Orlando Sentinel: PRODUCT: OS DESK: LOC DATE: 10-15-2006 EDITION: FLA ZONE: FLA PAGE: B2.0 DEADLINE: 20.6 OP: kchan COMPOSETIME: 20.10 CMYK B2 Orlando Sentinel SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2006 COMMENTARY Scott MAXWELL TAKING NAMES Tn nfFpncp tn orcive? AAVin ic cVip In rl Hi nor? For years, State Rep. Sheri Mclnvale claimed to be a gay-friendly Democrat. But when she switched parties, she apparently found new friends. The latest mailing that Mclnvale and her Republican Party sent out is supposedly about immigration. But you wouldn't know that by looking at the main photo she used.

The photo Mclnvale picked features her Democratic opponent, Scott Randolph, standing with a drag queen. (It's Miss Sammy, who's probably one of Orlando's most convincing queens. But a queen nonetheless.) Above the photo is a line that says Randolph is "Wrong for our families." And on top of the picture of Randolph and the queen is a line that says: "Who do you think will have to pay their medical bills and other costs?" If Mclnvale had decided to run a campaign based on homophobia, that'd certainly be her right. But here's the funny part: Mclnvale insists she wasn't try to denigrate gays at all. When I first spoke with her, she insisted she simply chose "a good picture" of her opponent.

(Apparently, she couldn't find a good picture of him alone or with his wife.) She claims she barely paid attention to the man in a dress and wig standing with him. (Which Miss Sammy would probably find just as insulting as it is hard to believe.) And Mclnvale claimed that placing that picture below a sentence that said "Wrong for our families" wasn't meant to say a thing about gay people. "Oh, I would hope you wouldn't take it that way," she said. "I'd think there is no way that could ever be used as a negative. This is a health-care and immigration piece." I'm not completely sure whether Mclnvale was trying to con me or herself.

But others seem to think the mailing's message was crystal clear. Orlando's only openly gay official, Councilwoman Patty Sheehan, called the ad "one of the most dishonest, disgusting, and morally reprehensible things I have ever seen a political candidate do." And the gay-supporting Rainbow Democratic Club said: "Republicans afraid of losing in this election cycle should do more than denigrate minority communities to manipulate voter fears." Even Patrick Howell, the head of the Log Cabin Republicans, said Mclnvale should apologize. So Mclnvale did. Sort of. In a statement later in the week, she wrote: "There are those that were offended by a recent party mailer.

There was, of course, no intent to offend anyone. However, I regret that some individuals took it out of context and as a result had their feelings hurt." Really, it was one of those I'm-sorry-YOU-were-offended things. But Mclnvale also pointed to her past championing of gay-rights causes, like gay adoption, and vowed to continue being a champion. And Howell said "Mclnvale has carried more water for the gay and lesbian community than any other member of the Central Florida delegation Republican or Democrat." He's right. In fact, Mclnvale was one of the few pols at the last grand-opening celebration of Gay Days.

I remember chatting with her that night for quite some time. I liked Democratic Sheri. I liked Republican Sheri. But when all of this is said and done, I have to wonder if even Mclnvale herself will be able to stomach this newest Sheri the one who allowed herself to wield fear and bigotry as a cheap political weapon. FUNDRAISER NETS CLAWSFULOFCASH If you get more than 540 people together for a lobster roast, you' better have plenty of butter-drenched potatoes, clam chowder, grilled corn and beer.

Well, the folks at the Ronald McDonald House of Orlando did just that at their fundraiser Friday night. But they also had the featured entree 1,200 of them. For the few of you who passed your math FCAT, you realize that's like two lobsters and we're talking big, red, juicy fellows, straight from Maine for every single diner. "Actually," said Ronald McDonald House director Lou Ann DeVoogd, "we were counting on two-and-a-quarter per person." That's a lot of crustaceans. And so the eating at SeaWorld's Ports of Call commenced though not everyone filled up on seafood.

"The corn," volunteered K92 morning-show host Ellis B. Feaster. "I really, really like the corn." "No, the cookies," said performing-arts-center champion Jim Pugh, who had a plate of the chocolate-chip treats in front of him. The gluttony was all for a good cause, mind you. The dinner and auction raised $200,000 for the agency that houses families with seriously ill children.

And the money is certainly needed. While the group's houses have expanded to 59 rooms, board chairman Matt Certo said that "during the summer, we still have awaiting list." Scott Maxwell, who can honestly say he ate less than the expected per-person share of lobster the cookies, however, are another matter, can be reached at smaxwellorlandosentinel.com or 407420-6141. 1 With iM ml MclNVALE MISS SAMMY RANDOLPH "would siipport.Jesalizing "WPHiVPHri alot of those T1 I I lj fl IB PBF Who do you think will have to pay BiHBlll 1 eiedical biNsrid tl I ict RADIO ROUNDABOUT Folks working in Maitland's Clear Channel compound are finding themselves a little nervous nowadays the ones who are left, anyway. Last week, workers learned that 740 The Team gave the ax to the sports station's patriarch, Marc Daniels, as well as his partner on the mike, Steve Egan. And Doc and Johnny are down two producers on 106.7 FM.

Station officials haven't said much, leaving folks worried about everything from more cuts to format changes on the family of stations that also includes 100.3, 101.1, 104.1 and 107.7 on the FM dial, as well as 540 on the AM side. And from what I hear, they have reason to worry because the changes aren't over. In other radio news, Smooth Jazz 1 03. 1 FM (WLOQ) says it completed "an exhaustive nationwide search" for a new co-host for its morning show and settled on one of the station's very own former talents. Robyn Austin, who left the station three years ago, will join Marc Taylor in the morning starting Monday, while Eileen Foster is moving to North Carolina.
