MKKCEK BIO (Continued from" page 1.) which tho various events, would be judged, giving a few of the fundiu mental rules which had been agreed upon at the Teacher's Institute in. October, when the entire season was planned. The first speaking contest was two orations, one by Lukacs of Mercor, who gave. "What It Means to lie an American' Citizen," and the, ot her by Frederick Hunt, Greenville, on "Our Which Made Them Great." These were to lie judged equally for subject matter and presentation, and the judges decided in favoV of tho Mercer speaker, two to one. Bach the speakers showed a good choice of subject matter, and the delivery wag made In fine style In 'each case.

The Eighth grade students followe'd the oration with two music selections, 'Lift Thine Eyes," from and "The Night Has a Thousand Byes." The next number of tho program was tho declamation, participated In by Miss Margaret Morse of Mercer, who gave "Betty at tho Baseball Game," and Miss Martha Hesse, who recited Kipling's "Mandalay." Although each 01 these numbers differed considerably in form, Misa Martha Hesse was awarded the decision by tho judges unanimously. Another selection by the orchestra was followed by the debate on the proposition, That the Strike Is Not the Best Method of Settling Labor The disputants affirmative were John Lind'sey Miss Ruth for Mercer, and Miss Evelyn Evans and Glenn Reznor for Greenville, with Miss Frances Fitch as alternate. The debate was highly interesting, each team showing considerable preparation and choice, of material, together with an animated delivery that enlivened the entire program. The decision of the judges awarded cer the points, unanimously, thus giving the loeala ono point In the pro grain hero and Mercer five. The judges in the Greenville program were: Miss Edna Mathfiy, and Attorneys Leo McKay and "Wei- seti, all of Sharon.

MERCER PROGRAM At Mercer, a somewhat similar pro-, gram was carired out, witPl tho same proposition debated, Greenville having the'negative team and'Mercer the affirmative. Tho Grenvillo team was made up of Evelyn Hart and Lyle McDowell and Walter tffert alternate, and the Mercer representatives were Wendell McConnell and Allefl Broadbent. The decision of the judges awarded Mercor the 'debate, which gave Mercer 2 1-2 points of the possible -four at that place. The other events were essays nnd declamations by the 'respective representatives. Miss Lucille Harman was the Greenville essayist, and she had prepared ono on the "Ku KIux Klan." The judge awarded a two to one decision to the latter, giving Mercer another point.

Miss Mary Mason gave the Mercer and Charlos Keelen represented Greenville with tho, "Liberty and Union" speech of Webster, but' u- two to one decision gave the point to the former speaker, Combining the points made at Mercer and Greenville, received only one point and Mercer The Mercer program was finished off by song numbers of the high school antt 'quartet, much the same as the local program. The judges of the Mercer contest were Profs. Sharpe, Eberly and Wallace, all of the faculty of Westminster college ftt New Wilmington. The meeting of Friday evening was only the first of the series which are to be given throughout the yeaf. The exchange of teams of the different county towns and tho number of points made by each team are to be kept on record, and at the end of tho season number of prlxe awards are to be made.
