I can do what needs to be "If I went in, I would soon be in the shape they're in." Murray said he never considered placing Mrs. Rice in the nursing home as a way of keeping her husband there.

"That's a totally absurd statement that came from a social worker in HRS," he said. has an undeterminable amount of life span left." Mrs. Rice was advised by an unidentified counselor for the state Department of Health and Reha-V bilitative Services that if she entered the home too, half of her husband's income would be considered hers and both would qualify for state assistance. "I'm not going to go into the nursing home," said Mrs. Rice an for state Medicaid, which paid the bill of $54 a day.

State rules required Rice to apply for any other benefits due him. Because he is a World War II veteran, he applied for VA assistance. Once he qualified for VA aid, however, he lost his Medicaid eligibility because his income increased to $2 over the limit of $870 a month. The home's administrator says the VA will pay the nursing home only $40 a day to care for Rice, and the facility cannot afford to lose the difference in money every month. "We're attempting to find an alternative service or another nursing home for him," said administrator Joe Murray on Thursday.

"We would lose approximately $5,000 a year on this patient, who WINTER GARDEN (AP) Because he receives $2 more than the legal limit, 67-year-old Eugene Rice is being asked to leave a nursing home. But if his wife moves in with him, they can both become eligible for the state Medicaid program. Eugene and Anne Mae Rice are confronted with that dilemma in the latest instance of what some see as the bizarre bureaucracy of government assistance programs. "I told them I'm not sick enough to go into a nursing home," said Mrs. Rice, 67.

"I think it's a disgrace for me to have to go in the nursing home because he's $2 over the limit." Eugene Rice, who is blind and has emphysema, entered West Orange Manor in Winter Garden in March. At the time, he qualified OUR SUMMER SALES ARE GETTING HOTTER! rushed over when his son, Todd, yelled that someone needed help. Using his ever-present radio, sort of a family joke until Sunday, Watkins called for assistance from the fire station. By the time more help arrived, Shawn had begun crying, a sign that breathing had resumed. "That's the sweetest sound you'll ever hear," Watkins said.

More whales come ashore SUGARLOAF SHORES (AP) Seventeen pilot whales died Friday after they beached on a tiny spit of land off this resort community, officials said. It was the fourth mass beaching of whales in two months. Three whales in the pod were pushed back into the Gulf of Mexico and six remained alive on Snipe Point, said state Marine Patrol Duty Officer Bill Thomas. The beaching was reported about 10 a.m. CDT.

"They are going to try to stabilize them, remove them from the water and transport them," Thomas said. The mammals will be taken to Sea World of Florida in Orlando, said Edward Asper, vice president and general curator of the facility. Sugarloaf Shores is about 15 miles from Key West. About 40 pilot whales beached off Marco Island late last month, but rescue workers were able to herd most of the pod back to sea. It is possible the whales from Friday's beaching were from the same pod, said Michele Desanctis of the Florida Marine Patrol.

Observers at the scene said that natural markings identified the animals as the same, Thomas said. SLEEP STATION PLUS Student warnings issued TALLAHASSEE (AP) Flori-da's nine public universities issued health warnings to their students Friday, advising them to say no to drugs and to obey state laws on drugs and alcohol. "The national problem with drug abuse, especially crack cocaine, must be confronted head-on," said Charlie Reed, chancellor of the state university system. "For the sake of your health, your mind and your future, say no to drugs." Reed's warning noted that medical evidence shows drugs hinder academic performance, that drugs can kill, that students can be thrown out of school for using or selling drugs and that universities cooperate with local police in drug investigations. Bill Shade, vice chancellor for public affairs, said each of the universities will issue the warnings to students.

About 145,000 students are enrolled in the nine schools. Destin boy saves playmate DESTIN (AP) A 5-year-old boy has been credited with saving a younger child from drowning by yanking him from muck that had entrapped the victim after he had jumped, feet first, off a dock. After Michael Odom, son of Robert and Linda Odom of Destin, pulled 4-year-old Shawn Alexander from Joe's Bayou, the rescue was completed by Terry Watkins, Des-tin's fire chief and part-time emergency medical technician. Watkins revived the drowning child. After a night at Humana Hospital in nearby Fort Walton Beach, Shawn was sent home Monday to his mother, Jennifer Alexander.

"I jumped in deep water and my feet got stuck," Shawn recalled in an interview Thursday. "Michael pulled me out." Watkins, who was nearby, 8121 N. PENSACOLA BLVD. 474-0941 EXTRA FIRM INNERSPRING BEDDING CHILDRENS, MENS, LADIESWEAR SCO SI TWIN WU FULL EA. PC.
