SUNDAY MOTNTNG NOVFMBEfl3 13 1921 I Georgia Tech Shows Superiority Over ff if Hoppers 9 Georgetown's Defense' Shattered By Smashing of Golden Tornado Byrne Recovers Fumble and Runs. 95 Yards for Lone- Marker of Georgetown Eleven. BY CLIFF WIlEATIJ Disappointment again rides in the drawing room of the Pullinun that is arryint the Georgetown football players bark' to Washington. Once more Ui heavy cloud of defeat' that canie with the advent of the HiLi top pets has given way to the sunshine that comes with Georgia Tech victory and. all peaceful at the flat The Golden Tornado ytaterday re pulsed th invasion of the Irishmen who lust rent btrutfgle 21 to 7.

marked the third defeat of the hoppers at Grant field in as many ears cud the feeling must be pretty general around Washington at tlJlS tune that beating a Georgia. Tech team on paper is a whole lot easier accomplished than plucking the stingers the Jackets on the home lot. Kieiidine' warriors came down this time with. every advantage in their favor. The opestera said that Georgetown an going to win.

and. they oiitiuued to say it until the un mistakable bigus of' Teths splendid form made their appearance. Alter that expert opinion in football matters was smashed into a million. pieces and there was nothing left but to predict the figures of the. Yellow Jackets' ultimate victory.

Tech was unable to accomplish this great triumph without putting forth perhaps the best game he has displayed this season. Georgetown. beaten by figures that are wont to prove misleading. to thos that were not present to see the discussion settled has. a fine football team one that would have beaten the Golden Tornado and badly too had not the golden lads in the form that every coach strives to attain for jut one game during the.

seasons grind. The Hilltoppe were not disappointing. Far' from it. They know football and letter they understand how to play it. But yesterday they were up against a proposition that no other machine has been up against this' season.

They found a Tech. line that had been criticised they found liatkfield men that were ready to die in order to prove to the critics that the Golden Tornado was no gentle Irteze In short the iliiltoppere were' face to face with' eleven opponents that were seeking this one opportunity to prove they hail a right to a plats in the sun. The risitma players failed to stem the tide just us others ave done and just as others will ntlDue to do. CO51 PARING TEAMS JX OFFENSIVE ACTION. When one team pains but approximately 3U yards from scrimmage in quarters it is logical to presume that its attack is tar below that of the average grid machine.

It. is also a mighty good sign that. the defense holding a backfield to this touch territory is capable of being praised to the skies without fear of smearing it on. The truth of the matter in yes tlrdas game is that Tech's defense stopped an attack that has been powerful in every game it has been started in. There is no comparing the ground gained by the llUltopperll and that annexed by Tech.

The figures. would lie. There isn't the difference the figures say exist. Georgetown had no Iitfrla to rant through the forwards at every plunge but she did have Bill Kenyon. who is being mentioned for all kinds of honors up yonder in the territory covered by the Hill toppers.

The vis hors had no. Red Harron the ends. but they did have Malley whose name has been- mentioned for all middle Atlantic In XT The Irishmen had no rank Ferst to sift through openings in the line and to punt for an average of more than to yards. but they did have Jack Iavin who has been rated as one of the best punters in the country. The ability of these men is well.

known and it was their prowess that formed the beacon directing the predictions the experts. These play. era werestopped as completely as was no McMillin last year and Howard Berry some years ago and as was Johnny McQuade when De came. down to tame the Jackets single-banded in 3319. The- fact that their combined ef forts' were productive ofjmt approximately 30 yards' gain from scrimmage compliment enough for the Tech' and secondary defense.

nd tstifieation sufficient for i belief of White andGQld supporters that Tech's defense is all right and has been all the season. It the' Jacket line felt it wns necessary to smear the Ililltoppers' plays in order to earn. redemption for' the Penn State ileefat the Tornado lines- men succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. If they wished to make Georgetown's attack resemble the most ferocious lunge of a- wink expert. Tech linesmen can rest assured that good fairy was with them from the start ready to grant their every.

rd WORK OP LINEMEN WAS piT FEATURE. For one to assert that the work of the Tech forwards featured yesterday is running dangerously near to wounding the feelings of Captain Judy Harlans thousands of friends. And yet. to my mind. that Yellow Jacket jine was the thing that will be- re.

longest by people viewing the hostilities. Zilayoe it was because the line played the first real football game it has uncorked this season. That is the rush players played their first tame in the style that Tech backer hue always believed them capable of producing. Picking out any single player for. discussion is impossible.

