About 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon three strangers iu the oity became involved iu a quarrel over shakiugdioe in (tus Shubert's saloon. One of the trio, who Iias the appearance of being a genu-iuo tough gave the name Joe Murphy, bis partner's name was not learned. The fiirj man is a Centennial valley farmer and gave the name Morris. The first two came up here from Sturgis recently. But a few words were passed when Murphy picked up a heavy beer glass aud let it tly at Morris' head, it missing the mark however, and shattering one of the front wiudows, a $55 plate glass.

Chief of Police Din i arrested tho tiio but afterwards let Morris go on a bond given by L. M. Parker, aud the third man who had nothing to do with the row was released. Mu: phy is iu the county jail and will have a hearing before Justioe Early today on a charge of asiituit with a dangerous weapon. Murphy insists that Morris drew a kuife on him, which is denied.

Mr. Shu-bert cannot see where he has any recourse. Uu is oat a $55 no of gl ise and sending a loifer to jail for a short term is poor Tho wus of the Bills are not ooming to the front very well with their assessments levied bv the executive oommittee of the Black Uills Improvement association. Little Central City has been the first one to respond, sending down its as. sessuient yesterday.

The movement started out in good shape and the association will accomplish muoh for the Hills in general if it will work. Tbe only danger is that interest in the matter will die out, as many euoh movements have heretofore. Why doesn't Deadwood come to the front and put op our assessment and not hang baok? It is just as easy to do it today as at some future time, and will be a great deal better. Procrastination is the thief of time and by this everlasting potting off aud indifference, which has been char Hoteristio of our community, we have been deprived of many things we could have had if we had looked after them.
