December 31 Special Af about clock tonight Thomas Reynolds shot. and killed George Cox in this city. The killing occurred. near the house of Reynolds wife. from whom he had separated a short time since and from' the best of information seems to have been tile result of Cox a attention to Reynolds wife which Reynolds resented by shooting' Cox twice.

Cotton eeipts Off. The cotton receipts are about 38 per cent off at this market Up to' December 27th last year there had been 77429 bales received at Iorne against 45000 this year.

Todd has been stricken with partial paralysis and on account of hfa extreme age he. is not expected to live many' days He Is to his first year and his career is remarkable in the tact that he has never held but two positions in all his long life one.

as assayer in the United States mint at Dahlonega and the other as a conductor on the old Rome railroad. He was born to Carlisle Pa. In 1814. and received a liberal education becoming7 BO eiper In mineralogythat at' the age of twenty-three' years he was assigned to the responsible position of assayer of the mint' at Dalilonega. when.

it was first opened. there to ISIS. He retained that. position under the successive administrations of' Andrew Jackson Van Burn Harrison Tyler Polk. Taylor Rfflmor Pierce.

and Buchanan a term unprecedented to the life of an officer holding a similar position. For twenty-five years he superintended the Issuing of the golden- eagles during the period when the mint at Dahlonega was the largest to the union and Georgia led the states In the production Of gold up to the discoveries in California to 1849. A Speculation. When gold was discovered to California Captain Todd furnished quite a number of miners with outfits on speculation "staking" them as was termed they to give him half their earnings. Some of them carried out their contracts and others did' not but he managed to make a very good thing out of It.

When the. war broke out of course. operations at the mint were suspended and the gold mining business went town never to assume its former Importance again. Captain Todd had entered into-a partnership with a man named Baird In the commission business to Rome and he removed to this place when the. mint was closed to I860 His Second Job.

Captain Todd secured a position as conduct on the old Rome railroad when tHat was opened and he retained" that o- sltl for twenty years. until the Infirmities of age enforced Ills retirement irons active life. Since that time he has re sided here in retirement and Is one of the' most highly esteemed citizens of flours. has held- his own very well uptil recently but this last attack. UJs feared will carry the old gentleman- off though be Is resting easily today.

He has but two children both sons- A. Todd. a leading grocer and p. A. Todd rho Is one of the best farmers to the unty Captain Todd has many friends all over north Georgia who win regret td near of his Illness.

Two weeks ago The Cherokee Advance published an Interview with Mr. R. W. Walker who Is one of Cantons most conservative clQzens and one of north Georgia's cleverest mining experts. In which he was quoted as ten miles northwest of Canton ort the eastern slope of the Oaky mountain a large vein' of slate and quartz strata was recently discovered which Is fully five miles long and Is more than 100 yards wide by actual measurement.

Leaving the branch we went up. the mountain sMesfand at different places broke off pieces from numerous bowlders which we found to be of the same character of ore. The ore there is refractory and contains about 10 per cent of pyrites. whlen.

carries all of the gold. No free gold has been found on. this lead except a very small quantity but the gold. la all In the qyrttes or gulphurettes1 which require re- ductlon and concentration. An Entirely New Lead.

Mr. Walker says he has had about twenty-five assays of this' ore made which run from 1 to 1065. per ton averaging about 350 per ton. This lead Is I entirely new one no gold discoveries having been made heretofore In that section of the country so tar as your correspondent Is advised For many years the gold fields of Georgia and of the south. have been little worked.
