Danville OL August t-SpeclaL In response to call previously made a large assemblage of people of Twlggs county gathering at the Danville academy to take some action in reference to the effort male in use Quarters of the state to secure the commutation of the sentence of Mr T. Elizabeth Nobles the murderess to life Imprisonment. Hon. I.

N. Maxwell was elected chairman of the meeting and Joseph C. Johnson secretary. D. M.

Hughes 8 W. YOS' A. Coornbs P. S. Lee and W.

R. Haynes were appointed a committee to direct and present resolutions for the consideration of the meeting. The committee made the following report which was unanimously adopted by a rising vote Whereas Mr. William Nobles the murdered husband of the confessed murderess. Elizabeth Nobles.

was a. citizen of out' count loved and honored for his piety amiability and uprightness. Whereas Jt has come' to our knowledge that a concerted effort is being made in various parts of the state to- procure a commutation of the sentence of Mrs. Nobles recently sentenced to the death penalty for the murder or her husband William Nobles and Whereas this effort is being made by persons remote from this vicinity unacquainted with the horrid details of the crime and as we have reasons to believe it is superinduced by a mawkish sentiment rather than a desire to promote. the ends of justice and Whereas being residents of the vicinity and some of us having been witnesses of the confession of Mrs.

Nobles we have actual knowledge not only of the crime Itself which constituted one of the foulest plots on the fair name and proud' escutcheon of our state but of the' facts and circum stances leading up to the commission thereof proving most conclusively not only the total and absolute depravity of- the murderers but. that she was the arch conspirator and chief participant in said crime. and that others concerned were only her servant tools and Whereas saI murderess has been granted the lawful trial guaranteed by our constitution has had the. service of able counsel and has been duly convicted and sentenced to death toefore a learned and upright judge and a fair add impartial jury. and there can be not the slightest doubt of her guilt or of the absence of all extenuating circumstances calling for the slightest mercy and Whereas pubic sentiment is such in this county and Vicinity that if executive clemency Is granted under such circumstances it would be difficult in the future to prevent' red-handed murderers and violators of our laws from being arraigned before Judge Lynch from whose decision there is no ap peal.

Therefore We residents of Twiggs county and vicinity in mass convention assembled in view of the facts set forth in the foregoing preamble which give us the most concern as peaceable and law-abiding citizen of this great commonwealth do most solemnly sincerely and earnestly protest against the extension in any form or executive clemency for this murderess poj- luted with the lire blood or her huaban land do hereby declare our perfect confidence in our chief magistrate and our belief that he will npt be. swerved from the perforr4- ance of his. sworn duty by a. desire to cater to weak' sentlmentallsm or transient public feeling unless inspired by a desire for- equal justice and the sacred execution of our laws It was unanimously resolved that a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to the governor. At last the deadlock over the election of a suc cessor to County Commissioner Clayton has been broken. For many weeks the four members of the board have been divided two and two. Two were for Mr. G. B.

Holder and two were for Mr. S. Funkhouser or some otler good citizen of Rome. All of the present commissioners live outside' of the eityi and the grand Jury recommended that' a town man be given the place. Yesterday however.

Mr. Holder received three votes and was declared elected. Commissioner P. Glenn one of Floyd's oldest and most highly respected citizens did not like the action of the board and' has resigned his position. It was not that he so opposed Mr.

Holder but he thought it unjust not to elect a town man. The board gave out- the county printing yesterday but failed to accept any one of the bids. They wanted to give a. part to each of the three papers bidding and made each an offer of less than half its bid. The total amounts to twice' the lowest bid made.

A Piece of Sharp Practice. One of the shrewdest pieces 5 law practice that ever occurred in north Georgia Is reported as happening sane time ago up near Crawford Springs. There was a negro there who became obstreperous and was guilty of some mldmeanor whlchnecessi- tated a course of correction. The farmer who was the aggrieved party secured the services of a neighbor. and they took the old negro down and buckled him acrers a logandgave him a good dressing dovn The negro reported the.

matter to the grand jury of Catoosa county and a true ill was found. The negro was very specific in his description of the place. and before the trial counsel for the defense Induced him. to go and show the exact tog where he received his punishment He rad so when lo and behold the log wasln Walker county. This not pressed The case In Catoosa and it was dropped.

The. defendants had picked up the log and carried it a. few steps across the line. Peaches at Plalnrille. Just above Rome on the Southern Is the little town' Plalnville.

Heretofore it has borne the- humble reputation of a country' village in the midst' of fertile farming country. But the present season' is changing all that and it is looming up into prom' inence as a shipping point for peaches. Four. or five years ago Miller Son planted extensiveorchards there- and now they are shipping carload after carload to Cincinnati Chicago and other points. The TOP is simply enormous and the peaches of the finest appearance and flavor and" Platnvine peaches command a good price in the market.

Working on the Water. There is talk of endeavoring to restore the Rome water supply to its former clear' ess and. purity Her water supply tiaed to be the pride and the boast of Rome. It came from a vein of pure crystalline water tich was Zapped bra abaftand was ample in ca parity. When the system was enlarged an attempt was made to enlargethe flow-end in borirur and blasting they went below this vein and struck a seam that letin the water of the Etowah river.

Slneejthat th rater ha been flat and discolored. Alt attempt has bean talked of to plug the objectionable stream below the clear water stream and retsore the supply to its former purity This is a thing-if it be possible thatis to be very much desired as the present supply un- fatei dJs hardly drinkable. The chairman made a few remarks on this stating that the meeting was not in a position then to adopt the resolutions.
