Mr. Tlft also became satisfied that the present low rates of freight produced by an active rivalry between competing. linea will not permit a direct line between -Savannah and Liverpool to be run without loss to some party. The object of Ms mission being to inaugurate a direct regu.

larandyet economical intercourse with Europe he commenced negotiations for thrqugb bills of. lading and through rates Dffrdgntbe weeh Liverpool. an Savannah. In this he succeeded. The agreement with the White Star Line" one of We fastest and best weekly lines between New York and Liverpool and with the Empire Line running between New York and Savannah gives us essentially a direct and regular freight line certainly as good a one as the present amount of business' will warrant.

Under the agreement the White Star Line" are to charge the lowest currentrate of freight a cross the ocean and are to transfer all goods received on through bills of lading to Savannah. to the vessels of the EmplreLthe in bond charging only the custom house feesand brokreageand cartage the freight and all expenses to fl. low the goods to their destination to be collected on the delivery of the goods to consignees. The Empire line agrees to i' its part of the transportation for a ton and the present average rate of freight from New York to Liverpool is also 250 a ton. The combined rate therefore from Savannah to Liverpool will not be apt to vary much from five dollars a ton.

Cotton will be carried by this combination on through bills of lad. big at the current rate. it has recently been carried by this route from Savannah to Liverpool in fifteen days at 8d a pound. As no direct line eon Liverpool and Savannah says Mr. Tift.

To this important meeting he invites the GoVtI. nor of Georgia the president of railroads and other transportation companies the mayors of cities and presidents of boards of trade and chambers of commerce in the southern and western states. As the railroads will pass these gentlemen to and from the meeting free a large number of the commercial moguls of the south will doubtless be here to lend an increased dignity to the great gatherings of the fair week.

THE worst used up mill in the country Is Congressman Hayes ef Vlabama It will be remembered that he startled the north with a fearful list of assassinations and other outrages. We need not tell our readers that they were a bundle of falsehoods. manufactured for political purposes. But Hayes has recently been convicted in the house of his friends. The New York Tribune sent a long republican to investigate his statements andjsuch a riddling as he gives Hayes was never before experienced by mortal man.

He takes the outrages one after another. and shows that they are to use his own words willful lies. He says in conclu. sion In the majority of the cases Mr. Hayes knew his statements were lies when he wrote them.
