Little dolompkeecreek are some ancient mounds tbeaccrrmuiated labors of race of people long eincdextinct Some rJnt jreceiitTituVto locality only four or rather three and.

traces of a fotrth were found1 Of these1two are sriall ur iVi ilirl i inejwfntsfli Or prty gbvc ici whit a forty or fifty feetin diameter the hearer one standing AWnf an limw' Bhotfeoibihe latestof all lich la by far the chief object pf interest to visitors. The main mound rises abruptly to a height of seventy feetltufrom the bosom of a comparatively level country. Its apex or summit is flat and being. oblong. measures eighty or eighty-Ave yards long and twenty-five or thirty wide rather narrower in the middle than at the ends.

The lung diameter points a little west of north by east of south the northern extremity is so me- what lower than the southern. This level plateau is overgrown. with a luxuriant net. work of vines high grasses briars etc. with here and there ft small tree.

The sides or slopes. however which are quite steep are pretty thickly studded all around with gigantic oaks and hickories together with other smaller trees underneath which is a variety of such undergrowth as is common to the higher portions of pur swampy districts. The mpund eems to becomposed of rich surface soil taken. no doubt from the circunjaeent country. Commencing at the southern extremity of the base and leading off in a northeasterly direction is a little deep' ravine or.

cuannet wnlCb nsa toe appearance of having been once a spacious underground or COVERED. raaoa to the creek. about. three' hundred yards dis. tent.

The lands lying Immediately around are now and have long been In a state of cultivation. jedrsagda shaft or well was sunk in. the ctQtre of this the largest mound. to a depth of smy feet and a stratum of decomposed human bones was nassed near the bottom. Five or six miles to the south bf these mounds and formerly connected with them by a road or trail are other works doubtless of the same people.

They are scattered over wbajt is sgw a level eighty. acre field of very productive lapd siuted between and nearly surrounded by two small stream which wander away from rwil springs. This field is called Walnut Fork from the fact that. Until justbefore the war when it was cleared Ice cultivation it was almost literally shaded ovej by large walnut trees some of them as much as lour feet through. In many places the decaying trunks of these once valuable monsters are standing yet grim silent monuments of the folly that slew them.

Could they have stood untouched there till now 50000 would be a pitiful price for them. This field was once dotted an over by NCMKBOUS SJJAU JIOUKDS somewhat regularly with disposed reference to a larger one in the center. Some of these mousda too were dug into years ago and more than the concentric impressions of reeds in the clay and ashes beneath nothing of interest was found. In addition to these evidences and until recent years in nearly all parts of the field human bones I pieces of earthenware or pottery have been plowed Indigenous to there is also a peculiar weed which springs up spontaneously and bears- beans or berries very much like beads. These mounds' and those mentioned the outset are not widely dissimilar to many others In this and other states of the union.

The large one on the Savannah" river in Elbert County is perhaps more like the Mercier mound than any Ip the state though not so high. Interesting as are theprimitive race1 which once foamed and owned our forests the ax and plow in some places are doing much to obliterate them. It was built by two lads cousins respectively thirteen and totrrteen years of age named Stacy and known1 everywhere throughout that section as Bob and Tom.

The machine was built entirely by the boys Bob being the master builder and the older of the two by one year. The machine was crude In its make for it was bunt by boys without tools. but it had the principlesof cycles of lha present day with one advantage which was that it utilized both the weight and muscle of the rider. The machine had. four wheels each about two feet high connected by iron axles made firm in the wheels upon which rested a frame with standards and a railing.

The front axle was made with a double crank in the center. Tue Anima. Heat Is the Snakes Tall. From the Hartwell GL Sun. The following story is told us by a gentleman who is 10 noted squirrel hunter.
