He went over' all of ob riaons conduct in connection with tire Chicago coDnDtlOnaud said that' he would never support a man who had bolted and fought against. his party prganitattoa II Robertson did then. Conkling expressed to his friends entire confidence of the rejec tlon of both Platt and himself by the New York legislature at the time when under the constitution the election can take place. Oookiing produced a list of the members of the legislature and the theclusi---aeation of their politics to show that hit re-election is certain end also Plaits and said that would not go nearer Albany than New York city and that ho will re-elected without asking for it.

Ht spoke bitter terms of the president. charging him with having violated his honor. Cooking wd he would regard his re-election as an indorsement of hla fight against Robertson and a rebuke to the administration but that what is more important his re-election will be a commission to him as an independent anti- administration sens tor that he appeals to his party representatives on the woe be- tween him and the administration and a re election will authorize him to fight the administration to the gad of its term and strike in a blow wherever he can get a chance. He declared his purpose to make war on the administration from the date of his re-election. Re expressed the belief that the senate will remain in session until he comet back.

A friend remarked that the Date would adjourn this week. Conking said that he thought not that the democrats were now in the majority and would be shrewd enough to continue the session to give a chance to open his aggressive war against the president. Walking up end down the room Conkling spoke of the president as another Hayes said the republican party was disgusted with this sort of president that the continuation of Garfield in his treachery towards republicans. would make the party solid for a stalwart like sot. and would result in the nut presidential convention nominating Grant or some man like him who as Oonkiing says can always be found when wanted by the republican party on all occasions.

Cockling made the third term quite prominent in talking with his friends and spoke of his fight as the beginning of the contest mi the defeat in IBM of Garfield and the nomination of some determined stalwart. Conkling referred with some bitterness to the action of the republican senators in not standing by him. For more than three hours Cockling remained in his rooms receiving and talking with friends who called. The president when spoken to about the matter said that he was advised of the in tention to resign and was prepared for it. tie said that Cockling's Con did not in the least disconcert the administration that the sun will rise and set UM tame when Conklmg was a member of the sen ate.
