(AP) Former state Auditor Pete Johnson has been appointed director of the Farmers Home Administration in Mississippi, the state's two senators announced Wednesday. Sens. Thad Cochran and Trent Lott, both said the White House notified them Wednesday that Johnson had been officially appointed head of the USDA agency that employs about 530 people statewide.

The FHA administers loans of over $2 billion for about 65,000 borrowers. The agency annually loans about $250 million in Mississippi to farmers, and for rural housing, water and sewer systems, and economic and industrial development projects. Prior to serving as state auditor from 1988 to 1992, Johnson was employed by a Clarksdale bank and had extensive experience in that capacity involving farm loans in the Mississippi Delta.
