Athens. Ga. February Whilethe eyes of the manufacturing world are turned upon Georgia in the south as year by year this section is marching to the front In manufacture It may not be amiss to note a few instances of svess enterprises started in thU part of' Georgia. Two years ao the Harmony Grove rotton mill startedoperation It. was organized by home capital and it has' betn operated by horn labor and home capital.

It is purely a product of this section of Georgia and although but two years old has just declared a dividend of IS per cent. So marked has been the success of this thriving manufactory that Hon. W. T. Thurmond of Harmony Grove ex sentative from Jackson county has started a movement to organize a operative company to erect and operate fully a large a plant as that oJ the present mill.

The Harmony Grove people are taking to the Idea and It is believed there will Vie no trouble In raising the necessary amount of stock. Harmony Grove has about 1200 inhabitants plenty or capital and is a splendid cotton market several thousand baits of the fleecy staple per annum. The Winder cotton mm is one of the enterprises that is to go up before the summer is over. The capital tock of this mill is J50IAK and amonsf its prominent Mookhohlprs" are Dr. Wiley Bush Hon.

Richard Russell. Mr. R. I. Caruthers Dr.

J. t. DHaperrirre and others. All the preliminaries of organization have I en pone through with and ail that re mains to he done If to eonsmot the mill. This will hp done befoe t' next cott season sets in.

The Klectrlc cotton mill for Athens wilj a ji 00 swindle mill and- Mayor McMahan is a prime movrr In the movement to establish it. It will erect i as soon as the electric power plant from Mitchell' bridge in this county is linished which Will be Inold of the next four. months. This will bethe first mill in Georgia to be run by etectrlcity and it is hoped and believed that It will he demonstrated that electricity is by long odds the cheapest and most satisfactory motive power to be in cott6n mill operations. It is known that a number of Pennsyl vania capitalists have had1 Tallese shoals ejfht milts from Athens examined by an expert with a view of rctln a large mill there.

Those have 1HC7 power easily handled. An enthusiastic cotton mill advocate of this section gives as reasons for the location of mills here First. that the climate is uh as to keep the operatives healthy and at the same time allow the mill to run the year round. Swond that th county taxes in Clarke and all the counties contiguous to Clarke are very low and far bolow the rates of many other manufacturing counties In Georgia. thf abundance of water power easily util ized supplies direct or through electrical development a cheaper motive power than coal can furnish almost at the mines.

Fourth that no section of Georgia furn ishes as excellent a prade of cotton or a Kreater abundance of it than northeast Georgia. The old established cotton mills Industries In this secton are doing well the new ones are doing admirably. as is evi denced bv the handsome dividend just declared by the Harmony Grove mill and quite a large number of industries are projected for the future. The best feature of the cottonmil move- ment In this section us regarded by the leading citizens Is the fad that thp de velopment is almost entirely with home capital. FIRE IN AUGUSTA.

Three days after the wreck Frank Mason died and soon after Max Thornton Alfred Stafford Joe West and Nathan Adams succumbed.

The survivors were too weak to throw the bodies overboard and they remained in the boat ghastly reminders of tf fate that awaited the living. For the last two' days Holmes says he was the only one of theliving men who retained consciousness and he does pot remember clearly whathappened Yesterday afterrtcon thet boat drifted ashore on Dog island and was discovered by two negroes. The scene In the boat was horrible. In a heap were eleven naked bodies and the' negroes thought all were dead. They soon discovered six were still living and pulled them away from the dead on which they had fallen in their weakness.

Moses I Green of Waynesboro is visiting relatives in Athens. A Poem Caused the Trouble. Athens Ga. February 13. Special.

The publication of a piece of poetry in the col lege paper The Red and Black waa the- cause of all the copies of that paper that went to Lucy Cobb institute Saturday be. ing destroyed. The poem was written after the style of On the Bowery only Lucy Cobha verandah and the famous goats were in serted in the place of the well-known New York street. The publication of. the poem was distasteful to the principal of Lucy Cobb in stitute and she wouldn't allow the young ladies to receive the papers sent to the institute by the college boys.

This state of affairs could not be allowed to exist long for if there is one place where the college boy wishes to send The Red and Black it is Lucy Cobb institute. The in of The Red and Black called on the principal and explained that In the hurry incident to getting out the paper he had not. noticed that the poem' might prove objectionable and that he re gretted the publication and would see that no such' was published again in The Red and Black. Thereupon the principal of Lucy Cobb institute allowed the paper to be sent to. the young ladies once more and the students were happy.
