By Ginny Graybiel News Journal Hundreds of visitors to the National Museum of Naval Aviation turned their attention Tuesday from the wild blue yonder to the murky depths of a lake that claimed numerous World War II airplanes. The Underwater Recovery Exhibit featuring two unrestored airplanes in a simulated underwater environment was opened in conjunction with the museum's 30th anniversary. THE FIXED-WING F4-F Wildcat fighter and SBD Dauntless dive bomber were lost between 1942 and 1945 by pilots training off makeshift aircraft carriers on Lake Michigan.

They were among six planes recovered two years ago. The first visitors to walk through the exhibit said they actually had a peculiar sensation of being underwater. "It's very unusual," said William Attick of Daytona Beach. "The netting and the lighting and the way they have it set up, you think you're down under there." The battered airplanes, displayed on beds of sand and dirt, are in a dimly lit room draped in camouflage netting. Lights shine through water boxes in the ceiling to simulate the sun glimmering through the lake.

"The water and the rippling really create an underwater atmosphere," said Ira Patterson of Metairie, La. "It's amazing."
