THE CLARKSDALE PRESS REGISTER PSC 2 A Saturday Morning, May 26, 1990 FLE scores above state average for juniors at Aggie I 2 companies, and on the existing -services utilities provide. Petition the PSC to condut hearings into rates or services of public utilities. The PSC has 30 days to respond on what actions it has taken or will be taking on the petition. Analyze proposals by a utility to abandon service to an area, usually railroads. Study utilities' compliance, with regulatory laws.

The PSC retains enforcement authority. Investigate contracts of public utilities with affiliates or subsidiaries, and advise the PSC on regulations and transactions. Much of the law takes effect July Sections dealing with the publOutilities staff take effect Sept. 1. "I think, certainly, the Independency of the new staff is probably a step in the right direction," Cochran said.

"I have advocated the possible need for an independent staff." Cochran said once the staff is at work, the PSC may come with recommendations to "fine tune" the law at a later date. "I think the new staff will work well with the commission in enhancing the regulatory process," he said. "I don't see that there are going to be any problems with the commissioners in working with the new Coahoma Agricultural High School (CAHS) received good news this week from the Mississippi Basic Skills Assessment Program. CAHS scored 100 percent on the Functional Literacy Exam (FLE) given each year to high school juniors. The perfect score means that all CAHS juniors passed the test, but more importantly, they passed with flying colors.

The three divisions of the FLE exam include reading, mathematics, and written communication. The state mean score, or the average score of all students taking the exam statewide, is 811.8, but CAHS' district scored an overall mean of 834.9, some 20-plus points higher than the state average. These latest results, coupled with the information that CAHS' ACT scores are high or at least well within the state average, and the fact that CAHS has improved its dropout rate have helped the school remain off probation. "Our teachers are hardworking. They deserve all the credit," said S.T.

Bailey, CAHS principal. "We are a viable institution in the community; we always have been, but now statewide test scores prove it." CAHS did exceptionally well in the mathematics and written communication areas, scoring in the 94 percentile and higher. Here is the breakdown of each testing area in the three major divisions and scoring percentages: Mathematics complete a check and its stub, 98.4; calculate take-home pay with hourly, weekly, or monthly wage and deduction, 99.6; calculate selling price with list price, sales, tax rate, andor rate discount, 96.6; calculate monthly payments over a period of time when given total cost, 96.8; calculate checking account balance given deposits, withdrawals, and service charges, 94.8; compute cost based on fractionpercent of expense, from weeklymonthly income, 96.4; use estimation of time, money, distance, weight, or capacity, 94.4; measure time, temperature, distance, capacity, or weight, 96. The change affects about 40 workers. It is the same device used when economic development programs were consolidated over a year ago. Many people lost jobs in that process, which some lawmakers later questioned. As in the past, the run will begin and end at the No6ser-Ellis Pavilion on Friars Point Road. But runners won't head toward Lee Drive this time; instead, they'll trek downtown and to the shaded banks of the Sunflower River. The entrants will then head toward the Duck Walk after the river trail, and wend their way back to the pavillion on Oakhurst Avenue. Runners will grab a refreshing drink halfway through the course, and splits will be available at the mile marks.

At the finish, participants will enjoy refreshments and fruit. Clarksdale Beverages is backing the race this year, and providing Mountain Valley spring water, T-shirts, and goody bags. Sheriff Andrew Thompson and the Sheriff's Department will direct traffic on the route and provide an escort for runners. The race kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, and registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

The entry fee for prepaid runners is $8, and $10 on the day of the race. A T-shirt is included with the fees. The Fun Run entry fee is $2. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in the race; and male and female age group winners. Awards will also be presented to age group winners of the Fun Run, which will begin as soon as the main race is finished.

Entry forms for the races are available at the Chamber of Commerce. For more information, call 627-7337. Trivial Pursuit tournament Members of the cooking team "The Best Little Chicken House in Clarksdale" have added yet another event to their agenda for the Delta Jubilee. Friday night, a Trivial Pursuit tournament will be held on the grounds near their rig, according to team member John Mayo. The entry fee is $10 per team, and teams can consist of two to three members.

Registration will begin at 7:30 p.m., and play will start at 8. Teams will play one-hour rounds, and the team ahead by the hour's finish will advance to the next round of play. The two teams who make it to the championship round will play until the Trivial Pursuit game is completed. A trophy will be presented to the tournament winners, Mayo said. Funds from the game will benefit the Pat Balducci medical fund.

Teams participating are asked to bring their own board games, if they have them, Mayo added. Robert C. Cauthen has been named plant manager of the Stephens-Adamson Clarksdale plant. He replaces Dudley D. Fedric, who retired March 31 after 28 years as plant manager.

Cauthen, a Clarksdale native, joined the plant staff in 1974 as manager of plant accounting. In 1977, he was assigned the additional duty of manager of production and inventory control.
