But the number of persons who rely on or even study Japanese in Hawaii, while sizable, is dwindling. Twenty-five percent of all undergraduates studying Japanese in the United States are doing so at the University of Hawaii, where they number around 1,500.

There are about 6,500 public school students studying Japanese down from a 1977 high of 8,000. At one time, in 1934, more than 'Students were attending Japanese-language schools in Hawaii, but the number is under 5,000 today; and some predict that most of the 58 schools will be gone in 20 years. Schaller said he had been told that 55,000 of Hawaii's residents are fluent'ln Japanese, but the the number is' steadily declining. Niyekawa said "the change will make" the station more like the others; and I wonder if they are going to gain a great deal." Hochi translator Kuraishi said he thinks "the station will lose viewers as a' result of this, but the Japanese community now is mostly English-speaking, so in the long run maybe it's good for the station." Schaller said that commercial considerations played an important role in the decision, but added: "If it were just dollars and cents, we would have done better to show movies all day long and drop the Japanese programming; we decided not to do that." KIKU is owned in three major chunks half by the Cushman family 6f San Diego; 30 per cent by local hui headed by Sam Okinaga, chairman of the board of State Savings and Loan Association; and 20 per cent by TV Asahi, a Japanese network. Tnese owners purchased the station in 1979 from Richard Eaton, a Mainjand owner of several television properties who had run KIKU as limited-day Japanese-language station for several years.

Okinaga said at the time that the new owners "are not. going to move away from Japanese programming." Andrew Lind, emeritus professor of sociology at the UH, said KIKU's schedule change appears to be "in line with the sort of the thing happening all over the country. "Foreign-language newspapers are tending to phase out entirely or shift over to English," he said. "In the case of the Japanese here in Hawaii, where there hasn't been the large amount of immigration in recent years, it's to be expected. "We are becoming more and more like the Mainland unfortunately, in some ways but I don't think that, the elements of the various culture are going to be eliminated soon.

PAMPERS TODDLERS 48'S MEN'S WEAR ill SUNOBIfS One of KIKU's best-known heroes of yesteryear: Kikaider. "There has been a revival of the consciousness of ethnic identity in Hawaii." KIKU had one of its most dramatic impacts on Hawaii when it showed Japanese superhero programs a few years ago. Niyekawa remembers that "many pediatricians expressed concern because a lot of kids were jumping from high places in imitation of their heroes. That was the negative side but the positive side, and one which showed the impact of television, was that "so many small Caucasian children were shouting Japanese phrases when they jumped." With KIKU's new cartoon schedule, it looks like most of the jumping now will be done in English. Neck paii is usually caused by a misalignment of the neck bones that pinch or press on spinal nerves as they pass between these bones on their way to the head or hands. Our spinal adjustments are designed to reduce nerve pinching and restore normal neck alignment to where nature intended. This can make that pain in the neck a thing of the past.
