And even then I couldn't get a. wink. I just thought' and thought. But you slept. I can tell It by your eyes" Not till very late.

I don't see how you could sleep at all. But you don take this a seriously as I do. You don appreciate what it means. Why Sheila. I can only see you once In a while like this just a if we were merely engaged.

Sheila brushed back his Indignant forelock. Oh well. she returned we haven't had a real engagement yet you know. Her husbands expression grew tense But Its infamous. he exclaimed.

Then she sat down 1 the davenport and smiled Up at ith.

But mother I really don't used any more room and we have every modern convenience. Of course and then Scott will get along quickly and then you'll be able to Come farther downtown. Ruth's face fell. Oh mother.

and I thought you'd rave about it. I'm not thinking of the time when Ill be wealthy. Scott makes up to me for any money we might have. Of course dear and that' as It should be. of course but I'm sure Scott has ambition to get ahead.

Surely you don't want to stay all your days In an uptown flat doing your own. work. Mrs. Rowland's words were slightly Ironical. They had the effect of making Ruth feel ill at east They took away all the pride that she had had la her apartment and made her feel aa though it did not amount to anything' at all.

They forced her to tell her mother in self-defense a thing that the had not expected to de in her for the present Scott had a raise yesterday she said trying to speak casually. Mrs. Rowland beamed. So pack your things No" But you've got to do as I tell you now. It' your duty a my wife" Not if youVe in the wrong. And you are. You'll look' at everything differently a day Or two. You'll realize that your father is right Father 1 a damned foot Torn she rebuked.

"I've cut my eye teeth sure enough. he said bitterly. "Bet you two I haven't an illusion heft. Youd be kinder to a dog. The girl rave a little moan of pain.

It Isn't true she protested. It is true. He rounded on her in cold fury. "You're as hard as he is. You're for number one- every time.

I'm a meal ticket. that's all. You showed your true' colors as soon as you got me' hooked. You wouldn't go away with me as any other wife would. You bamboozled me Into coming back here so that you could fix things with him.

And now you're knuckling In to everything he demands. And you have the cheek to pretend that you're do- Ing it for my sake. But you cant pull the wool over my eyes- any longer. You married me for what you could get out of me just as you'd have married him If you had the chance. His father strode aerpes the room and clutched htm by the collar.

Eat your words you cub" he commanded. Apologize to your wife Oh no' pleaded Sheila horrified at the turn 01 affairs. He doesn't mean It he cant mean it. Roger Ballantine tightened his hold. Apologize he repeated.

mother money and social position don't mean anything to me. Of cour e. I want a pretty home but I don't crave money for what It will bring In the way Of material things really I don't. Of course. you don't Ju now but you'll get all over this loves young dream idea after been married a while.

How can you say thatr Why child. Its true. JUst now you think that nothing matters but Scott. In six months or a year you'll get tired of living this way. You'll want more to occupy your mind you 11 get tired of waiting for Scott to come.

home for dinner and you'll begin to find that there' are other people in the world beside just you two. Of course there was a glimmering of truth in what Mrs. Rowland said but not all of it WI true by any means and there was no need of telling Ruth anything of the kind. It certainly did no good and. with her temperament.

wa likely to do a great deal of tarm. Before Ruth. eyes rose the nest on West End avenue where Jack Bond had lealled that apartment. In her. minds eye she saw the little grand piano that was to have been her wedding ores- ent toe gorgeous furnishings bought with rack money and in Imagination' she could tee on her finger the- heavy ring that she had worn for a short time end that bad brought her nothing but misery.

A though in answer to the thoughts that teemed through her' brain Ruth' mother remarked suddenly. IS think Jack will marry. that silly little Natalie Jergens. "That's tine. Ruth responded quickly.

Natalie will Jut suit Jack. He can dominate her to his hearts content. Mrs. Rowland looked at her daughter sharplyr but said nothing more. She had planted the seed of discontent Ruth's mind whether she- had intended to do it or- not.

The very way that Ruth Sad prun to Scot defense showed that in her heart of hearts she felt that she had something real- to defend. Now she had been since her marriage. successful not herself but so that to her mother eye and the eyes of other people like her Seott might appear absolutely desirable rom every viewpoint. She carried that thought with her all day a nd was more restless than she had been since ner marriage. She kept wondering whether her mothers words were true or not.

She and Scott were perfectly happy now because they had each other. Not once had Ruth regretted anything nut after the first dread of marriage itself had been dispelled that old fear that had clouded her wedding day and that was really a re suit of the stiffness of the ceremony and the strangeness of. it all Slut Scott only two nights before. had said something- about getting Into a rut. She simply must not allow that to happen and for Scott's own sake she must try to spur him on to greater things.

Of course she wanted him successful she wouldn't have him lees than any man in the world. Ruth did not know Scott well enough to realize that in a way hi business sense was lacking and what business sense he lad possessed had been seriously Impaired by the war and would take time to coax back Into working action. MASS. Dl Government. About to Is- sue Proclamation Suppressing Irish Organization Sinn Feiners Look to Wilson for Aid. Dublin January 7. The govern ment.

is reported here. is about to issue a proclamation tightening the laws against the Sinn FelnUL Some months ago a proclamation was issued under the Crimes act. declaring that the Sinn Felner were dangerous. This was the necessary preliminary step to the suppression of the organization. but no subsequent step has yet taken.

Once a proclamation suppressing the Sinn Fein is Issued. it becomes a crime to belong to the organization and the government can prosecute any member and send him to Jail. Imprisonment does not affect the Sinn Yemen unless they do not get their own way. They cause trouble in the prisons and at the present tint there 1 virtually a state of siege. in the Mountjoy pris- on in Dublin because one- Sinn Felner there 1 not treated as a po UUcal prisoner.

To Cvlnee Parliament. The Sloan Fein intends to summon its own parliament and has already held two preliminary meetings. It treats the last election as an act of self-determination and look upon all persons elected. regardless of party a members of the Irish re public assembly. Accordingly.

they have issued invitations to their own members as well as the Carsonites and nationalists but no one of the other' party members is taking any notice of it. tour of the Sinn Felners elected are In imprisonment in England and Ireland while Patrick Mac- Carten Li am Mellowes and DIatmuld Lynch are In the United States This situation has delayed the calling of the national assembly When the assembly Is called the question is whether the government will ignore it or suppress it. Two influences are operating on the judgment of the lieutenant Viscount French who is the real ruler. One side declares that the Stan Felners have an impractical policy and will wear themselves out If let alone while if they are harassed they' will retain the country's support. It is said he is a home- ruler.

but will Insist on obedience to the law. The Sinn Peiners intend if the national assembly meets to nominate Professor Do Valera Arthur Griffiths and Count Plunkett as delegates to the peace conference. They will claim representation as If Ireland were a separate state like Belgium or Serbia. They do not expect that their claim will be granted but are doing all they can to get President Wilson raise the Irish question. Look to Wilson for Aid.
