EDWARDS Secretary. What the Democratic JoarnaU ot I the State Think the vers Between Mr. Stephen nA The CusttItlsw When Alex IL Stephens tells his real. to reflect well before deckling whether to support Greeley or Grant he gives us cause I. dout his judgment and makes it our duty to so state to the Democracy who might be misled by him.

Hence we hue with all care and in all courtesy. given extracts from Mr. Stephens' piper and hence we give to-day tn44ironges deciaralion or blind immobility with the commentsTHB CONSTITUTION makes upon it. to welt does that paper state the case and so nitly does it weigh the results of Mr Stephens' policy that we have no word to a ld to its own. But we ask each and every reader who has at heart the success of an honest reform.

over fraud and corruption real and weigh well these extracts. Then lit him remember-in in daily ion in meetings and in convention that there is but one strength vacation end that is Csrrv 3IJ Oe Segater The receipts at all ports this week are 11.000 balia H.O 0 less than last year. and 11000 ka than two years since. It is likely the receipts' for next week at the ports will bu 1000 bales compared with 2000 wt year and 17000 the year before. And receipts at interior towns 3000 compared with 5000 bales last year and 3000 the year before.

The average of the thermometer for the pest week has been seventy-seven degrees at noon five dear days and two rainy days. during which time the earth was thoroughly wet. We never knew liner weather rnr planters than has been for two wtxks post. Everything growing in he gardens and fields looks splendidly. no accident befalls the cotton crop from this tune the crop will turn out fully four millions of bales but for the present every other consideration is laid aside from the fact there is not enough American cotton to supply the spiunvrs' untd the new crop comes in.

The demand for this country and Europe li 60000 bales per week and the supply is only 48000 boles per week. so It is likely the price will continue to rise until consumption is cheeked and if so we may tee higher prices this month and next than the most sanguine have expected. Last week we intimated that the price would go up. and it has risen one end a half cents a pound. As this is the first of the mouth there must not be any great change next week.

Early in the spring we thought there would be cotton enough if speculators did not take hold of it and probably. the price would go no higher. but as soon as the continued corn- plum is from the planters caused speculators to wake up from the dormant state in which they had been for three months we saw at once the price must go very much higher. On the 8th of May we warned our friends who were bran of then danger. It Is only the obstinate that stick to one side and an honest men will always speak what be thinks when It I best to speak at ail.

The speculative excitement has again taken hold of cotton end the bear that Joe not get oat the way will be run down by the crowd who the bull side has control but it may be followed so far the tide will turn at the flood antIthCn run down just as ft as It baa risen and soon poor bull may be left high and dry on the sands. We will try to give the warning within time. The rains have put the crops In splendid conditionbut speculators have taken hold of the small balance of the crop and will de their own price for It and carry it far above Its red value. Every consideration must be laid aside now. No matter what the figures are speculation has again reared its head and It will for tho time overreach everything else tSThe result of Mr.

But we cannot folio the example. We therefore must reply In our nsnal good natured way.

In looking over oar swfejhbori wpjr we have been as much struck at the strong points against him conveniently Ignored as the adroit transfer of attack from kinself low The change of tactics is very sharply done but we must really be excused for dragging Mr. Stephens buck to his mutton. and taking to pieces the useful little work of premise upon which he builds a neat superstructure of fallacious conclusion. Me omits any reply to the proper complaint that while urging the mane to Inves tigate end reflect he clamored for them to decide before a chance to investigate and re fleet that he denounced the numerous and patriotic Democrats at deserters who differed with him about Greeley that he Invited Democrats to a conference for their common welfare to whose result he would never agree if the opinions of others differing from him prevailed that he hat emperOled party unity the vital essential of success by his fierce threat to bolt the party unless his views succeed and that while he recommended Judge Davis a Radical office holder for Democratic support he roundly abuses at 4nrtor those who think it best to support Grteley who was of the same body as Davis. Our neighbor bustle these damaging points silently out of the way without ceremony.

He then shifts attack from himself by miter. stlng that we are ready to abandon principle and proves it by quoting our declarations last year of fidelity to Democratic principle in connection with his utterly unfounded statement that we are going for Oreeley. Uidwhole grave charge of abandonment rests entirety upon our statement that between Oreeley and Grant we would support Ores. Icy and that if the Baltimore Convention recommended the support of' Greeley we should support him This it the argument in a nutshell. Wen Democratic brethren this is pretty steep.

What horrible fellows most you be ho are pressing Oreeley straight for adoption. Lots of Democrats stand with us who hsynL gone the whole step. There's the Do- mocracy of Richmond and Soaldmgoountiep end the majority of the Democratic Executive Committee of the State and John B. Ye Gods but Mr. Stephens has a party of traitors. We are all traitors and he only true. Then Pendleton Is a traitor and the Ten- flosses Democracy a traitor. and Rood Beanregard Taylor.

Hays Hill and other gallant Confederate Generals traitors end McOomn and Beck of Kentucky are traitors end Seymour and Blair traitors and tire State Central Committeemen of seventeen Democratic States traitors and Perry Aldrich Keith Kerrhaw and Porter. of South Carolina traitors and a majority of the Democratic newspapers end people In Virginia Alabama Kentucky Illinois Iowa Michigan. and but we had better stop. Well have the whole concern traitors soon and when treason la so general it may cease to be odious. Of course Mr.

Stephens' charge of desertion from the Democracy applies to an the true and patriotic Democrats who re either or dresicy. or like as will take him if nothing better be obtainable. Leaving out of new the good sense or good feeling of so roas an attack upon the integrity of a large part of the party including some of its ablest end best spirits. let us dispassionately look at tire charge on its merits. Let us see It support of Greeley is abandonment of principle.

It seems to be the habitual practice of our neighbor to blacken what he opposes. He pronounced all New Departurists lest year traitors. He pronounces all Democrats in favor of Oreeley deserters. And he says we who have only proposed to support Greeley If the party says so are ready to abandon principle. Crosby is the leader of a body that has left the Radical party because of its centralization corruption.

arid unconstitutional resort to military power. Its platform calls for the return to local self-government the subordination of the bayonet to the civil authority and the reform of abuses. Greeley stance on end Indorses this platform and we are not so zealous in our views. as to seek me our neighbor to argue Greeley Into what he condemns or to force a construction upon his views foreign to hit purposes. We see no benefit In trying to argne Oreelcy into hostility to his declarations.

Nor do we see any merit in referring to-his record to break down his change from error to truth. Just so far at Greeley Is right we would have the. Democracy indorse nun and no farther. Its support of him for his change to constitutionalism Is no abandonment of principle. It will go no farther.

It proposes to preserve Its organization Intact and if it does take blur up. it wDIbe to advance the triumph of principle yielding nothing In which it opposes him end' indorsing nothing that It condemns. Now we say to Mr. Stephens that we and the large number of noble Democrats who either advise Oreeleya support or are willing to support him If. the party says it cannot be driven front Democratic principle.

We are at true at Mr. Stephens to right and truer. If he proposes to split the party unless his views prevail since we are ready to stand to our organization. We respecf uDy ten Mr. Stephens that In the heat of controversy he hat committed the gravest crime a minded man ma do viz lie hat deliberately distorted our position.

We would not healtate to tell the Democracy to take Grley if we thought it best and Hr Stephens' ferocious assertion that ii Is an abandonment of principle bat no terror. to prevent It. We know better. We know it not an abandonment of principle. Our position has been that we were for Democratic nomination.
