Sf 3- noNsnrunoN ATLAOTA TUESDAY Downfall of Chicks Has Started Crackers to 1 Benny Leonard Wins World Championship From Freddie Welsh English Lightweight Title Holder Knocked Out in the Ninth Round of Ten- Round Match in New York. Welsh Badly Punished. New York. May. 28 Benny Leonard won the worlds weight championship by knocking out Freddie Welsh in the ninth round of a ten- round match here.

tonight. Welsh. downfall came at the end of a series of rushes by Leonard that drove him from corner to corner. The champion had taken a severs beating during the early' rounds and the pun ishment had begun to tell when the gong for the ninth round sounded. Leonard fresh the moment he had entered the ring.

Jumped forward and met the champion as ho Was leaving hi corner and delivered a shower of lefts and rights to the face and Welsh vainly trying to ward oft the blows worked his way Into Leonards corner. where Leonard succeeded in reaching him with a smashing right on the jaw. Welsh felt on one knee and hugged the ropes. HI strength gone. he strove weakly to strike a.

fighting pose. As he left the ropes Leonard landed and Welsh hit the floor. He struggled to his feet twice more. but each time he was met by Leonards rights to the face and bead and. again he fell to the floor.

Welsh Takes Count of Nine. Again the champion took the count of nine before he rose from the last knockdown. I. tried to stand but fell across the ropes. It was only a Question of moments when' he would have fallen and been counted out.

At this point Referee McPartland leaped between the two men. pushing Leonard away. and carried the defeated champion to his corner. A. score of men occupying- ringside seats jumped into the ring- and.
