in- 1819 was admitted to the bar in 1821. During his long and fruitful life he held many positions or nonor in ueorgia. in tent he joined the Baptist church in Eatontou and was baptized by Rev. Jesse Mercer. From that time until death he retained his connection with the Baptist denomination.

His Christian. charas- ter tenindreputation was never tainted even by suspicion. lie ever contemned everything mean and low never siooped to a subterfuge in his life and always moved on the plane-of high and generous motives. The news of his death will recall historic memories to thousands of Georgians. Major Csoper was elected solicitor general of the Ocnsulgee circuit subsequently ran for the judgeship unsuccessfully served one term in congress and was elected a second time but before he entered on his term he was nominated by the democratic party of Georgia as their candidate for governor.

He resigned his seat in congress to accept the. nomination. lie was defeated by George W. Crawford a schoolmate of his and a party associate at all times prior to this. lit 1836 he served in the war sgainst the EeminoleIndians in Florida as a Georgia volunteer.

While representing rntnsm county in tile Georgia legislature he aided greatly in pushing the Georgia railroad to completion. lie built with his own means a branch railroad from the Slate road up the Etowah river to Etowali. He was mainly instrumental as president of the road in negotiating for the Van Wart now the East and West railroad of Alabama. While in Putnam county hewing converted all his means into cash he established a bank in with a capital stock of 250009. Having selected Bsrtow county as his homefor life he built up the Etowah.
