It Is safe to say that the sum total would exceed a half million. Despite this handsome exhibit of income our people are not happy.

The complaints of poor trade. stringent money and general depression are very frequently beam. The Question of most universal iuterest is as to the cause of this state of affairs. Various explanations are offered. The most satisfactory theory to my mind is briefly this The distressingly short cottos crop' last year left the farmer.

sadly behind with their factors. The abundant grain crop which followed was Ii godsend to the average planter supplying him as it did. with the real necessities or life but doing little toward canceling his pecuniary arearsges. This cotton crop therefore is going in the main to the liquidation of his debts. His condition is vBIdy improved through paying what he owes but this being done he finds himself with only a small balance ifany tiling to spend in general purchases.

sides this his barns are yet well stored with the harvests of teat summer which make his wants fewer. even he has money to spend. Hence the stagnation in trade and the naturally attendant general depression. A co- rent reason for tight money lies in this fact Our cotton receipts from September first to January first are somewhat smaller than they were for the corresponding period or wt year while the average price of toe staple between the same dates is nearly twenty per cent less. That is to say the money realized in Augusta from the sale of cotton to date this season is at least a rail.

lion of dollars less than was realized from the same source last season. This- is relatively true all over the state hence I am making BO confession of exceptional misfortune against our people. When discussing the' monetary condition of any time. one naturally considers simultaneously the men most conspicuously associated with financial interests. With every thought of Augusta's wealth.

three names are inseparably connected Hon. John P. King and Hon. John Davison rankjas the most prominent representatives of accumulated capital while between them in the unostentatious enjoyment of equal wealth stands that excellent sister of love tenderness and charity Mrs. Emily Tubman.

These three holders of great fortunes however have all turned the hill of life and can no longer be considered It actually engaged in the operations of the day. Their records are made. and they sit in restful peace through consciousness of past accomplishments. Probably the most prominent bank president is Mr. Alfred Baker.

He scores enviable success through the exercise of the coolest judgment and the strongest nerve. Mr. John A. North president of the Cm- mercW bank is now in hit present office though for many years he has been associated prominently with our banking interests. He Is generally regarded the most familiar man tupur community with the details of bank.

Jugand is an admitted. financier of rare ability. Colonel Charles H. Phinizy stands out in bold relief. the central figure of financial group.

He has much of lire ahead of him and for his years is probably the most conspicuous man of our city being now president of both those zoaramoth institutions- the Georgia railroad and the Augusta factory. CAMEO. A WAR STORY. I sl 1 ei St AB LeIleaI tral tear nail Tkraifk Psta cutJ Special to The Cont1tution. EATOXTOII January 13.

Thinking that the following incident of the late war will be interesting to your readers and also believing that all such incidents ought to be made known in order that a true understanding Of the real animus of all the parties to the war may be arrived at I give it to you. You will remember that while Johnston was holding Sherman in check at Atlanta Stoneman made a cavalry raid through this part of the state going so far as Macon where he and most of his command were captured. A number who escaped capture- in endeavoring to get back to Atlanta passed through this Putnam county. They were pursued by tome state troops and many were made prisoners. One afternoon when there were twenty or more ot these in the courthouse square in Eaton ton und guard and several citizens were conversing with them attention was directed to two unarmed federal soldiers walking before a negro with a gun in hit hand.

It was soon ascertained that the negro Anderson Roby a slave had round the soldiers on hit maters place pursued them with Ii shot-gun and forced them to surrender. The act was entirely voluntary on his part and I well remember what a look of triumph Ids countenance bore as he delivered up his prisoners. I also as distinctly remember what contempt and abuse was heaped upon these two luckless men by their fellow prisoners for allowing themselves to be captured by a negro. I need hardly remark that Anderson received many confederate dollars from the OitiRD3 present. I was then a boy of twelve years of age and the incident made a deep impression upon my mind.

As some may question the truth of what I relate. I refer you to Hon. Thoisas 0. Law- Esiunton. for proof of my reliability altojio Dr.

I. T. IeJannette of this aounty and Mr. fl. C.

From the Sandersvllle Ga. Herald. Ass Lawson the ro who for two decades has been a. fugitive from justice and by his flagrxnt and daring crimes has been held so an outlaw died on Tuesday 2d inst. from the shot received on the day of the riot at Oconee.

Among his first acts that are now remembered as a public offender was perpetrated Tennille. While in the baggage car during the war he adroitly managed to shove a trunk probably filled with supplies for some soldier out of the car at this station and leaping out sought to escape. He was however caught in the act the train was sig naled to stop pursuit was at once instituted and the rogue was captured. Ass doubtless resisted his pursuers. as he was so seriously stabbed and cut.

that for a long time his life was despaired of. The next time Ass comes to the front as a lawless miscreant was during the ever memorable march of General Sherman through this county. Here he acted as a treschrous informant against the whites directing the marauding parties in their scouts for pillage robbery and vandalism. He is charged with leading the party to the house of Mr. Gideon Strange a quiet and in offensive citizen of our county and himself shot Mr.

