Milburn ran 13.5 and 13.6 winning heats in the 110 meter high hurdles while Prefontaine and Tarry Harrison won heats of the 5,000 meters. In the 400 meter dash qualifying, all the favorites passed the first test.

John Smith, the world 440 yard record holder, was second in his heat.
