Another peculiarity of his cue was th fact that while he could not read write or spell he could count and make the mos intricate calculations in his head being a unable to wake a tUure with pen or pencil as was letters. Avery That gentleman and his clerks rushed oil to the open barrel and sure enough then were the two bodies doubled up and packei in with charcoal. The upper body was cV dently the corpse of a buy and was In frightful position being beut entirely double with the legs pressed firmly bac over the shoulders. The lower body war the corpse of a man and had been packed in without the slightest reference to grace of position. The corpses were white they emitted no bad odor whatever. and to all appearances were in a state of excellent preservation.

There was a symmetry and freshness and smoothness about them which plainly showed even to the most casual ob server that but a short tint had elapsed since the spade of the ghoul had done the work. The discovery of tbe bodies created a big sensation end throngs of people visited the store to gate on the ghastly specacle Mr. Avery being in the plow business felt certain that there must be some grand mistake about the bodies. He felt too that it was a gray subject demanding immediate investiga Uou by the police so he dispatched a note to Chief Anderson advising Iiir1i of what had happened land asking for an investiga tion. The chief of police at once repaired to his store-room and having examined the address upon the barrel concluded that the barrel and its con- rents must nave been intended for Mr.

Arch Avery the druggist and that a mistake in the initials had evidently been made by the sender. Mr. Arch Avery' was accordingly sent for. In a short time he appeared npon the scene and at once laid claim to the barrel and the bodies. The chief then gave him an order on B.

F. Avery A Sons for the resurreted freight which was gladly delivered to him npon payment of the ex press charges. The reporter dropped into the drug store of Mr. Avery to find out if possible what disposition had been made of the barreled stiffs and while he was received and treated with marked courtesy by the gentleman therein found re grets to state that the conversation was exceedingly pleasant bat remarkably unsatis factory. Not a whit disconcerted but fairly quivering with that hot anti exquisite sensation which is born of detective fever alone the reporter pushed his inquiries and learned from a perfectly reliable source that the bodies had been consigned to Mr.

Arch Avery for the Southern medical college. at this lnt and had been promptly turned over to the functionaries of that new instution. It seems that Mr. Avery has a brother in that institution and it Is thonght that the whole thing was worked through him for the benefit of the college. This is at least a clever surmise.

The authorities' hive a regular rock cracking machine driven by an engine The whole ff. lr was purchased by the city council of Rome at acost of 1000 and has been found to work most satisfactorily.

This machine will do ii much work in a day as thirty active and In- dustrinus binds and by its operations can keep ten dump carts continually moving. Mr. Stewart intends to try and get the city council Atlanta to authorize hiss to purchase a crusher and an engine. The whole arrangement he thinks can be bought for less than the cost of the one now in us' at Rome He is of the opinion that it will be a great saving to Atlanta to have one of these outfits. At present all of the broken rocks used for niacadsnuiziug the streets are furnished by Lands from the re corders court.

This kind of labor it is welt known quite uncertain ftVlhs force is regulated by the amount of crlnie committed within the jurisdiction of the re corders court. Mr. Stewart says that with a rock-crusher in successful operattita jo five miles ofstreets can be macadadizei in Atlanta every year. It only takes one mm to run the engine and two or three to keep the crusher supplied with material consequently the ex pence is very light. The main force of the hands front the recorders court would be kept busily employed distrihuting rocks as they are duni ed in piles from the carts I while a few of the hands would be retained at the machine for the purpose of keeping it supplied with material.

At present the system used for cracking rocks is very unsatisfactory. Constantly a number of hands are unemployed either at one end of the line or at the other. Mr Stewart intends at an early day to lay the whole matter before time city Council of At lanta and ask for an appropriation for the purchase of a rock crusher and an engine. He will present the system in a most favorable light and we will not be surprised if the council acts favorablynpoataa matter. Suddenly a sound was heard as of the rising of a mighty wind through the pines and then an unmistakably subterra- nean moan while the earth reeled with three unsteady rickening oscillations. Stricken with momentary alarm the sfrarlils of people in the parks ed and reeled likewise. Tie horses hitched to a hundred llying carriage ktopped and braced themselves in dumb affright. Restaurant tables rocked and spilled their liquids and men startup up from thttf chai St the Louvre with dread.

About four in the morning the Herald con re respondent was awakened by a premonitory commotion in the atmosphere so direful that before the head could leave the pubs ladies were already rushing through tits upper corridors of the hotel. A myriad gigantic shuttle seemed to be weaving ruin in the outer air.
