Foreman, Holmes plan Birthday Bash George Foreman has his 50th birthday party planned: It will be at the Houston Astrodome, Larry Holmes is invited and there's going to be a fight. The two heavyweight champions of yesteryear both grandfathers met at the Dome on Monday to announce their Jan. 23 bout, billed as the "Birthday Bash." Foreman, fighting in his hometown, hits 50 on Jan. 10. Holmes turns 49 on Nov.

3. "Usually, the doctors check a fighter's heart, but with Larry and me, they're just going to see if we have a pulse," Foreman said. It will be the first fight in the Astrodome since November 1982 when Holmes defeated Randall "Tex" Cobb in a one-sided bout that disgusted the late sportscaster Howard Cosell the last pro fight he called. Holmes (66-6) expects a better fight this time. "This will be a classic, it's history," he said.

"It's two men who over the decades, never fought. Two men with lots of pride. Two men will give it all and only one will win. I'm sure that it will be me and George thinks it will be him." Foreman (76-5) ended 10 years of retirement in 1987 and became the WBA champion Nov. 5, 1994 with a lOth-round knockout of Michael Moorer.

Foreman was champion in 1973-74 before he lost his title to Muhammad Ali Oct. 30, 1974. Holmes' championship career lasted from 1978-1985. CART announces 1999 race schedule Next year's CART FedEx Championship Series includes a new event in Chicago as part of a considerably revamped 20-race schedule. The race at Chicago Motor Speedway, being built on the site of Sportsman's Park, a longtime thoroughbred racing facility in suburban Cicero, 111., will be held Aug.

22. Adding that race, as well as other considerations, necessitated some other changes in the schedule made public Monday. "With up to 12 races on ABC, we have worked to maximize the number of network broadcasts," said Keith Alio, vice president of broadcast services for CART. "Twelve races on network will represent a record number for the series. "There is not a weekend without a full slate of major sports attractions and, in constructing our 1999 schedule, we have looked for every opportunity to minimize conflicts.

As a consequence, a number of races move to new dates for 1999." Club manufacturers question test Some of the heaviest hitters in the golf equipment industry insist there is no need for a new test that could render illegal the next generation of clubs. At a public forum on a test to measure the springlike effect in new drivers, club manufacturers said their products designed by rocket scientists using complex computer models have not altered the game. They said the test, which the United States Golf Association proposed two months ago, was technically flawed and would stifle innovation. And they left little doubt that unless the USGA withdraws the proposal, it could face a lawsuit that challenges its authority to make rules in this country. "Why try to fix something that is not broken," said John A.

Solheim, president of Karsten Manufacturing maker of Ping golf clubs. "Innovation is one of the important traditions of golf." Jordan testifies in movie lawsuit A composed and soft-spoken Michael Jordan took the witness stand in Chicago for nearly four hours and testified that he never refused to act in a 1991 basketball film that flopped without him. "I maintained enthusiasm about the project. I wanted to participate," Jordan said, even when filming of "Heaven is a Playground" was postponed several times while the producers sought financing. Jordan said he even agreed to return the $50,000 producers paid him up front and offered his signature to help draw prospective backers when financing hit a snag.

The appearance by the Chicago Bulls superstar came in the midst of a multimillion-dollar breach-of-contract lawsuit alleging he reneged on a deal to star in the movie, which ultimately was made with former Loyola Marymount player Bo Kimble in the role Jordan was to have played. The film made just $168,000 at the box office, its producers allege, and never got national distribution. The producers are seeking between $16 million and $20 million in damages, or what they believe could have been the film's profit. For days Jordan has sat quietly at the defense table while lawyers did the talking. Then, Jordan wearing a gray suit, red-striped tie and silver hooped earring in his left ear took his accustomed starring role and loped across the downtown courtroom to the witness box.

Jordan was called by the plaintiffs as a hostile witness, and much of his testimony involved dry minutiae about contractual obligations. But he provided comic relief as the plaintiffs showed scenes from a video featuring film clips of Jordan's soaring basketball feats. Richie Adams, a former UNLV basketball star, was convicted of manslaughter in the 1996 beating death of a 15-year-old girl. A New York jury deliberated for nearly four days before finding the 35-year-old Adams guilty of a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter in the beating death of Norma Rodriguez. The high school student was found Oct.

15, 1996 in the hallway of a housing project in the Bronx where both she and Adams had lived.
