The first "Grease" is the most successful musical comedy ever in filmdom and was Paramount's top money-maker till "Raiders" bypassed it this month. "If you remember, there was in the original 'Grease' the end-of-the-school year carnival," says Carr. "Well, you heard about it first about my 'Grease 2' finale. The other day, movie-maker Allan "Grease" Carr was holding an audition at his Diamond Head home for Australian youth Grant Kenny in Carr's forthcoming film, "Follow the Sun," a story about an Aussie cham- pion swimmer, an American youth doing commercials, and a girl photographer, which Carr describes as "a young people's romance." Though it'll be days maybe weeks before Kenny knows if he'll get the nod, the principal casting has been launched in the Islands inasmuch as Hawaii is geographically half-way between Australia and Hollywood.

"Grant Kenny already was in the Islands, to take part in a Molokai-to-Oahu surf paddling contest, and it was easier for me to bring over director Simon Wincer to interview Grant." Lucas, Spielberg, and the Meadows-AUen couple don't live here. But Carr does sometimes when he's not shuttling between New York, Beverly Hills, London, and Australia. They are part of what has is becoming commonplace in show biz: Hollywood has expanded its swinging doors far, far west to the shores of Hawaii. Concepts are being fertilized here; deals are being made here: the figurative casting couch might be a sandy retreat on these Pacific shores. And Carr is typifying a growing breed of industry pioneers who are making the Islands a part of the Hollywood and New York process of formalizing and formulating movie deals.

"I have to be back in Hollywood," Carr said earlier this week, before hopping a plane back to the West Coast yesterday. "We start shooting 'Grease 2' on Nov. 9, and the picture's now in rehearsals."
