Ryan (10-5) 9 (Kosco). 4004 8 HBP-Stephenson Durocher Wages Psy Psychological Warfare on Atlanta Braves By BRUCE LOWITT Associated Press Sports Writer "I didn't give a damn if he ever turned in the lineup," Atlanta pitcher Phil Niekro said of Chicago Manager Leo Durocher. "The Cubs had to come up there sooner or later." Durocher, still steaming over a rainout Tuesday night that cost his Cubs a shot at a victory over the Braves, took out his Major League Standings TAKES TWO ON HIGH ONE Houston Asros' centerfielder Cesar Cedeno goes head first with a steal of second in the second inning as Pittsburgh Pirates' second baseman Rennie Stennett tries to take the high hard one from his catcher, Manny Sanguillen, that ended up in centerfield. Cedeno took third on the over throw.

Pittsburgh took the game in Houston, 6-4. (AP Wirephoto) wrath against everybody in lanta Stadium Wednesday with a bit of psychological warfare. That "everybody" meant the Braves, the sports writers and the 10,324 fans who, up until the last moment, were kept from seeing the Cubs' lineup. When Ron Scheuler of Atlanta got a look at it, he liked what he saw just seven innings. And when Niekro got his shot at it, he enjoyed the view for the entire nine.

Scheuler had a no-hitter going for 5 2-3 innings and a three-hit shutout for seven, But a four -run outburst in the eighth inning gave the Cubs a 4-1 victory in the opener of their twinight doubleheader. Niekro spaced his hits more evenly, yielding six of them but holding on for a 3-2 victory over Chicago in the second game. Elsewhere in the National League, Pttsburgh defeated Houston 6-4 and Los mauled Montreal 7-3. San Diego's game against the Mets in New York and San Francisco's at Philadelphia were rained out. Cincinnati and St.

Louis were not scheduled. Durocher had protested Tuesday's rainout decision but the National League upheld it. "The powers that be in this league are Durocher bellowed, unloading a choice expletive, "and you can quote me." Then he caught himself. "Oh, hey. You can't use he smiled.

"Well, just say they're and he shot forth another, When Scheuler gave up a pair of singles to the Cubs at the start of the eighth inning of Wednesday's first game, Joe Hoerner took over on the mound. He struck out the first next one and walked batter he faced, then the pinch ter Jim Hickman to force over the tying run. Ron Santo then grounded to Darrell Evans but the third baseman's throw home was wild and two runs scored. Carman Fanzone's run-scoring single capped the uprising that gave Ferguson Jenkins his 10th victory. Mike Lum's solo home run in the fifth inning of the second game gave the Braves a 3-0 lead.

Niekro yielded an unearned run in the eighth inning and Billy Williams' leadoff homer, his 16th, in the ninth. Manny Sanguillen's two-run double and Bob Robertson's two-run homer in the fourth inning wiped out Houston's 4-1 lead and Roberto Clemente added an insurance run in the fifth with a homer. Bob Johnson, replacing Pittsburgh starter Dock Ellis in the second. inning, silenced Houston on just two hits the rest of the way. Willie Davis' three-run double highlighted a four-run second inning against Montreal that enabled the Dodgers to snap a five-game tailspin.

