WQson whohu jo returned from Coal Greek when the following conversation took place Got back' Yes How coair Oh well get enough now. How Were mad arrangement to get ten car lead of domestic coat a day aad while I was at Coal Creek I hipped sixty cars. What was the reason we could not get Ubfjre Nothing but a lack oriransportatlon faolitles Why I thought they were short at the mines No they can ship to all who send can there. What about the priceT' The price is the same. No redaction.

What la coal worth now at the mineaT' Ihn dollar a ton. Just twice what it was Uit season. How is that Well tbe mines have not made any thing forsix or seven yean and I think the least the papera can say about it tbe better it tiLl be. If we begin to howl about the prica the mines will get mad and quit shipping here and then we will have to pay twelve dollars a ton for Pennsylvania coal. rben Atlanta is la I very bad fix if tbe mines or the railroads get their backs up.

It is just that way. If it was summer you could talk but as we cant build the Georgia Western In time for this winter we better keep quiet. And thus the oonversition ended. An Enormous ATLUU January 17. Editors Constitu tlon In yonr Sunday mornings issue I no.

lice an article headed Two Accidents on tbe State Riilroad in which yonr reporter unintentionally no doubt not only exaggerates the accidents but does great injus Lice to In officer of the titate railroad. He a ates under the authority of Mr. Beardsley train dispatcher tblt in the accident 11 Marietta on Saturday last the engine was turned completely over mtaning if I understand the term tbat the engine uiade a somersault and alighted again on its wheels. There are only two ways thll an engine could well turn completely over e. headforemost like an acrobat or sideways in tbe acrobatic turn the engine would first stand on its head then turn over on Its back if I may use the upres sion then with another flop alight on its wheels unless the engine nsd become uncoupled from the tender it wuld neces jirily bare followed the engine in this novel acrobatic performance and unless tbe cars had bfcame uncoupled from the render they would have followed in like manner.

There were attached to the engine at time of accident six freight and two passenger cars giving total length of train including engin' and tender. of three hundred and twenty five feet. This would have brought tbe engine at the end of the performance something over six hundred and fifty feet from the point it first ran off. In the side movement the engine would first turn on its side then on its bsck again on its side and then on its wheels Tbe distance from top of rail to top of cab of engine is thirteen feet width of cab about six feet. It does not require much calculation to determine that at the end of this somersault the engine wonld De fonnd ni tbint over two feel from the track provided the ground and track were bui levI which was the case in thla wta nee.

It is scarcely necessary to explain that tbe cars if not uncoupled would follow the ide turn over of the engine just they would tbe headforemost one. If either of these novel and I may say unparallelled performances had occurred the engineer conductor passengers and bystanders might have been too excited to have observed it. But unfortunately when tbe engine and traiDllid settle dotn.thesltu- ILioD of ftai18 was snchu to utterly demolish either of these theories. The two passenger cars and five of the freight can and the rear truck of the Iron car ere still on the track. The front of the engine was only seventy feet from th point where it ran oft The engine tender UJd front truck of one car were off the track.

la the case of th engine the wheels 00 one side were on the ground out side the edge of the crosatieiwhlle the wnee a jn tbe other side were about midway between the two raili. If the engine turned over at it certainly turned completely over. as it was found standing nearly erect in tbe position described. If your reporter had made the statement of thU remarkable and unparalleled performance on his own responsibility I should hue paid no attention to it but to credit it to a responsible officer of the Bute road a little too much. If Mr.

Beardealy made the statement a remarkable ehangt has come over him. I have known him seven years atilt in all bat time have never caught Dim in a lie and he has on more than one occasion been placed in a position when if given to prevarication be wonld certainly have slipped up So much for his truthfulness. Four years ago he was appointed train dispatcher of the Western and Atlantic railroad a. position in which he ha change of the distribution or all 1 10 1 can and the management of all train oa he road. In btefour yean we hare bad ms few acci dents IS any road in the south tlotith standing we run from thirty to fifty trains per day and in no instance where In accident has occurred have I been able to trace it to any fault of his This would indicate tbat he is not a fool and I can only con olude that your reporter misunderstood him.

I did not hear the conversation between your reporter and. Mr. Beardlev. but was present at the conclusion of It. When the reporter liked how much track had to be built to lit around the wreck.

Mr. Burdi ley did not know' andappealed to me Ireplied from the description of the run-off I supposed about one hundred and fifty feet which the reporter In statement has only multiplied by three tusking one hundred and fUty yards. If rout reporter could mw a- mistake in so plain a matter IS' tile difference- between yards and feet it ijlair to assume that he might hive become slightly mixed in complicated an affair as the. acrobatic per tormance of a locomotive and eight cars A Xaaid before I am sure your reporter did not Intend to injure MrA-Beardsley. whatever his feelings towards ths 8 tat road mlxhtbe.

83 far a the general vpuhlic concerned. I donot supposslthey disturh their mind to any rreat extent to whether-the engine made one somersault or ten but to railroad men it altogether a differ support himself and family by railroading Tbere teno railroad manager in thi eonn try would' employ a train-dispatcher wco knew so little of railroads as to make a statement thai an engine running eight miles' as thourt could TUB off at a switch' where there no briJge or embankment tThe Success which has attended the eflbrb ot the proprietors to make Ta WKXIIT Cossrrrmotjsuperiorfeta any weekly published latthe toatttern sUtes Is' emi uenUy iwtisJactoryVieod convinces them that rthejriworkb appreciated.
