It Wal sufficient to show A tine crowd of spectators that Varaado is in line trim that the work of Alexander and his assistants has been of the right kind. and the sans flied away from Grant field With visions of how these lads are going to fight when the real. opposition Is met.

Little- Offensive. Yesterday the Jacket were con- little about ground gaining that is gaining against a team of Tech's caliber but Wake Forest was pos- Ceased of something that rather tends to keep down scoring a dug- Ired determination to throw everything against the relentless pres- sure of a. force that could not be denied any more than a water can keep from rolling down hill. Wake orest had that quality. all right.

but lack of punch' was evidenced from the start. For Instance five yards from Tech's goat line before players and spectators realized fully that the 331 football season was under way Wake Forest had the punch been in the backfield. or rather had not Tech possessed a line and flanks that were not to be pierced. the Visitors would have scored a touch- Uown an event that was as far from their expectations as the- North Pole Js from being the next meeting la of the amalgamated order of Ui Islanders. But Wake Forest did know how to take their beating fn good race and earned the praise of loach Alexander for their same battle.

Wake Forest players taught a clean hard game. Alexander declared last night and it Is a privilege to play such thorough sjportsmen. Only First Down. Their only first down. scored In the second quartet.

was the result of a forward pass that netted 10 yards. This short aerial effort was i used time after time by the Wake orest pilot. hut it was completed if on few occasions. That it is risky Is shown In the fact that there were more Tech players than Wake Forest warriors around the ball on jr10st attempts. The little ground pain In dune i the- visitors resulted from the Slungin of Armstrong and Heck- man.

This lleckman. a star of last year for Wake Forest. is a real V. iriddift. hut faced with the tern- le problem of trying to break through such men as Daddy" Amlz Dummy' bey.

Jimmy has the distinction of. scoring the first touchdown of. the sea son for the Tornado. and it was no yard line- buck that brought him the honor. but a ripping run around right end in which he had to batter his way through a lock of Wake Forest tacklers that sought to halt him.

Jud Ran Line. Captain Harlan was the JUIa nut 0 told. and declined to permit the weather to affect his line plunging. No record was kept of the ground Judy gained through the heavy Wake Forest line. but on practically every one of his tarts he tore off from four to IS yards and he was not brought down' in a single instance before a gal had been attained.

John Staton. who is giving his account of this battle in other col umns in this mornings Constitution and who certainly knows whereof he speak in connection with said game. Is naturally too modest to say anything about the fine showing he made at left end. but the writer isn't going to see John left out In the rain. not when he played so brilliantly during his term of service.

fly JOHX STATOST. TecVs Left Bad. Out on Grant' field about 2:30 o'clock twenty-eight boys wearing gold jerseys trotted out on the field. At this part of my story the boys were merely hot and laboring under the heavy paraphernalia that It takes to play a game- of football. Ten minutes later.

eleven or these same youths were in such a condi. lion of heat that the dictionary would not suffice to express it. Twenty minutes1 later they were In such shape that you would insult them had. you even spoken of their condition as th superlative degree of hotnens To be perfectly frank about the mutter Saturday. was.

no day. for football. Even th spectators had difficulty in maintaining their seat in opposition to the glaring sun The players had. to slow down' from sheer exhaustion. For that reason the game was not.

aafaat and snappy as some that have been played but nevertheless it was. not en tirely devoid of Interesting-features. Wake Forest had on big chance to break Into the- hall of fame. And believe me they were willing enough to take it but. being very.

unselfish they considered someone else be side themselves. Anti the other party was not quits so willing when Jack MeDonough and Jndy Harlan nulled their- Alfonso and Gaston stunt on the first kickoff of the game that was not So bad. but when the Wake' men. recovered then ther was quits a little excitement. TH Agilist It Tech faced a condition that she had not confronted since the PiU game.

Fortunately the. boys- were fresh and raring to make up for a little hard luck. So with the ball on their own yard Jlneth fellows held. Four times th wake Forest backs endeavored to span that small space of four yards. The line held like a- ton walk and the ball returned into tile possession or the golden warriors on their own yard line.

Wake Forest nav- Ing lost two yards In the attemptto put the ball across. This was pyob. ably the prettiest playing- of. th game for both teams Being fresh they alt put everything theyhad Into' the play. This work on the part of.

Tech seemed to take the heart out of the Wake Forest erw for not oacV after- that- did they' show the tarn aggressiveness. From that positlon on the six yard line. Tech carried th ball with. a buck run. straight down the field for a touchdown.

Jimmy Brewster- made some very fine runs during his drive and. deserved to make th touchdown. Paul Lyman then pulled the Dill Finclier stunt and kicked goal. This first touch. down must have come in the first four or flv minute of play.

It took only nine plays from scrimmage to put the ball across. Tech then kicked off and held for downs. Then another march was egun. By this time the heat was telling on the boys. and.

both teams wen forced to play more slowly. It was Just- about this juncture. that every yard gained meant about a llon of energy and IL pound of flesh lost. However. Tech seemed very well satisfied with the swap.

for a few gallons later. Jack McDonough slipped through left guard for five yards and a touchdown. Al Staton kicked goal. That ended the scoring for- the first quarter the quarters being only ten minutes long. Another drive at the beginning- of the second quarter netted th desired ground and Captain Judy rammed through right guard for six points.

John St took his turn at the goaL It happened to go through. Nearly forgot to give the. devil hi dues. The dues In this particular case happened to be the' lone first down that the boys from North Carolina registered. This all Important rent came just after Wake Forest gained possession of the ball at th beginning- of the second quarter.

Hecknian tried right-end for-a yard loss. Theyllned up with the sam formation and shifted tight It a run around their- right end but eyerytbing lx not as good as It stems. Armstrong ran back about flv yards and tossed a pretty one to Beckman for ten yards and first Jimmy Brewstw knock. d' himlpnt of bounds. Then they proeeedea' to the ball on downs.

Cuds Fi RBBL. After Judy touchdown the whole backfield had scored with th ex' eeptioa of Red Red kind of felt funny about this so-he made up his mind to ret In style also. At this Urn Tech was piddling around with th ball about her- own yard Oeech called for run-around left end. Red then kissed his comrades a- fond goodbye and started on a long journey. There was some op.

position by Wake Forest to his go lag but he overruled this. and finished his trip about sixty. yards later. This was the longest as well as the prettiest run of the game. Paul turn dm.
