska and Notre Dame over strong eastern teams gives tremendous encouragement But the west is not entitled to. celebrate or to claim that western football is better than st- era or that the west is' coming ahead or even that the east is degenerating.

The fact is that football is a science is spreading rapidly and al most school which can assemble a teases of average weight send usur than average speed Las. a chance un der the new rules. The triumphs' of Centre and Chi cago over' Harvard and Princeton were great forfootball in the center west. But they are not proof that the west is superior to. the east in the A a westerner and follower of western football for twenty years or more.

I always have argued that. there have been teams la that sectionthat could beat the best in the east. Thn Michigan team-of Ilestons time the Chicago team of Bezdek and Eckersall the second Wisconsin team when Pat ODea was at his bet the Ohio. team with Harley and several others could have held' i the best of the east As to the Turns. But the east always turns out more finished football machines simply for two reasons First that they always have drawn the- best of the western football material save in rare in stances and second because they are better coached.

There is a third reason which4 Is that the eastern teams have from two weeks to three weeks advantage of the west that is the be- cause of the. rule forbidding conference teams to start training before a given' date. Besides that. the east for generations has Lad the benefit of accumulated experience and of. individual coaching by former stars The west has been advancing steadily in this year.

As for comparing the men physically there is small difference save that they come big in some sections. The fact that the snore open style at game gave impetus to tile sport in the west and that- the success of. the western teams tends to keep western boys at the schools nearer home instead of flocking as they formerly did to Harvard Princeton or Yale makes the future' brighter. It is not a sectional matter at ill hut proof' that the game is becoming more and more universal. The mid- west has no more cause to crow over' its success against the east than has the south or the Pacific coast.

To be perfectly frank the chief cause of the success of Centre against Harvard and of Chicago against Princeton was that the coaches Pointed their- teams for these contests while their oppoinents were buy planning for. their big tames and could not make special preparation for those which were considered less important I have an idea that if either Harvard or Princeton had prepared specially for those games the west and south would have bad less cause to cheer. It is becoming more and more evi dent however that no leant no matter how good can save up strength for special games and not risk defeat There are twenty teams In the United States at least' twenty that can beat the champion of 1921 if that team tried to use second string men. It is obvious that the big teams must plan their schedules carefully if they are to go through a. season unbeaten.

And they must study the dope carefully. Princeton for in stance was accused last winter of making a schedule to hold its championship. It was charged twith pick' tog- opponents to prepare gradually for the big games. Picking Swarthmore Navy and Chicago turned out soft with a reverse English. Swarthznore crippled two of the Tiger stars and Navy and Chiago swarmed all over the They gave them however just the spar they needed to make them a football team.

Sometimes a beating is the only thing that will bring a team 16 the scratch and make it fight and Princeton can fight when it is routed. Copyright-1921 Constitution. I' CONSTITUTIOPl NOVE BER 141921.
