EDITORS IzI In a recent issue you published an interview on the subject cheap coal for the city of Atlarta in which the writer urges as a remedy the completion of the Georgia Western railroad. I have ri doubt that the completion of that roa would be of great benefit to tlanta eventually giving her another route to Chatta- tiouga but even with present lines there a remedy and coal could be put into A lanta much cheaper than the prices name its your article. Take for instance tl coal from Coal creek Tennessee. Th freight from Coal creek mines to Atlanta now and has beetI for some time 360 ton of 25 bushels 2000 pounds. Of th the Knoxville and Ohio partis fi234 cents the East Tennessee Virginia and Georgis tot total say 175 while you state road gets the balance 185 for a utile run.

The It. it 0. road is only 3 suites to the coal mines hut on account i grades they have to run 50 miles to get train of 18 or 20 cars into Knoxville. your road charged the same as the Easi Tennesse Virginia and Georgia your coa would immediately be reduced pet ion. One reason of Ihis is no doubt tha the cars have to be pulled back empty The coal rate to Rome all under control Eat Tennessee Virginia and Georgia 230 per ton takingoff62Kc.

leaving 167. fur 152 suites run. To Chattanooga thi coal rate is 150 per ton from Coal cree 00 cents of Which belongs to the R. i road and there is even a lower rate for lU car lots to manufacturers. Thus you se if your W.

ct. A. road rated at 1 ce per mile under the same arrangement as hattatso-ga the freight for coal Irons Co creek to Atlatiti would be only 250 an perhaps less. The W. A.

road can affort 10 carry coal for less than the Georgi Western as it has an immense other tratl hot likely to go to that road. The finisluin of the Cincinnati Southern will snake shorter run for coal thai Irons KnoxviL but even then cheap coal for Atlanta depend almost entirely on the action of IV. OKiorv or vHs QUAREL The quarrel Is saIdtsihave originated upon a Pullman car of which Ed. Howell was conductor. Upon the down trip the previous day Winiberly and Townsend Doardedthe cat at Coffeeville and secured berths.

They sat down upon a seat and placed their feet upon the cushions opposite. Mr. Howell told them politely that placing their feet upon the cushions was violative of the company's rules. Wimbefly became abusive to. Mr.

Howell. and borne sharp words Mr. Howell went out upon the platform and Wlmberlv followed and struck him in the face. Mindful of Isis position and duties Howell did not resent this attack and the matter ended for the time being. Bad blood had been aroused between the two men however and they prepartd for a future settlement.

SEEKING TUN AOORKSSOL Upon his arrival iii New Orleans Mr. Howell informed his brother Sell. Howell who was general passenger and ticket agent of the Piedmont Line. under Colonel W. J.

Houston of this city of what had haMiened. They aupear to have armed themselves and gone out to hunt for the aggressor. In he morning they saw hint near the St. harles hotel when it is alleged pistols were drawn but a rencontre prevented by iniberly taking refuge in the rotunda ar. Later on St about 6 p.

Wimberley drew his pistol and was then hot in the right ear making a rlesh wound te started to run he says and was shot the hird time hi the back oar the left hum- ar region giving him a probably morta wound. Wituberley says he did not shoot and that his pistol was taken from him jmeone claiming to be a friend. He was outtd wounded as described in the store No. S4 St.

Charles street. Townsend ran and was being fired upon by Ed. Howell when taken into custody the police. Ed. Howell was standing on Common street with a Trauter pistol in each hand and had emptied nine of the chambers.

was approached by Officer McUonough whom he commanded to Stand back. The officer did not obey and Howell fired twice at him without effect. Howell was then seized and disarmed. THE VICTIM SELL HOWELL when the first shots were fired staggered into a saloon near by and exclaimed Have mercy on me for Gods sake I am shot am killed. A gentleman went to his aid but was compelled to throw Howell down to prevent the latter from hurting him.

Howell got up and went out th back door and into a boot store where he fell dead behind the cools- ter. One report says that when Howell entered the store he was followed by a ma who shot him dead. Howell's remains were well cared for. Ed. Howell was placed in prison as was Townsend and Wituberly carried to th charity hospital where his third wound pronounced a mortal one.

None of th parties will make a statement concernin the unfortunate affair. tic. FRED. KING WOUNDED. Dr.

He went to Ball Lyons dr 3 store where his wound was dressed and pronounced serious though nut dangerous Time Democrat says Dr. King was afterwards removed to the charity hospital for trea ument. Property valued at over 4000000 was destroyed by the recent tires in New Yorl These disasters recall public attention to th receptacles intended to protect books deeds securities and valuables that cannot be insured by the underwriters. The growing tendency among some manufacturers to cheapen their already inferior production- seeking to make up for deficiencies by th plausibility of their agents makes it a ma ter of increased importance that care should be excercised in the selection of a safe. At the earnest solicitation of the Sunday schools of time city this eminent Sundat school evangelistj ha consented to remai in the city over time Sabbath and will at dress the Sunday-school institute at th Second Baptist church to-night. It is un derstood that there will be a grand chi drens meeting to hear Mr.

Jacobs on Sun day afternoon due notice of which will ai pear in Sundays paper. Special to Ham Dealers and Consumers As there are many inferior and commo sweet-pickle hams being palmed ofFas gem nine sugar-cured we have thought best I warn dealers and consumers against theism position and at time same time call attet Lion to our famous MAGNOLIA HAMS regarding the excellence of which there us be no question. For sixteen years the have been subjected to-the severest tests i all climates and have attained the highet reputation wherever used. Like everythin of really superior quality they have stead ly and firmly grown in favor and now on warmest competitors sire almost ready to concede the superiority of whichthe genera public has long since been aware. From a cure of 7600 hams its 1863 the have annually increased and in 1878 th distribution of these hams amounted to 375000 pieces the largest cure ever made strictly winter sugar-cured canvased hams.

Even this unprecedented number was no equal to the demand. We cure under what we con thebes formula known and with the purest an most expensive ingredients. No expense i spared in handling and everything is don known to the ham-curare' art to rends them absolutely perfect They are cut in the interest of the consumer avoiding ai waste cured uniformly and are just as repressnted the perfection of sugar-cure hams. That there may be no doubt as to their quality we with entire confidence guarantee theta to be unsurpassed in ca cure delicacy of flavor and style of packagi byanyhamsirithewortd We believe them without equal and the universal favor wit which they have been accepted would just fy this conclusion. There is no economy to either the dealer or consumer in using th cheaply cured imitations when at a shad higher price the MAQSOLIA can be oh lathed.

We do not pretend to compete in pric with the poor grades that with sound lug names and flaming labels are being pressed on Southern buyers for we canno furnish a choice article at the price cheaply and carelessly curedmeats him My to all who appreciate a real delicacy that quality considered even at a consider ably higher figure Moisiiii are actually the cheapest. The dealer who sells Maguc lias will find them more ready salXTbe consumer is compensated in' the excellent sit flavor. Dealerscan order them dice fjvnx us through Fears Jones. Atlanta.
