ijjlfiiHyi'liiirnir'i D4 Tuesday, April 27, 1903 The Honolulu Advertiser i MONEY Valentine Kepilino, 67, musician Annual meeting no love-in for IBM chief lDGOs. He was a member of Genoa Keawe's group from the late 1960s through the 1980s. And as a member of the Hawaiian Airlines promotions team in the 1970s, Kepilino traveled to the Mainland, Europe, and Alaska. Kepilino composed the lyrics and music to such works as "Mele 'O Lana'i" and "Ku'u Aloha Nui." He also composed the music for numerous songs written by Ma-lia Craver, including "Pu'u-honua Nani," "Aloha Kalanianaole," and "Ku'u up here and have my name on a list to be elected," said Dr. Gilbert Jannelli of Clearwater.

"How can you work with that group of people when their attitudes, their trusted decisions caused this company's demise?" About 2,300 shareholders, many of them Florida retirees and longtime company employees, attended an unusually contentious meeting that reflected just how far International Business Machines Corp. has fallen. The meeting capped a remarkable four months at 79-year-old IBM. In addition to hiring Gerstner as its first outsider chairman, IBM laid off workers for the first time and Associated Press TAMPA, Fla. Angry IBM shareholders yesterday unleashed a torrent of pent-up frustration at new Chairman Louis Gerstner, who promised to revive the computer maker but asked for patience.

In just his 18th workday at IBM, Gerstner tried to use the annual meeting to focus on a broad outline of goals. Instead, he heard impassioned calls by dozen stockholders for the ouster of the board of directors that were greeted with loud applause. "If I were a director I would be embarrassed to even show Business: Insurance crisis FROM PAGE D1 at new ways to buy insurance," she said. Takayama also said that her office's recommendation to the Legislature for a state hurricane insurance pool would cover homes and small businesses up to $1 million. But that's not sufficient, the Chamber of Commerce of Ha-' waii said.

"This would probably leave the majority of businesses either uninsured or subject to prohibitively expensive property insurance coverage. When combined with the escalating costs of other lines of commercial insurance, this situation could translate into higher costs and unemployment rates for all the people of Hawaii," the Chamber said in testimony before the Legislature pp the hurricane insurance pool proposal. One of the problems with creating a state insurance pool is that the State of Hawaii is too small a market to properly cover its insureds in the case of a major hurricane-like disas- ter, McGuire said. "We do not have the capaci-: ty to absorb the loss," he said. The Chamber's position is that a state fund should be es-; tablished in such a way that it can receive and distribute fed-! eral funds in case of a disaster.

In the meantime, many busi-; nesses are struggling to find coverage. DIAL DIRECT 521-9111 Haoxiii "They canceled all my fire, liability and workmen's compensation insurance, and at the end of this month, they're going to cancel my auto," said Sab Yoshioka, owner of Kauai Mercantile Agency, a wholesale sales and distribution firm. Yoshioka had been insured by one of the companies in the Hawaiian Insurance Group, which was taken over by the state last December.

The agency is now operating at a much reduced level and concentrating on personal lines of insurance, such as homeowners policies. "The governor tells us things will be better in time. We don't have time. We're in a bind," Yoshioka said. He said his insurance agent is working to try to find alternative insurance for him.

But business people across the state say that can be tough to find. Many Kauai businesses have had problems since immediately after the Sept. 11 hurricane. Many have still not settled with their insurance companies. Some have taken out small-business loans to get back into operation, in the hope that insurance settlements eventually will enable them to pay off the loans.

Getting new insurance is another problem. One Kauai insurance agent said some insurance companies are telling even long-time customers that they'll cover liability and other insurance needs, but will not cover property traders better s. lost $285 million from January through March. IBM has lost more than $7 billion in the past two years, cut a quarter of its work force or more than 100,000 jobs -since 1987, and lost significant market share amid growing competition. The company recently restructured to give IBM business units more freedom.

Gerstner listed four priorities for 1993: completing major staff reductions, defining what businesses IBM will pursue, improving customer relations and decentralizing. He said he hadn't been working long enough to be more specific. spreading "We've had to turn to other companies for the property side," the agent said. Typically, the customers are paying as much or more for less insurance, or for insurance with extremely high deductibles. Some policies specifically deny coverage for wind damage.

There are, however, some firms that have not had difficulty obtaining insurance. A statewide moving and storage firm reported its policies were recently renewed at only slightly more than last year's rates and without changes in the deductible. "I was surprised," said a company manager. Kauai Mercantile's Yoshioka said he is frustrated by the state's slowness to act to help small business at the same time it goes to great lengths to help failing big businesses. "Everybody's paying attention to Hamakua and Hawaiian Airlines, but those are dead horses.

Here, I have a viable business. I employ nine people, some of them part-timers. It's the small businesses that need the help," Yoshioka said. MONEY RATES Mon. April 28, 1993.
