Slominski, 30, graduated from Wausau High in 1960 and received a B. S. Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, in 1965. He lettered three years in football in college. In 1970 he received his Masters Degree at Northern Michigan University.

From 1965 to 1949 he was head football and track coach at Edgar High School. After a year as graduate assistant football coach at Northern Michigan, he became head football coach at Lancaster. In five years of coaching his teams have won two championships. In addition to coaching football, Slominski will teach history and phy ed at Medford. Slominski's outside interests include hunting, fishing, baseball and skiing.

He is a former national junior ski jumping champion. He succeeds Gary Reineck, who resigned to accept a job assistant coach at the FILING SLANDER SUIT Noah Dietrich, left, filed a $51 million slander suit against billionaire industrialist Howard Hughes Thursday in Los Angeles. Dietrich, Hughes' former business associate, alleged that Hughes slandered him during a telephone news conference held last January. (AP Wirephoto) Fischer Loses Draw Thursday By STEPHENS BROENING REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) Bobby Fischer lost the draw Thursday night, giving Boris Spassky the first move, and the world championship chess match will finally start next Tuesday. Unless the American challenger or the Soviet champion pleads illness and gets another postponement.

The confusion of the past week was summarized by the old woman selling cigarettes who asked in the beginning: "Fischer come?" Near the end it go?" "I'm very pessimistic," Dr. Max Euwe said at 10 a.m. At noon: "It's a very delicate situation." At 7 p.m., the president of the International Chess Federation sighed: "There's hope." That was Tuesday. It could have been any day in the garbled prelude to what chess lovers say is the match of the century Spassky of the U.S.S.R. vs.

Fischer of the U.S.A. Spassky arrived early to wait for Bobby. Saying "I came to play," he philosophically ac (Tonite) Friday, July HOWIE STURTZ JULY 12th, cepted the first postponement when Fischer didn't show. Later he demanded an apolo-j gy or he wouldn't play. At one news conference, one (of Fischer's lawyers said he'd come to say he had nothing to say.

Yefim Geller, Spassky's second, fielded questions with: "Kak Gavarit po Angliski," or as you say in English, "No comment." Then there's the "eavesdropper," a man approaching middle age with a shock of graying hair combed in careful disarray onto his forehead. He takes voluminous notes, for a magazine piece, he says. On scraps of paper he records conversations he's overheard. He carries the scraps in a red plastic shopping bag as he moves soundlessly about the hotel lobbies. One final quote, from Gud-mundur Thorarinsson, president of the Icelandic Chess Federation, who was under pressure from Fischer to give up a share of the gate receipts: "I have worked for more than a year to get this match to Iceland.

I would do many things. But I will not bite into a sour apple." Thanks to a rich British chess fan who doubled the stakes, he didn't have to. By JOE MOOSHIL CHICAGO (AP) Mike Cuel-lar isn't sure whether it was the strike, cold weather or his 35 years of age but he simply couldn't get it going early this season. Saddled with a 1-5 record earlier in the season, Cuellar has turned it completely around posting five triumphs in his last six decisions over the span of less than a month.

He did it all Thursday night when he hurled the Baltimore Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox and drove in the tie-breaking run with a two- Smelt Dying In Superior DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -Conservationists do not know what is causing the deaths of several tons of smelt, which have washed up along the North Shore of Lake Superior. The fish are causing an odor and disposal problem, especially along Duluth's Park Point. Osmo E. Tahia.

The fish began dying in mid-May and early June, about a "month after spawning, and Tayja says it is expected to last another two or three weeks. Charles Burrows, assistant "supervisor of state fisheries, said the dead smelt litter the Minnesota shoreline as far north as Pigeon River.

He said the deaths have occurred throughout the big lake. "Burrows speculated the deaths may be caused by a shortage of some necessary nutritional element, because of the extremely heavy smelt population in recent years. This is the third and by far the most lethal year for the smelt die-off. "Arm was stiff early in the season," said Cuellar after stopping the Sox on five hits.

"Maybe the cold weather, maybe the strike. I go home to Puerto Rico during strike. Maybe I got lazy. Maybe I should have worked more. I don't know.

Now I feel like I 19 years old." Manager Earl Weaver, asked why he allowed Cuellar to hit for himself in the eighth, explained, "I would have taken him out if we were losing but not with the game tied. Frankly, I wasn't looking for Mike to get the hit. I was really looking ahead and seeing him get the Sox out. The way he was throwing he could have pitched 14, 15 or 16 innings." "Cuellar was great," said Sox Manager Chuck Tanner L. u.

We iust can't cet the runs I don't expect the team to hit .260 like last year but I'd like to see us climb gradually, maybe to .250 by the end of the season." Until Hendricks doubled with two out in the eighth, Bradley was working on a two-hitter with the only men reaching base being Brooks Robinson who singled in the second and Terry Crowley who put Baltimore ahead 1-0 with his fifth homer in the fourth.
