YORK April 19. The port movement today was again larger than expected beng 65 bales atatnst OOIJ Lest year and 1502 so far this week ahead of the sam period lat year. After opening here steady at last nights prices. a considerable selling movement began which carried pries 4 points below last nights close but front this the market reacted closing cnly 1 point lower Ulan last night. We have so frequently reacted from toe lowest figures touched today on previous declines.

that It naturally creates timidity In trying to force the market lower until Liverpool begins to show greater decline. The decline there was 64 to 2 while spot sales were lOOuO bales of which 9000 were American. In this country as we said yesterday spots are stronger than futures. and jnst as the latter have been weaker so will they be stronger If ever the conditions are realized necessary to create a stronger buying demand. These conditions have developed spasmodically.

but have proved to be short-lived largely for reason that the weekly amount of cotton coming in sight has been larger than expected. instead of showing a loss as compared with last year as has been promised for some time past. The general sentiment is bearish. and with an absence of necuiation combined with the timidity of the bulls It has been easier to put the market lower than the reverse. There are many strong people who are tong of cotton.

and who cling to their be. lief That something better is in store for the market. Our expectation of better prices are based upon our belief that there will be no increased acreage for the coming crop outside of Texas but If these impressions do not prove to be carried ox ar on the contrary there should be a considerable interest in the area. then. as we have frequently said there will be little or nothing to support prices.

We cannot endorse. at this moment. the views of those who are advocating lower prices because It seems dangerous to be short of the market when there are conditions which might he developed and which. It realized would put prices up very sharply. The ad. vices from Liverpool this morning were better than were anticipated by the trade. The early dispatches reported a decline of but 1 with sales of 10000 bales. The close of the market however was barely stady at 2 points under yesterdays prices and our market seems to have relapsed into a condition of stagnation due to the absence of any outside speculation whit the holders of cotton are waiting for the spinners to take their holdings from then at either present prices or such prices as they may be willing to pay" Unless nuted some accident to the crop may nave the effect of compelling the consumer to pay a handsome price. In short the market is In the Ideal position which will ecur pro vided the bin proposed by Mr.

Hatch be. cornea a law. as there Is but one buyer at the moment and that is the spinner in place of the two buyers that usually appear in all the markets. namely the spinner and the speculator. As natural in the vhsctc buying- orders and the increase the movement of the crop this over last values slight ly declined from the lllotation current last evening and during the afternoon the market first Fteadled and then became firmer on the buying by a local operator to cover previous sates.

These purchases absorbed all the floating cotton and were sufficient to close the mHket steady within one point of last evening. Tine Suns Cotton Review. New York April Transactions are on a small scale and the fluctuations were within correspondingly narrow limits. The foreign news was bearish the crop movement was liberal trade was not brisk and the market closed at a small decline. This af ternoon there was less pressure to sell and some local operators bought.

The receipts at the interior towns were tight and the shipments pretty liberal. The spot markets at the south were a trifle more steady. There is nothing In the present situation to stimulate speculation and It Is in the main a waiting marketJ Rlordsn Co' Cotton Circular. NEW YORK. April 19.
