Community leaders of the entire east San Gabriel from El Monte to Pomona and from the San Gabriel Mountains to the Whittier Highlands were invited to attend to discuss a proposed campaign to raise approximately (800,000. According to Citrus Court Judge Albert H. Miller, general chairman, the hospital will be constructed under the Hill Burton Act, which provides for equal contribution of Federal, State and community funds. Hospital facilities in the area have not been keeping abreast of population growth, it was pointed out.

A recent community study disclosed that the population today is in excess of 250,000, with a shortage of approximately 575 hospital beds. lem, a group of San Gabriel Valley business and professional men began a movement nearly two years ago to build the additional hospital in the area. Long range plans call for a 250-bed facility offering full emergency care, centrally located to service all communities with easy access from the San Bernardino Freeway. Total cost would be approximately $5,000,000. To alleviate the present the 125-bed unit would be started as soon as funds are available. This can be accomplished only through the support of all communities of the east San Gabriel Valley.

The initiative has been taken by a group of 25 business and professional men who have organized the East San Gabriel Valley Hospital Association, with F. M. McCown as president. They were responsible for inviting community leaders from Azusa, Baldwin Park, Bassett, Charter 1 Oaks, Covina, El Monte, Glendora, the Highlands, Industry City, Irwindale, the knolls. La Puente, San Dimas, West Covina and other communities.
