placing reliance inour figures. These exchanges stated he crop would fall be low our figures. Their estimates were made from the appearance of the crop In their immediate county Our figures were made from constantly reading-reports from several cotton exchanges from reading the best nef upapers in all the cotton states and from reports from the state and national agricultural bu reaus. This department has no axe to grind is not connected with any zing has no cause to bull or beat but on all matters pertaining to agriculture and its in. terest endeavors to give reliable information.

At this time the National cotton ex change puts the crop at 5077000 bales. The agricultural bureau puts it at 4,694000 bales while the general opinion at New Orleans allows it to go up to 5,250.000 bales. It is safe to say our figures made some time ago of 510001000 is the outcome of 1879. Now farmer this crop will bring to the southern states an income of 250000000. You have contributed the cotton a commodity that enters largely into the daily wants of nil the civilized world from the king on his throne to the be rar in his rags.

You in return have received over two hundred and a half millions of dollars. Where is your share of it Is it gone to raise a lien paid out in extravagant prices for fertilizers labor mules flour bacon etc. or have you by economy and good judgment. after paying your debts added some comforts to your house adorned and beautified your home laid by some of-it for a rainy day. BOOK KARMIVO We have before us a letter from a farmer ridiculing agricultural books and papers and the idea of science a ap plied to his business.

We learn thanhe writer makes some money by farrainz and we learn more that his land is being worn to the bone his stock run down laistoolsand utensijsbecominj worthless hjs family illy provided with comforts aid that ltia money has been made by extra hard work. He should learn that science is in volved in the operations of agriculture. That no employment known to rnanlind or fnvolves so wide a range of scientific principles. From books anti papers a farmer should learn of soils drainage and fertilization as shown by chemistry and by experience. The nature and cul tivation of various crops the breeding feeding care and cure of domestic animals.

The principles of vegetable lift- and the entire economy of crops of the various sorts. And not only the above hut the tinner should also learn something of veterinary science in regard to the diseases and cure of his domestic animals. xuz tUBCLLIO About the time the blossom falls the cnrculio begins its work. The stone Is soft easily pierced and this ruins the fruit ultimately. Growth is checked then it shrivels then drops to the eatth.

If there is a certain and sure remedy we are not acquainted with it. The fallen frnit should be gathered daily and destroyed and once a day the orchard should gone over and the insects jarred from the tree on a sheet and de stroyed. This sheet should be large enough to cover the ground under the tree with a slit from the middle to the evntre. The sudden jar alarms the in sect and causes it to fall. The remedies such as sveetened water dusting the trees had smells from burning tar etc.

have all been tried and failed. ilCXiS lYe frequently receive letters asking abont the diseases of hogs and desiring rethedie6. Our advice- to farmers is to try and keep off disease. Keep hogs in dean good fields give them access to good water. In the driest part of the field provide good shelter both from sun and rain.

In troughs near their resting places two or three times each week place a composition salt soda red pep per and ginger. To four parts of the firs two articles add one part of the latter. Common red pepper will answer well pulverized and all the ingredients thor oughly mixed. This is no remedy but a preventive of the injurious tflects of the foul gases and the pestiferous filth in which hogs have been allowed to wallow. MANURING.

Soils are enriched by plowing under plants that grow upon it. Plants which grow most rapidly and which produce the largest amount of stalks and loliage in the shortest time at the least expense 1 for seed and labr are the most valuable II forthepurposeof green manuring. Plants I that grow quite high are not desirable ones to raise for the purpose of plowing under as it is difficult to cover them. It vegetation is covered very deep it will rot slowly and be of comparatively little value to the next crop planted on the land. A crop raised fur the purpose of being plowed under benefits the soil in other ways than by enriching it.

It keeps it shaded during the hottest portion of the year and shade acts increase ICI tility. It also keeps weeds in cheek and so insures not only a. rich soil but one comparatively free from noxious vegeta lion. Soil if rightly managed may be male the means of adding to its own ler- tility. Left to the operations of nature soils do improve but their productions may be increased much faster by the in expensive means pointed out as above.

rABM NOTES. It is just thirty years since the first Jerseys were brought to this country. Of all the products of the soil none are so prolific mseedsas weeds 60000 seeds have been counted upon one mul- len stalk. Saturating ashes with kerosene and applying a handful In a hill. will keep tne striped bugs from cucumbers.

Horses have been known to go blind standing in dark stables. The stables should be so lighted that the light will not fall directly on the horses eyes. The.

windows should be at the fear of the stalls. Horses have been killed by watering them alter a heavy feed of grain. The water washed the undigested food out of the stomach and into the intestines causing irritation inflammation and finally death. Horses should always be watered before being fed grain. Three hundred and seventeen heroes have records of 2:35 or better.

To prevent galled shoulders Bub the collars inside every few days with a little neatsfoot oil and when any dirt is found sticking like wax to the collar wash it off with warm soapsuds and then oil it also oil any chaffed spot on the shoulder of the horse as soon as discovered. The sawn remarks may be applied to the use of saddles or any part of the harness which happens to rail. The farmer knows or should know that he plows his land to pulverize the soil and thus enable the rootlets to search for food and the air and water to find its way through its pores. It mingles weeds and trash with the soil and hastens their decay. Plowing late in the fall exposes insects and eggs or larvae to the frosts.