As of Now, Chess Meet Will Start on Sunday By STEPHENS BROENING REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) Bobby Fischer made a full and penitent apology to Boris Spassky today, and organizers of the world chess championship match said the two would meet for their first game Sunday night. The organizers said it had been agreed in principle to hold the drawing tonight to determine which player would have white pieces and with them the first move. The young American, in a letter delivered by hand this morning to the world chess champion from the Soviet Union, apologized for his "dis- respectful behavior." Fischer, whose delayed arrival doubled the prize money for both him and Spassky but also started an avalanche of confusion, asked the Russian to "accept my sincerest apology." "I simply became carried away by my petty dispute over money with the Icelandic chess organizers," he wrote. The written apology from the American challenger was one of the chief conditions posed by the Russians before Spassky would sit down at the chess Boats A Canoes ALUMINUM From Only $16688 SPORTS GARDEN CENTER 1 Mile East Of Auburndale On "10" Mile On Phone 652-2247 NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST DIVISION PCT. FRIDAY'S GAMES Texas at Baltimore, Kansas City at Cleveland, New York at Minnesota, Detroit at Chicago, Milwaukee at Oakland, Boston at California, 12 THE MARSHFIELD Thursday, NEWS July 6, HERALD, 1972 Marshfield, Wis. had he gotten some batting support from the Milwaukee Brewers. He carried the Brewers through eight scoreless innings, then lost a shutout in the ninth when pinch hitter Winston Llenas' two-out single gave the California Angels a 1-0 victory.

It was Stephenson's first earned run in 23 innings. It was Llenas' first hit since May 21. Stephenson has been graduated to starter status, but says he preferred his former role as a reliever because it gave him an opportunity to work more. "I like the tougher challenge of relieving," he said. "Besides, you are in more games working in the bull pen." "As a starter," he continued, "you are only working every fourth or fifth day." The Brewer bats weren't working, and Stephenson found himself in a duel with California hurler Nolan Ryan, off whom Milwaukee could collect only four hits as he won his 10th game against five loses.

The Angels were down by two outs in the ninth when Llenas went to the plate as a substitute for Ryan. California's Ken McMullen had opened with a drive that bounced off the glove of waukee shortstop Rich Auerbach. Sid O'Brien ran for McMullen, and got to second on a sacrifice bunt. He scored on Llenas' hit. Llenas has been batting .270 this year on 10 hits, and said it isn't easy to hit off Stephenson.

"I faced Stephenson in the Caribbean League over the winter," he related, "and I never got a hit off him." Stephenson scattered seven Angel hits. The Brewers never got a runner past second base. Ryan struck out Brewers eight times, raising his season accumulation to 122. Milwaukee winged him for Ron Theobald and Ellie Rodriguez singles, an Auerbach double and a George Scott single. Stephenson had to work his way out of trouble early in the contest because of a Rodriguez error and a hit batter.

Two flies ended the threat. By the seventh inning, Stephenson had given the Angels only three hits. Auerbach's eighth-inning, two-out double terminated a Ryan string of eight consecutive outs. Stephenson ended the Brewer bid by striking out. Red Sox Get Fifth Consecutive Complete Game in Fenway Park By HAL BOCK Associated Press Sports Writer Lee Stange, who spent four American League seasons pitching for the Boston Red Sox in cozy Fenway Park with the friendliest left field wall in all of baseball, laughed out loud.

Stange, now the Red Sox' pitching coach, was watching newsmen and club officials scurry through record books after Marty Pattin's five-hitter beat Minnesota 2-0 Wednesday night and gave Boston hurlers five straight complete games. "Forget about looking it up," advised Stange, who has seen his share of pitchers eaten alive by the close-in left field wall they call the Green Monster at Fenway. "It probably never happened before. Not in this ball park anyway." The Red- Sox have forgotten about their bullpen since last Saturday. Since then, they've started five different pitchers and gotten five straight complete game victories which is about as good as a pitching staff can do.

Pattin's victory was the seclond consecutive shutout in the string, following Lynn, McGlothen's three hitter against the Twins Tuesday. The other route-going efforts in the string belong to Ray Culp, John Curtis and Luis Tiant. Elsewhere in the American League Wednesday, Baltimore blanked Chicago 1-0, Kansas City trimmed Detroit 8-2, New York downed Oakland 4-1 and California nipped Milwaukee 1- 0. Texas at Cleveland was postponed by rain. With the pitching staff coming through so well, the Red Sox have won six straight games and eight of the last nine.

