Madison, an ye-witness who was en route to Chippewa Falls and was driving a few hundred feet behind the Reinhardt car when it struck the bridge, stated to the officers that Rein-hardt's car was weaving on the highway a short time before the accident and that it then left the concrete pavement and went about 50 feet on the right shoulder of the highway before it grazed the rail post of the railroad overhead and crashed into the bridge a few feet ahead. The right front part of the car was demolished and the impact swung the rear end of the car a-round to the center of.

the concrete highway. From the evidence found by the officers, Reinhardt apparently was thrown forward, his head striking the dash from the force of the impact Companion Is Questioned Questioned by the officers. Kirk stated that Reinhardt was driving the car when the crash occurred, but the officers found evidence to threatening to oppose Heil on' account of Frey, there have been times when his impatience might! have led to his resignation. Why Frey remained, and be came the butt of a bitter personal campaign of attack inspired by projects for which the Governor's office was iadirectly responsible, if only by reason of the fact that it did not veto them, has never been explained. It has been obvious enough to warrant universal comment, however, that Heil has not done a single thing to defend his friend.

It is all the more curious then that Good land, who didn't know Frey until he met him in the Capitol two years ago, should now step in and give him a friendly personal endorsement, and take it upon himself to inform the public through press statements of the value of Frey's accomplishments. H. LUDWIG, 212 E. 3RD. State Capitol -vi Close-ups By Jslsa W. Wrnsar Madison The most peculiar incongruity with which the Capitol scene has been brightened in many days is the warm defense of August Frey, Research Bureau director, by Lt.

Gov. Walter S. Good- land. Frey during the last three years has been the target of more abuse and criticism than any other man in the Capitol. During all that time the Capitol knew well that he came to his job through appointment by Governor Heil, knew that he was a close personal friend of the Governor, and that he had enjoyed that intimacy for many years, in business and in politics.

Occasionally someone expressed surprise that during the periods of heavy fire in the direction of Frey the Governor never lifted a finger in his defense, never by word or deed indicated that he approved Frey's multitudinous and controversial projects, indeed, sometimes hinted that he did not know what Frey was doing, or what the storm which constantly blew around him was all about. For all practical purposes Heil ignored his assistant and old friend, and it was because he at times indicated indifference to ward him, that personal opponents of the research director were encouraged to intensify their scorn ful lampooning and incessant po litical maneuvering to get rid of him. Stranger Helps Those who knew Frey well know also that he felt keenly the Governor's lack of interest and lack of support in his work. Although there are those who allege that Frey's purported resignation just before the election last fall was a ruse to deceive the conservationist organizations who were NEILLSVILLE TONITE THURS.
