Programs, Mar. 29 -Apr. 4 Hooterville Cannonball Is Important 'Character' Monday March 29, 196S tat Pjj, American Farm Is 20th Century Topic The technological revolution on the American farm, resulting in food surpluses and labor displacement, is examined in "The Farmer: Feast or Famine" on "The Twentieth Century" Sunday, March 28. Filmed in Iowa, North Carolina and California, the broadcast visits farms ranging from small, uneconomic ones to huge, factorylike enterprises. According to the U.

S. Department of Agriculture, the big, highly-capitalized farmer makes up 22 per cent of the industry, and produces 72 per cent of all farm goods, including most of the surpluses; the rest of the farming population is being driven inexorably off the land by efficient machinery. 6:30 a. m. 2-Sunrise Semest.

While touring Australia, Best rode through the Queensland region on a picturesque narrow-gauge train that struck him as being the spittin' image of the mythical Hooterville Cannonball. Setting up his tape recorder in the first car behind the locomotive, Best, with ilenning's needs in mind, recorded the roars, rattles, clicks and toots periodically during the trip. These sounds, as captured by Best, are among those emanating from the Cannonball as it chugs across the television screen on its regular run for Hooterville to Pixley and back. Juliet's delicate beauty is cast opposite Jimmy Stewart and Manreen O'llara. The steam-powered little 'rain known as the Hooterville Cannonball isn't listed in the cast of "Petticoat Junction." But as far as producer Paul Henning and good many viewers are concerned, it is a most important character in the series, seen Tuesday nights.

Any railroad buff will tell you that a steam locomotive can talk. Authenticity-minded Henning made certain Jiat the Hooterville Cannon-ball would say exactly the right thing at the right time. For that purpose, he enlisted the aid of Gerald Best, a retired consulting engineer who is not only an ardent student of railroad lore but is probably the world's foremost authority on the sounds of railroading. Besides owning a library devoted to his favorite subject and a. collection of more than photographs picturing every aspect of railroading, Best has more than 500 tape recordings of the sounds that trains make under various conditions.

Best has made his recordings of the sounds that trains make under various conditions. Best has made his recordings while traveling ontrain of all varieties and vintages throughout the world. EAGER BEAVER SERVICE rn CABLE CHATTER So many people have asked us why we change channel 7 to channel 4. I guess some people think we have changed channels that way to save us money or make things easier for us or something. The truth is that it costs us quite a bit more to change a channel like this than it does to carry a channel straight through without changing it. But we have changed channel 7 to channel 4 for a very definite reason to make sure channel 7 has the best possible picture on the cable.

If we left channel 7 on channel 7 on our cable you might get a distorted channel 7 picture. That is because we are close to channel 7 and your set might pick up channel 7 directly through wiring in the set or off the power line. This direct pickup would mix with channel 7 from the cable and you would see two channel 7 pictures only not exactly on top each other and your channel 7 pictures would be a mess. So we move channel 7 to another channel where there will be no interference. We don't like to change channels but we do it to make sure you get the best possible picture.

If the much rumored channel 9 at Wausau comes on the air we will be changing that channel from 9 to 12 and for the same reason to give you the best possible picture. Some of the older cable systems can transmit only channels 2 through 6 and they change channels for another reason. The reason is that they cannot carry channels like 8 or 11 or 13 directly as their cable will not transmit those channels. So those channels are changed to low channels like 2, 3, 4, etc. This is a little confusing to the viewers but has to be done that way due to the limitations of the cable system.

These older cable systems can be found in some parts of northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. We are fortunate here in Marshfield to have a "Wide Band" cable system which transmits all channels from 2 through 13 so we have many channels to watch plus the advantage of having most of them on the same channel you find listed in this TV section and in TV Guide and other places.
