A third special event is the uncut premiere of Cyril Frankel's 1953 British film "Man of Africa," which was made on location in Africa with an all-black cast. When it was first released, the movie was cut to half its 74 minutes and used as a travelogue. "At last it will be properly rediscovered." "This is an important anniversary for film and for London," said Derek Malcolm, festival program director and film critic for The Guardian newspaper. "It gives me great pleasure that we are starting with the world premiere of a new British film and ending with another." "Castaway" stars Oliver Reed and Amanda Donohoe in the film vine. It is a romantic tragicomedy about a young woman in search of adventure who marries a middle-aged man and goes to live on a tropical island with him. "Gothic" stars Gabriel Byrne, Julian Sands and Natasha Richardson.

It is the story about the gathering on the night of June 16, 1816, of Lord Byron, Percy Shelley and Mary Shelley from whence sprang the classic horror tales "Frankenstein" and "Vampire," a predecessor of "Dracula." Malcolm called Roeg and Russell "among the most imaginative directors we've ever had, and also among the most maligned by some people." Roeg's films include "The Timing." Russell has directed "Tommy," "The Devils" and "Women in Love." Both filmmakers have received mixed receptions for their works. One hundred fifty feature films and 60 shorts are being screened in 10 theaters throughout the capital during the festival that began Nov. 13 and ends Nov. 30. Malcolm said programming 28 British films, including the Welsh-language "Boy Soldier" and Terry Jones' "Personal Services," proved that the designation of 1985 as British Film Year wasn't really just a fluke.

As was the case at this year's New York Film Festival, the French lineup looks strong. "I think we're going to lose our audience here," he observed to Lynch. The scene was eliminated. Growing up in Yakima, Kyle MacLachlan led a somewhat sheltered childhood. They sort of lose themselves, and I see something strange behind the eyes. They condemn the film with such vehemence that it's not quite right somehow." MacLachlan admitted that he had his own misgivings about Lynch's "Blue Velvet" script. "A few months before we started shooting, I said, 'I don't think I can do this I told David that there were a couple of scenes that, as they were written, I just couldn't do.

He understood, and we let it sit for a couple of months. Finally I came around, and I said, 'Yes, I gotta do it.