My picture of that game was the heroic efforts of those linesmen to fight off the peril that lurked in the hurting of Flavin. Kenyon. Malley' and the rest of the bunch. They were- capable of advancing the bill. but to carry it through that line and around snob men as John Stston Mitchell n4 others was simply impossible.

People closely affiliated with ath- letie affair at Georgia Tech state that tie Unit. was out to redeem itself. Arid It it didn't succeed some 2000 spectators are corne to wonder ist was wrong with. their eyes and ienitP are poia to he called in for onsnltatOD also. Farther up ft was Mated that the failiaj to fee Judy Harlan as the outstanding figure In jester- days conflict is in imminent danger of being lynched by the Tornado captain's adherents.

If one is speaking of individual he should be. strung up for placing any single players showing above that of Ibrlan. I don't know what inspired Harlan. ft might have been that Judy failed to rip that Penn State line to tatters. It might have been that Judy was play ing his nut to last game in a Georgia Tech uniform.

Thesk things no one knows. That I am fairly convinced at this tlm. that the Ililltoppers are decidedly under the impression that no human being mold hit them as hard ns Captain Uarlan did during the course of yesterday' proceedings. The best way to illustrate Judy's work J9 figures. In the first half he gained twice more ground through the line than his neatest competitor wax able to gain through.

around. under and over the Georgetown bulwark. And in. the second half Captain' IIar Ian kept up th average despite the fact that in the final quarter- be was not called upon so frequently. GEORGETOWN EARNS BUT TWO FIRST DOWNS.

It is but necessary to state that Georgetown earned two first downs against the Tornado to prove the assertion that Tech's defense was of the most stubborn type. The statistical demon of The Constitution Roy White has discovered that five first. downs were scored by the visitors hut he finds also that three of them were gifts of the officials. Penalties proved fostlr. us three first downs' will evidence It is hardly possible to conceive of a team rating as high' as George- town setting hut two earned first downs.

These came in the final quarter the results of forward passing that was instituted in the desperation of the Irishmen to add to their lone touchdown. Any team is liable to come through with a forward pass that will net as much as ten yards. In fact when an aerial attempt is successfully completed it is only in' rare instances that the distance gained does not pass this figure. So the fart that not one first down was gained through or around the Tech forwards is further proof of the brilliant game they played. Quite to the contrary was the ground gaining of the Jackets.

Captain. Ilartan alone probably' gained from scrimmage three or four snore time the territory annexed by the Washington eleven. UN Barren ir ing his regular wide end sweeps. was' responsible for a lot' of ground. Anti.

Frank Ferst following his interference per schedule. and leaving it just in time to. take advantage of an opening in the line. as is customary with this. sterling back.

was second in advancing to Captain Harln. The' total of first- downs. compiled by the Golden Tornado was 27 just about ns many as the. fads have rolled up this jear and figures that were nideti to a remarkably small degree penalties. The Jackets worked for their pains made theta because their attack so far overshadowed the Hill- toppers' defense that few of their lunzes fell short of their mark.

Kenton Was the leading Kround- gainer for the Georgetown machine. II' wasv rendered some assistance by DuIour the young quarterback that has played to brilliantly for the hill- toppers this season. Flavin was a hit to the good in punting over Ferst but the difference was so small as to be negligible. Other men in the Georgetown backfield might have been left on ttj bench so far as carrying the ball was concerned. The Tech defense was set for them.

and their attack was silenced as quickly as it was started. DELAYED BUCK WORKS FOR THE JACKETS. Live and learn" is one the mottoes that has' made Tech football teams successful. The little stunts of they opposition that are pulled againstthe Tornado when the stunts are productive of results are usually added to the repertoire of the Tech machine and. as a rule the plays prove successful.

You will have little difficulty in recalling the effects of that delayed hock shown by. the Xittany Lions against Tech on the Polo' grounds. The play had sound football in it and Conch Alexander adopted it. Yesterday it was displayed for the firsj tine. It worked.

It is a play that seems impossible of solution during the progress of a single- game. The Jackets' intelligent linesmen were unable to cope with it against Penn State and their inability was no snore marked on that occasion than was Georgetown's yesterday. It was used two or three times and good gains resulted on every attempt. Barron and Harlan are tbe carriers as the attack is used Dr the Jackets and they make excellent vehicles for the play. Had it been used on two occasion when the local collegians were in striking distance- of the' Hill- toppers' goal it is doubtful if Tech's final points would have totaled just one.