The streak has moved Boston into third place in the American League East, five back of division leading Baltimore. The Sox nicked Jim Perry, 6- 8, for a second inning run on Cards Lose Pitcher For Rest of Season ST. LOUIS (AP) Scipio Spinks, Cardinal righthander who tore ligaments in his right knee in a game at Cincinnati Tuesday, will be lost for the season, the club reported Wednesday. Spinks, 24, is to undergo surgery today by Dr. Stan London, team surgeon, at Jewish Hospital here.

He will have to wear a cast for six weeks and undergo therapy for another six weeks. Al Santorini will take over Spinks' starting spot in the pitcher rotation, but the Cards said it was not immediately determined who would be brought up from the minors to bring the roster up to the 25 limit. Spinks was injured when he scored from first. base on a double but collided with Reds' catch oJhnny Bench. Spinks had a 5-5 record, led the club with 93 strikeouts and had a 2.67 earned run average.

Fisk's double, a wild pitch and Bob Burda's sacrifice fly. They got their other run in the eighth when Tommy Harper was hit by a pitch, stole second and rode home on Carl Yastrzemski's third hit of the game. Baltimore edged two games in front of Detroit at the top of the AL East as Dave McNally limited Chicago to five hits and Brooks Robinson's second inning homer accounted for the only run of the game. It was the fifth shutout of the season for McNally, 9-7, who Wilbur Wood, 12-9. Kansas City jumped on Mickey Lolich for three first-inning runs and thumped the sagging Tigers, who have now lost five of their last six games to slip behind Baltimore.

The Royals bunched hits by Fred Patek, Amos Otis, Richie Scheinblum and John Mayberry plus an error by Paul Jata to take a quick lead. Then they kayoed Lolich, 13-6, with three more runs in the sixth. The Tiger ace allowed 10 hits and was disgusted with his performance. "This was probably the poorest game I've pitched all year," he said. "Yeah, it was the worst.

I was wild inside the strike zone." Paul Spilttorff pitched a three-hitter for the KC victory. The Yankees got a six-hitter from Steve Kline, 7-3, to beat Oakland and Ken Holtzman. Felipe Alou and Thurman Munson tagged home runs for New York. The Yankees, who've won six of their last seven games, tagged Holtzman for 11 hits as he dropped his sixth game in 17 decisions. Nixon Picked His All-time Baseball Team, So Players Rate Presidents PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Philadelphia Phillies were knocking around the locker room on Independence Day, waiting to engage the San Francisco Giants, when a reporter walked in and asked them what they thought of President Nixon's all-star baseball team.

The Phillies, like everyone else, had read Nixon's personal album of stars, which was obtained by the Associated Press and published in many Sunday newspapers. The President had prepared the list in 1 response to a newsman who had asked him to name his favorite baseball players. Sportswriter Stan Hochman of the Philadelphia Daily News got the idea that if presidents can choose the greatest baseball players, baseball players can name the all-star presidents. So Hochman raised the issue with the Phillies. Once they were asked-on the Fourth of July-to compile an on-the-spot pantheon of presidential standouts, the Phillies replied with the spirit of the day and the enthusiasm of athletes.

"Who's on the $1,000 bill? asked Dick Selma, a pitcher. "George Washington," was Jim Nash's choice. "He's the only guy whose picture my wife allows in my billfold." "Zachary Taylor," snickered second baseman Denny Doyle. "Why? Because nobody else probably thought of him." "I've been in the game 15 years and nobody's ever asked me that question," mused Deron Johnson, "I've got to go Get CASH QUICKLY And You Get LOWEST RATES At Your Credit Union Central Catholic Credit Union 114 E. 3rd 384-2343 LIFE AGENCY OPPORTUNITY Our, client, a distinguished, insurance well-known, New progressive life, health and accident company (non York) in business well over 70 years, with a successful life, health, accident and stimulating sales program plus a competitive portfolio that includes participating life, pension, retirement and annuity plans, non-cancellable and guaranteed renewable health and accident insurance, disability income, major medical, hospitalization, variable annuities and other related products, contemplates immediate expansion in the greater Marshfield and surrounding area.
