giwi wliywtu sVttttoasgYsrnr.i There is commotion and ex-' Jtement in the Republican camps in consequence of the election this ere-. Ding by the various ward clubs of delegates to the nominating con ven ation to be held on the 15th inswat Mechanics Institute. Scheming politicians have been at "work to secure the election of etr friends and their friend's friends the convention, and the fight as it mas is a pretty one. The grand trnggle will be for the seat of Sen- ator Harris, whose term expires next year. Got.

Warmoth and Postmaster Jewell being the most prominent candidates. -The contest between these chiefs in the Sadical, party will be a warm one, as both are known to be far-sighted, and to have plenty of the sinews of war. It is thought that the split in the party occasioned by this fight will be a serious one. and 'cool beaded Republicans fear the Democrats may step in and snatch the victory from both. Lowell, it is believed, slightly leads the Governor as regards the colored vote; -out the latter is a shrewd general jn politics, ana will make a stronsr fight.

bleb sn4 tut Disastrous Storm at Mobile. Damage $250,000. taiav Malt Vm etttej esdiy ew tsars saith, tagkL- bqo to sr. to fetes-) which aa S'-'We copy as follows from the Mobile Register, of Saturday wind, which had hung for some time in the around to the south--ern quarter about 12 o'clock to-day, and began to blow a full vale, with rain. The water, already nearly up to the wharves, rose rapidly, soon covering them, and the boats which were fast to them immediately felt the influence of the wind and storm.

The Gertrude broke her lines aad drifted against the Prairie State, which narrowly escaped severe damage. At the time of writing quarter to 1 the Gertrude is adrift and unmanageable. Tbe Ella May broke loose at the foot of St. Louis street, and drifting against on of the wharves above was almost totally wrecked. We.

The Gertrude, we since learn, is secured, is well as the mail boat Frances, which tot adnft at the beginning of the blow, i. river boat has just drifted up past the foot of 6t Francis street, but- we could sot distinguish her name. The alarm, we learn, is caused by the lmakinK of the telegraph wires in dilf or-nt plaees, caused, in some instanced, by the falling of signs, which, with occa-.

tianal filing slates, make it hazardous to in quest of items. Jhe Frances has since gone up the river, -nder steam, but drifting broadsidewise. Ills Mist has drifted up stream unman ageable. Drays are briskly employed convey is goods beyond the reach of the water, una ol the alarms struck was the regular high-water alarm. it half-past 1 wind, which had slacked, is increasing from the southeast "utherly, and the alarm is ringing again.

Fifteen minntea to 'X Th irv WV Is hist drifted up past St. Michael street. iae birara House is partially unroofed FURTHER PARTICULARS. The Register, Sunday morning, has the lowing further particulars Our first notes of the storm, got up as ILs incidents were nassing. were neces sarily inaccurate, and did not even to be complete.

The storm was jrief in cturatiou, oommencins in all its reality just about 12, and being over be fore o'clock. All the direct damage occurred almost at the commencement. "nd the whole, including that from col-uaion of drifting craft, was probably ao- "ompiinLea in tne space ox two noura half-past o'clock, or sooner, the water began to subside, and was soon below the wharves. At no time was it many inches deep in any of the Front street stores, barely reaching the floor of tbe Trade Company's and the Mobile rod Montgomery Railroad offices. jMTe closed oar notes for the evening with the report of the dry dock passing upthe river.

The drifting of this unwieldy mass was the cause of muoh of the damage to the shipping. It first caused the wreck of the: New Orleans Railroad wharf, and that of the oil mill; then cut a wood schooner in two below Government street, and grazed, the Annie, near St. JTrancis street, doing little damage. This collision gave it a sheer that saved the Sumter, which otherwise would have been eomoletelv crushed. As it was.

it tore away a portion of her guards and starboard wheelhouse. jamming her against the soiles with such force as to break all she touched, which were all hut one at the foot of the railroad wharf, end one at the wharf below. The dry dock, keeping on its course, gave the Prairie State a rake, but not a serious one, and after encountering what else we know not. lodged on a wreck at tbe mouth of Chickasabogue. The Prairie State had several narrow eiespes, having previously been struck by the Gertrude, which boat after drift' iog against the Laura, (repairing at Lyons, Key land Alexanders) and sun-cry other craft, rolled her boilers overboard, and lies sunk a total wreck above he citr.

The Mist is in the marsh without her himneva. The Sarah is above the rail road wharf, lodged en a wreck, (unless "is Planter has hauled her off by this me4 and the Jewess is in the marsh coosita the eitv. The. Jewess. Ooeola u4 lx lodged on the Oil Mill wharf, here the Leo remains fast on the spiles.

Tbe Jewes was towed off by the Wright, ana Being in a sincmg condition was caat adrift. The damage done to the wnarz was due in great measure to these boats. The loss at the mill is per-1-apa the largest anywhere, the wharf being verr badlv damaged, and large "uantities of cotton seed and oil cake in lie warehouse snoiled trr the water. The Ella May got some severe bumps, tut farad hetter than ara flrat rennrtAri- being engaged during the evening with the Fountain, in trvin or tn vnll off the g-h bSr Vf11 Wave, which lies at Spanish swtoc. It may be said generally that all the wharves are greatly damaged. Among the incidents of the evening, we must not omit the shooting of a urt-class alligator by Frank Preston. The unwieldy monster, full fifteen feet Ions, was left aground on the Mail Line wharf. Another alligator, we are told, was cap-tured at St.

Louis street several snakes were killed, and as the water was approaching the level of the wharves, tbe urchins, familiarly called rats, had a grand battue among their four-footed kin, who swarmed forth in thousands. We understand, also, that cockroaches is numerable were driven out of their haunts by the rising tide. Throughout town much damage in the aggregate was done by the storm. Trees were torn up or limbs wrenched off, and woodman's axe was ringing" in every direction as soon as the weather permitted, clearing the encumbered sidewalks and streets the latter, in many instances, being completely blockaded. The falling timber, of course, made sad havoc of fenees and palings, and houses sometimes suffered.

One at the northwest corner of Hamilton and Canal streets was cut in two by a large china tree, and the furniture smashed, but none of the inmates injured. But every street would supply its chronicle of damages of this character had we space to tell them. Direct damages by the wind, and con sequential damages by the rain, were numerous. The tin roof of the Girard House lay until the storm was over, a crumpled mass, in Dauphine street. wnich it half hi led up.

The gable of a dwelling, corner of St. Michael and Joa chim streets, was blown in: also that of Van Antwerp's drug store, on Royal street. ha? heard uncertain rumors of loss of life from the falling of a wall. A dray was smashed by snch an accident on St. Michael street, the driver narrowly escaping.

The smoke stack of Willera mm was mown Qown, and a portion 01 Dane's stable, on DauDhine street, un roofed. We could probably fill a column more witn memoranoa 01 oamages nad we leisure and snace for alL The entire damage to the city and shipping cannot now be estimated, but may be Bafelv piacea at Kiu.uuu. i ne Trade Uomnanv estimate their loss at $60,000.
