TODAY'S HIGHLIGHTS TV tonight challenges the brain By Mike Hughes Gannett News Service The human brain can do odd and wondrous things. It can give us the dark brilliance of Eugene O'Neill, the dark fury of the religious right.

It can also give us the brittleness of a fresh romantic comedy. And on Wednesday, we can study all of those, plus the brain itself. Details include: PBS "Infinite Voyage" uses its third hour (7 p.m.) to ponder the brain. The result has little to say, because so. little is known.

There are some fascinating moments, including actual samples taken from the brain of the late Albert Einstein; answers, however, are scarce. But at least the questions are posed beautifully. The series boasts rich writing, stunning effects and splendid touches. In just over a minute, for instance, it uses photos and film to summarize 45 centuries of civilization. Then comes a visit to one of the most fascinating of those brains.

"Journey Into Genius" (8 p.m., PBS)mixes dramatized scenes and still pictures to capture the early years of O'Neill's writing career. "He was a beautiful young man with haunted eyes," one character recalls, "who thought he could write plays." "Eugene was an artist, a poet, a dreamer of words," another marvels. "And he was an American." But he lived under the shadow of his father, an actor who spent his career cavorting in the simple melodrama of "The Count of Monte Cristo." We see Eugene planning a tougher, tauter kind of work. "I want to kill off the kind of theater he parades around in." Well-played by Matthew Modine and a rich assortment of character actors, the result is intelligent and involving. And then comes PBS' latest controversy.

"Thy Kingdom Come" is the probe of the religious right, commissioned and rejected by the "Frontline" series. It finally emerges at 9 p.m. Meanwhile, there's alfD room for some fresh romantic comedy. At 8:30, ABC launches "Just in Time." The idea started with one of those "production deals" that often get bogged down. Tim Matheson, a bouyant presence since "Animal House," began working on a series at Warner Brothers.

This would be filmed with one camera and no audience, Matheson decided. "We didn't want to do setup-joke-setup-joke. You can't get those intimate moments between characters." Tonight 8 p.m. 6:30 a.m. O- This Morning Scheduled: Billy Carter.

I I I By Jerry Buck Associated Press LOS ANGELES Tim Matheson hopes his new ABC comedy, "Just in Time," will disprove the network belief that once a couple gets together, the relationship is no longer interesting. "Just in Time" brings Matheson and co-star Patricia Kalember together not only in a personal involvement but in a professional relationship that often has them at swords' point. "They think the steam goes out of the relationship once they get together," said Matheson, whose romantic comedy he's co-executive producer with Fred Barron premieres at 8:30 tonight on channels 3 and 13.

There's an element of truth in that network belief. When Diane Chambers and Sam Malone got together on NBC's "Cheers," the producers had to keep pulling them apart to keep the story going. ABC's "Moonlighting" has suffered since David and Maddie went to bed, although the show's problems are more complicated than that. "Fred Barron, who had worked on 'Kate created the show and he wanted to set up a contemporary relationship," said Matheson. "Fred thinks that things don't start to get interesting until the couple gets together.

Having been married 2Vz years, I can say that's certainly so." The show is set in a Los Angeles magazine publishing company. "I play a hot-shot Chicago editor who's brought in to take what's basically a conservative, staid monthly and turn it into a hip, contemporary weekly," Matheson said. "Patricia's the star columnist and their professional relationship soon evolves into a romantic liaison. It's difficult because we work together. And she has a long-distance relationship.

She's playing it safe, and he's just come out of a divorce and tends to be a little more reckless." The relationship between the two will change in the course of the series' spring run. "In the beginning, she's resistant and has a million reasons why they shouldn't," he said. "He says let's go for it." Matheson is best-known to movie audiences from his role as a womanizing fraternity brother in the hit movie Bottom 10 "Garry Shandling Show," Children," 74. (NA) FOX, 4.6. 74.

(NA) Patricia Kalember portrays columnist Joanna Farrell and Tim Matheson plays her boss Harry Stadlin and the sparks fly in "Just In Time," a new comedy airing tonight on ABC. "National Lampoon's Animal House." He later starred in "A Little Sex." Matheson has a long line of TV credits dating back to 1961 when he was a child and starred in "Window on Main Street," with Robert Young. He did guest shots on "Leave It to Beaver" and was a regular on "The Virginian," "Bonanza," "The Quest" and "Tucker's Witch." "A series is so grueling," he said, "especially an hour show. A half-hour show's much better. We rehearse one day and then shoot it one-camera with no laugh track.

It's not an audience show, because when you do that you need two laughs a page. With that kind of structure you can't deal with the emotions or any depth of character. "We let the humor come out of the situations, rather than do a set-up, then a joke, then another set-up." Matheson and his wife, former ballerina Megan Murphy, recently became parents for the second time. Their new daughter is Emma. They have another daughter, Mollie.
