Volunteers including Garret LaGrange, 5, of Orlando (above, left), Lee Sharpe of Orlando (left), and John Schultz of Altamonte Springs and Linda Pietarila (above, right) of Orlando pack vegetables at Orlando Lutheran Academy last weekend. The Society of St. Andrew brought mounds of potatoes, cucumbers, cabbage and onions to be packed and distributed to local food banks. The food was not marketable because it was too big or too small. Volunteers from 20 Lutheran churches in Seminole and Orange counties participated.

OVIEDO City OKs for fire station The City Council on Monday said it will pay to M.W. Mitchell Construction Development to build a fire station and fire administration headquarters. The fire station will replace the temporary mobile-home firehouse on West County Road 419 and provide office space for fire administration and inspection staff who are housed in a modular building at the City Hall complex on Alexandria Boulevard. The fire station and administration building will contain: About 3,450 square feet of bays for up to three fire-rescue vehicles. Living quarters for as many as seven firefighters (about 3,700 square feet).

About 6,000 square feet of office space for the Fire Department administrative staff, battalion chiefs, training officer and fire inspectors. LAKE MARY Commission says to fire fees The City Commission informally decided at a work session Tuesday not to pursue fire fees this year, City Manager John Litton said. The commission also decided it will start charging for a popular splash park that recently opened but not an adjoining playground. Like other cities, Lake Mary has been considering fees to help deal with property-tax reform. Fire fees, however, have been especially controversial.

Casselberry recently voted against them, and in Winter Springs they have passed on a 3-2 vote. Sandra Pedicini of the Sentinel staff compiled this report. SEMINOLE COUNTY GOVERNMENT WATCH County leaders will meet twice about budget It has been said that nothing in life worth anything is free, but try telling that to a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Or the people they rescue. An auxiliary of the Air Force, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) maintains 56,000 unpaid volunteers around the countrywho stop at the drop of a dime to save lives.

Many of those volunteers are found right here in Central Florida. Recently, Lt. Col. Mike Thompson revived the defunct Seminole Cadet Squadron, after the previous commanding officer was unexpectedly assigned to a post in Washington D.C. I assumed command in September, the squadron had only one active Thompson said.

The group meets weekly to go over training and safety issues, as well as to teach members the three goals of the CAP: emergency services, including search-and-rescue missions, aerospace education and cadet programs.
