They are so shabby you wonder how the people ever get any glamour in the shows. This week, for example, they were rehearsing for the Patti Page show with Perry Como Gene Nelson. The stars and about 50 singers, dancers, actors and others were crammed in an ancient rehearsal hall on Eighth Ave.

The way things went, it looked as if they'd never get the show on the air. But they did. My target for that was Como. Perry the 'giant killer. Well, he hasn't really slain the giantJackie Gleason--but he has come, within a point or two of matching his audience rating.

all. I've had 25 years of singing; didn't want to toss it all down the drain by failing oppo site a big show. I figured I had a few good years left. "Besides, I didn't want to get, into a hassle. The thought of doing a weekly hour show frightened me.

I like to take it easy; I don't! want to work too hard." Como is working six days a week now, but he doesn't scem to mind it. He's happy with the Saturday night show's success. And despite their opposition on the nelworks, he and Gleason refuse to feud. Daring and Difficult Movie Entertainment ent Due at Sipe Today's moviegoing taste for the daring and the different in -screen entertainment is decidedly satislied by the Sipe Theater's new CinemaScope attraction, "The Left of God," which arrives Sunday. Rarely has there been a more offbeat and more intriguing story, lold with power and brilliance by a wonderful cast headed by Humphrey Bogart, Gene Tierney and Lec J.

Cobb. Mark this one down as a dramatic highlight of the year. Based on William E. Barrett's controversial best-seller, "The Left Hand of God" relates the story of a flyer-adventurer, played by Bogart, in China jr 1947, and his escape from a sinister Chinese warlord (Cobb) the guise of a Catholic priest. The complications ensue when Gene Tierney, a nurse at a Chinese misison where Bogart takes passling refuge, finds herself falling love with a man she believes to be a priest.

This forceful and delicate situation is handled with great tact and taste, and also with artistic skill and uncompromising candidness. Humphrey Bogart, no to Academy Awards since "'The African and a nomination for "'The Caine Mutiny," is clearly in line again for his portrayal, of the flyer-priest who: is called, upon to actually function in the latter role and does 50 with an inspiration that in turn leaves its mark on his own character. For Miss Tierney, the film is an unusual opportunity for a superior performance, and Cobb, of course, is his usual peerless self as the warlord. It's his best character assignment since. "On the Waterfront," and on a par with his great acting in the stage edition of "Death of This is a star trio to be matched in" year.

Additionally, "The Left Hand of God" provides noteworthy performances from. a handful ers, including Agnes E. G. Marshall, Jean Porter an Carl Benton Reid, Victor Yung, Philip Ahn Benson Fong. They weave excelcharacter parts into the tapestry of Barrett's story, to fill a gallery.