As a matter of fact it was bad breaks that deprived Tech of two touchdowns. Once theball was on Georgetown' one-foot- line as the whistie rung out the dose yE the first half. And in the final quarter ey Scarboio fumbled on ths liilltop- per's yard line Byrne scooping up the ball and raving to Georgetown oulv marker. that young fellow came dangerously Tamer- losing his claim to immortal icy around the Washington institution. When the ball eut hurtling from.

Scarboro' hands and a George- town. player scooped ft up it was announced in the press coop that King was the Blue' and- Gray player that was eating up the. distance be- tween his own goal line and that of the Tornado. The impression lasted until late last night hen an Associated Press reported heard it rumored that Byrne was the hero. A phone call routed Coach Exendine.

at the Georgian Ter- race and it was confirmed. A terrible mistake had been made. Byrne is hereby given his just deserts. It was a- great run and provided one' of the real. features of the struggle BALL MOSTLY.

That semnd. were or jess of thoughtless- ness permitted Vanderbilt sin undefeated southern team to tie- GeorgUs score. rims gauss ended favor of Vanderbilt.

The expression Is used advisedly. When Georgia scored its first touth- down the crowd marvelled that it had not veered a half dozen before. When Vanderbilt scored its touchdown tie 5 tai sat. silent in dumb- amazement. The Vanderbilt student body actually did not know that the Gold and Black' i had scored until they' saw the ball brought out for goal after touchdown.

Th pitiful part of the whole wretched business is that Georgia probaMy played the best football came of the season today. Yandy has no Mouch machine. It has a defense of which my. southern college might be proud. Only its running attack seems weak.

Against this defense Georgia was able to run up- eighteen first downs Dud in just two of the first downs the forwardness figured. Outhe other hand Vanderbilt made. but two first downs against. Georgia and both of thetfe downs came in the early part of the third reriod and had no effect on the scoring. Lets get right down to business and tell the horrid details of how Vanderbilt tied that score.

In the first half Georgia had been held to one touch. down. principally through Georgia er. rors' of commission andttniission. Georgia backs fumbled the ball whenever it seemed certain that the team was headed for a touchdown.

At that though everything looked serene for the lied and Black. Smack Thompson could buck for three or four yards any time he listed and Jim Ueynolds seemed to be. able skin tackle for a first down whenever he was called In the second period after' Georgia hind worked the' ball down by this Thompsonian line-bucking and Key- nolds tackle-skinning. Hartley was thrown into the breach. It had been understood that Hartley would i ot be used in the.

Vnndy game but that Un derstanding was smashed when Stege- man saw a chance to score despite fumbles and despite penalties. FORWARD PASS PAVES. a WAt TO TOUCHDOWN. On. the veryfirst play Jim Reynolds thrqw a forward pass to Hartley over the short side the line and- Hartley wasn't downed until he had readied Vanderbilt's yard line.

Jim Reynolds wasgiven the honor of but king the' ball over. There was no more scoring In the period. but Georgia was gaining ground as it listed and- Vanderbilt coutlnt gain at all so all seemed sweet from an' Athenian viewpoint. The' Vanderbilt student body evidently thought so as it snake danced between halves. The dance was a tort.

of funeral procession that even iicely music committed by a band in dock trousers and Norfolk jackets couldn't- rob of its solemnity. When the teams came buck on the field it was apparent that Sandy hail taken on new life. Its' defense had. stiffened and when it got the ball it was able to reel off vu first downs. Still Georgia was in possession of the ball most of the time and was suf fering little in the exchange of kicks.

Time period ended with the seven- point lead looking big enough to win any' time. It vas In the first five minutes of the last period that' Vanderbilt play' ed its- trump card. When Vanderbilt decided that the exigencies of the occasion demanded that' trumps he led the ball was on Yandys own yard line. Ryan dropped back in regular punt formation and to all intents and purposes punted. The. Georgia players had not noted that a lean and hungry looking cassius with the startling patronym of Smith was lurking somewhere behind the punter and wa eligible to receive the ball without notifying the Georgians of his intent. When the ball was kicked Smith was down.

In the meantime. Mr. Smut was approaching. No Georgia man gave him the slightest attention i picked the ball up. No Georgia player even went through the formality of giving pursuit is be trotted across for a touctdown.

Naturally Georgia protested with- some emphasis on th scoring of this touchdown. It was tremendously humiliating to base the score tied by just exactly the play that tb team-had been drilled to meet. After this touchdown Georgia used. a desperate effort IT score again. Twice in the last five minutes of play the ball was worked within Vaeder'- tilts 20 zone and on one occa' ion Pew attempted a placement kick from the yard line but.
