'ng project the 125 member is scheduled to finance a chain-link fence around the nearly century old Gritter school, located northwest of North English. The red brick structure is preserved and maintained by the group. Schools with established dates depicted on the collector's plate include: Williamsburg, 1887; Marengo, 1869; Amana 1874 (high school, 1934); Millersburg, 1904; North English, 1894; Conroy 1918; Ladora, 1903; Victor, 1870; Parnell, 1889; and Gritter, plate center, 1874. As a former pupil of Gritter school, Mrs. Fox has become enthused on the subject of county schools.

She comments that Gritter school once reached the enrollment of 60 pupils, all crowded into the one room structure. Her dad told her that pupils progressed through the school in three sections, according to reading advancement. Land for Gritter, named for the nearby creek, was purchased from the late L. F. and Sarah Meeker for only $8.

Final classes were held there in May 1951. Non-denominational church services were also held at Gritter during the Depression, says Mrs. Fox. The late Homer Anderson, occasionally took converts to Gritter creek for baptismal services. James becomes itor in Minnesota Campbell of Goodhue, all of Goodhue county.

Mr. Williams is a former resident of Williamsburg and is the son of the late Mr.

and Mrs. Morgan Williams. Welsh reelected to insurance firm board of directors Floyd Welsh of Williamsburg, retired secretary of the Patrons Mutual Insurance Association, was reelected to the board of directors of the IMT Mutual Insurance Co. of Des Moines last week. Welsh was one of four board members, including the longtime chairman of the board, to be reelected.

Members of the commission are inviting any citizen who is interested in county zoning to attend the to have the panel's plans explained, according to Don Shoup, commission secretary. County attorney Lewis C.

McMeen also has been invited to explain applicable provision of the state law on county zoning and land use. At a meeting held Feb. 21, members of the commission discussed zoning plans for the cities of Marengo, North English and Homestead. Currently Williamsburg is the only city in the county with a municipal zoning plan. If county zoning is adopted, all cities in the county would immediately come under municipal-type zoning until their city governments adopted their own zoning.

Plans also are in the works for certain unincorporated towns in the county like the Amana villages. Haas wins soybean award Laurel J. Haas of Marengo proved it is possible to be both an active public official and a successful farmer last week by winning the Iowa county soybean growers contest. The county award, sponsored by the Farmers Cooperative Grain Lumber. Co.

of Conroy, went to Haas for his top yield in the county of 52.93 bushels an acre. Dwight Felling, also of placed second with a yield of 51.57 bushels an acre. Ten contestants entered the fifth annual contest. Haas had placed third in the contest for four straight years before winning this year. The ten entries in this year's contest averaged more than 47 bushels per acre, slightly less than in 1972, but weather was cited as a factor in the lower yield.

The average yield for the state is over 60 bushels per acre. Also entered in the contest were Newton Jones, Raymond Roberts, John Buser, Nyle Felling, Robert Hawkins, Carroll Gorsch, Ralph Jones and Henry Plagmann, jr. Haas is a member of the Iowa county board of supervisors and spends one to two days a week on that job. Margaret Watkins plays in Buena Vista band; begin concert tour Margaret Watkins, senior at Buena Vista college at Storm Lake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Robert Watkins of Williamsburg, is a member of the college band which goes on a five-day tour starting Monday. The band will present concerts at 10 towns and cities as follows: Monday: Lake View, Manson, Rolfe and Goldfield where the band will stay over night; Tuesday: West Bend and West Union where the band will stay over night; Wednesday: Elkader and a side trip to Minneapolis, where the band will stay overnight; Thursday at Waterloo; Friday at Gillette Grove, returning to Storm Lake that night. In discussing the other county schools, Mrs. Fox says that most of the schools began operating in grades one through ten. The first Parnell school was established by the Catholic church, but youngsters of nonmember families were also encouraged to attend the school.

In 1916, the school was consolidated. The original Victor building, shown on the plate, was destroyed by fire only two years after being opened. Bridges eyed by county Bridges were still in the county news this week as the county supervisors barricaded a previously closed bridge and heard bad news about another span. The new barricades were" posted on the Iowa river bridge just north of Marengo on the road half a mile west of Highway 411. This bridge has been closed since the 1950's, but apparently has been used by motorcyclists and fishermen recently. The county believes it is even too dangerous for that, with it sagging severely on one end, so it will be barricaded so no one can get on it. The other bridge to come before the supervisors is on a county road in Section 32 of Pilot township between land owned by Sylvan Collingwood.

This bridge is just west of the Lambert Elwood farm where Michael Elwood now lives. Supervisors Chairman Theodore R. (Pete) Lane said this is a wood bridge built out of white oak in the late 1930's. He said there has been substantial deterioration in it. The supervisors took no action on the bridge at their regular Tuesday meeting, awaiting a formal recommendation from the county engineer.

Of the bridge closed last week which is located in Lincoln township, the supervisors have learned that a large culvert could be used to replace it. However, the board1 will await a final report from their bridge inspectors on aU the bridges in the county that will have to be closed before they decide where and which ones might by culverts.