It mellows tl soil makes it porous and augments the amount of air that will prepare vegetable animal and mineral matter and fit it for food for coming plants. Ammonia and nitric acid are generated in soils. They are of great value to vegetable life. They are the more abundant the more often the land is plowed. The better the farmer plows and pulverizes his land the larger are his crops.

A well pulverized and mellow soil that can be freely entered by air and roots will yield larger crops titan when a greater depth but less permeable soil exists. A deep soil is always able to yield larger crop than a shallow one other conditions being the same. We frequently receive letters asking for methods tor destroying insects that infest A number of remedies have been tried ami generally proven beneficial. One remedy is to spread a cloth under the tree to catch whatever may fall jarring the tree by striking it with a heavy piece of lumber padded at one end toprevent injury to the bark. lab Some have found it efficacious to smear bei the bark with tar molasses or printers ink or what is better wrapping cbth round the trunk and applying the tar to these instead ol the bark.

Others wash tie trunk and the large branches with soitsoap or strong soapsuds or lye or white wash with lime. timig the leaves with lime or with powdered helebore when the Jew is on has been mentioned as a remedy. Digging around the tree to expose the larvie to frost has been tried successfully. Late plowing by exposure to birds and frosts will assist to destroy insects in their nests. the Infected leaves containing the eggs of parasitic insects should be taken from tie tret a and burned.

The vapor of beuzine has been proposed as a remedy against insects destroying woodwork. A wash composed of one pound of flour of sulphur and a peck of quicklime mixed in a close vessel with a sufficient quantity of hot water to make it of the consistency of common whitewash has been used with advantage as a remedy against insects and mildew in fruit trees. Apply it when freshly made with a whitewash brush. BEE NOTES. Good honey is now so low priced that it does not pay to adulterate.

Eighty thousand persons are engaged in the apiary business in this country. Thirty-five millions of pounds is the estimated value of the honey product very year in this country. j. M. Hicks of Btt1e Ground Intl.

Ferns do not succeed in the hot. dry lose atmosphere of our living rooms in winter and the same is generally true of the less common foliage plants. Professor Sargent of Harvard col lege is to conduct an investigation into the forest area and the forest wealth of the United States for the tenth census. Pear blight has in several instances been arrested in affected trees by syring ing them with a solution of potash and it has proved a preventive when ap plied to the healthy trees.

There are about 60000 acres devoted vine culture in California. Few of our farmers who raise apples apply any fertilizers to their orchards. A German garilner has found by experience that black or green flies cat erpillars etc. are at once destroyed by syringing the plants affected by them with water in which the sterna of the to mnato plant have been well boiled. The liquor is applied when coidand not onlj kills the insects but leaves an odo- which prevents others from coming.

Ussop master of the Norwich grammar school Little more than two months have passed since my own personal experience of mental phenomena was strik ingly enlarged by toe occurrence with which time following narrative deals Yet already I tind that round original story there has gttii- reti a surprising accumulation ot the mythical element and that I myself ant in danger of becoming a hero of romance in more senses than one. As I object to be looked upon as a Lid of medium to whom supernatural visitations are vouchsafed. and on time other hand do not wish to be set down as a crazy dreamer whose disorganized nervous system renders him abnor mally liable to fantastic delusions I have yieldVd to the earnest request of some who have begged toe to make public the following paper. I ant told that there are those why busy themselves in collecting similar stories and if it be so it is better they huid hear the facts from me than after they have passed through other channels The narrative was written at the request of a friend not many days after tbe event when all the circumstances were fresh in my recollection. OM the lOb of October 18791 drove over from Norwich to Mannington ball to spend the night at Lord Orfrds Though I was in perfect health and high spiiits it is fair to state that for some weeks previously I had had a great deal to think stout some little anxiety.

I was nut however. conscious of anything ap roacbing weariness irritability or fag I arrived at 4 p.m. and was engaged in pleasant and animated conversation till it was time to dress fof dinner. We dined at seven our party numbered six persons.

Of these four at least had been great travelers. 1 myself was rather a listener. The talk was general and discursive and amused and interested me greatly. Not for a single urn ment did it turn upon the supernatural it was chiefly concerned with questions of art and the experiences of men who had seen a great deal of the world. and could describe intelligently what they had seen and com melt upon it suggestively.

I have very rarely been at a more pleasant party. After dinier we plaved a rubber. We left off as we gall and as two of the guts had some distance to drive we broke up at half- past ten. The main object of my going over to Maui ningtort was to examine and take notes a pun some very rare books in Lord Oxford' II brary which I had been anxiously wishing to get a sight of for some years but bat never been fortunate enough to meet with up to thistinie I asked leave to sit up for some hours and mate transcript. By eleven o'clock 1 was the only person down stain and I was very soon busily at work sod at sorbed in my occupation. The room in which I was writing a a large one with a huge fire place and a grand old chimney and it is needless to say that it is furnished with every comfort and lux ury. The library opens into this rosin and I bad to pass oat from where I was ait- ling into this library and get upon a chair to reach the volumes I wanted to examine.

Throwing myself back in nay chair I sat for suite secouda looking at the tirtwith a curious nmixtureof feeling and I remember wondeting whether inv friend would cents again and if he did whether he would hide the fire from me. Then first there stole up on we a dread arid a suspicion that I was beginning to lose my nerve.