Strange aided in robbing his house and then applied the torch and gave it to the flames. Mr. Strange yet lives lamed by the loss of one arm from the shot of Ass Lawson. Other families' were visited by the ruthless soldiery under the lead of this graceless villain which knowing his lawless character were thrown into the greatest consternation and in some instances robbed. of stock and the scanty provisions necessary for their subsistence.

Following the army of Sherman. Ass faded fromsight until 1 77 official infor. niation was received here that he was in custody in St. Louis. Dr.

J. B. Roberta of this place was employed to bring him here which as many of our readers will remember was done and Ass Lawson was lodged in jail. In due time he was tried for arson convicted and sentenced by Judge Johnson to ten years imprisonment in the penitentiary. Ass how- ever cut out of jail made his escape and eluded arrest until his audacity led him to take part in the sanguinary riot that occurred at Oconee in this county on Christmas day.

He evidently was in the conspiracy on that day had armed himself with a large navy pistol and was seen stalking about before the riot began and when it was fairly opened. he rushed forwrd and emptied two carrels of this murderous weapon at the party which fortunately for the lives of those he sought missed their im. He was passing under the name of George Galloway and claimed to be from Dublin he ajso said that he Lad been employed as cook on the Culville the boat thatplitl between Oconee and Dublin. He has been seen at Tenuille also during the year and his daring character is evident front his being at Ocozee where. he once lived a slave.

As previously published when an attempt was made to arrest him during the slat he made his way off but was wounded so seriously a ball passing thoughhis body that he was captured and by the anxiety of his mother for him his identity was discovered. After lingering about eight days he died. and the outlaw who was long defrauded justice of its victim has by the han ls of a slow but terrible retribution paid the penalty of his awful crimes. A Peculiar Casualty. From the Perry Hume Journal.

Mr. William Tnarp who lives about eight miles northeast of Perry came into our office yesterday afternoon and told us of a peculiar casualty to himself. When he got out of bed yesterday morning he experienced a numb feeling about two of the fingers on the outside of rightJ1and. He won found that his arm was affected up to the elbow on the same side with the fingers. He did not suffer any pain but the fingers could not be moved by their own action.

The other fingers are as useful and full of reeling as ever. Mr. Tharp does not know tue cause of this Bumbne unless it is paralysis. A YIight billiards. From the Amerlcua Ua.

EDITORS CoRsrtrunoN Having occasion to enclose a large area of land In southwest Georgia for pasturage and being thus interestedlin thefbest and most economical plan of fencing I have been investigating the practical use of the barbed wire for fencing in this state. I received a few day since a loiter from Mr. William H.

ltllison. a gentleman of culture and aprac- cat and successful farmer of Harris county. Georgia who has had long experience with the barbed wire as a farm fence. From information obtained arid especially from that received from Mr. Ellison I have concluded to erect some miles of plantation barbed wire fencing.

His letter con'- talus in a condensed form so much practical information on a subject so important that I with to send hit letter for publication to a Journal so widely circulated among the influential farmers of Georgia and one that manifests to much Interest in the agricultural wellfar of our state and a press that it ever ready to resist any measure to oppress that labor upon which all our Industries depend. The only question not considered by Mr. Ellison is the cost of this wire. general cost a barbed wire fence To protect crops from all stock is mont fifty per cent more than a wire fence of a similar length but considering the great durability of the wire it may be considered by tar time cheapest fence The price of the barbed wire delivered in this Ute is about two hundred dollars a ton. A piles so excessive 1 caused in a great measure by the duty on iron and steel under our present unjust and oppressive protective tariff system.

when our representatives relieve us from this and similar burdens labor will be free and our country prosperous. Respectfully JO P. FooT. LLLtsOIl' LETTEB. SHILOH December 28th 1882.

Mr. Jno. P. Fort. Dear sir My experience with the barb wire 55 a crop fence for the purpose of utilizing pasture land for horses and cattle ill an outside fence around pasture land lone has been entirety Fatisfactory.

But It would be an ex pensive fence to be made perfectly secure as au outside fence for a crop. To your first question I answer Two wires will turn mules perfectly. Three wires will turn cattle perfectly. To your second question A wire fence will not turn hop without a plank at the bottom. The posjt for a fence to turn mules and cattle thonldbe-sixteenfeet apart and every tenth post shou1d be well braced with nags.

The posts for a fence to turn hogs should be not more than ten feet apart. as to prevent the hogs from springing toe wire. They have very little fear of the barb. Toe posts not lets than six feet long and will set in the ground two feet. Mules have a great dread of barbed wire.

I have now used it around pasture land for four years without Injury to my mules. I find two wires will turn my male Utter than a shaked rail fence or a plank fence. Last summer I had oats and corn In the same field. After lIarveatiog my oats I stretched one wire across the field between where I had corn and oats and upon the stubble land grazed my mules all summer. Cattle have lest dread of the barb and not less than three will turn them perfectly.
